Will Gojo spring a surprise in Newport?

The time after the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon is always a bit of a grey area. The preparation for the US Open does not start immediately and therefore it is almost the only phase during which matches are played on different surfaces. In Europe, the tennis cracks are currently playing clay court tournaments, but in Newport, USA, they are still serving on grass this week.

On Wednesday, German Peter Gojowczyk will face US veteran John Isner in the second round. At first glance, this seems to be a clear-cut affair. The bookmakers tested indicate with their quotes that Gojo has almost no chance in this match. But we think a surprise is quite possible.

The German has not really been in good form in the last few weeks, but in the first round in Newport in the US state of Rhode Island he already showed that he is now in good form again. Therefore, it won’t be a foregone conclusion for the local hero. In this second-round match between Peter Gojowczyk and John Isner, we think it’s a bit reckless to predict an outright win for the American.

At 37 years of age, John Isner has lost none of his strength in the service game, but he does have his problems in the rally and that is where the advantage of the German challenger could lie and that is why we can imagine placing a bet on a victory for the German in the duel between Peter Gojowczyk and John Isner.

Peter Gojowczyk – Statistics & current form

Current world ranking: 91
Seeded List Position: unseeded

Peter Gojowczyk’s career has been like that of many second-tier German players. He made it into the Top 50, but was not able to stay there for long. At the age of 32, he will probably not return to this area of the rankings, but if he has a good day or even a good week, he can be competitive, especially on fast courts.

First main field win since February

The Dachau native, however, has proved that far too seldom in recent matches. At the French Open, the German, who plays in the Austrian Bundesliga, already failed in the first round. Afterwards, he did not make it through the qualifying rounds at the home tournaments in Stuttgart and Halle. These were not the best prerequisites for success at Wimbledon.

He lost to Oscar Otte at Church Road in three crystal-clear sets. Maybe it was the right way to go to the USA now, to find his form in Newport, somewhat unnoticed by the media interest. He succeeded very well, at least in the first round. Against the Frenchman Ugo Humbert, who eliminated Casper Ruud in Wimbledon, Gojo showed his best side and won his first match in the main draw since February.

Especially in the first set the German had problems with his service, but gradually he found his game better and better and finally won after 1:45 hours 7:5 and 6:4. Especially in the longer rallies the player from Dachau excelled. If he can stabilise his serve, we predict at least one tiebreak in the match before the match between Peter Gojowczyk and John Isner.

John Isner – Statistics & current form

Current world ranking: 22
Position in the seedings: 2

There are many players on the ATP Tour who have a terrific serve. John Isner, however, towers above them all. At Wimbledon he managed his 13,729 ace, breaking Ivo Karlovic’s world record. A player who serves so well rarely allows his serve to be taken away. This means that John Isner’s matches very often go to a tiebreak.

Successful in the United States

Meanwhile, John Isner is 37 years old, but he is not yet old iron. What is striking in his career, however, is that he is clearly stronger and more successful in tournaments in the United States than outside the country’s borders. To date, he has reached the final of 30 ATP Tour tournaments. 26 of these tournaments were held in the USA. Now it’s back home again, so he’s certainly one to keep an eye on.

Although the US American is still ranked 22nd in the world rankings, he can no longer keep up with the really big players of the guild. He lost in the second round of the two Masters tournaments in Madrid and Rome and did not make it past the third round at the French Open. But the 37-year-old was never the strongest on clay anyway.

In Wimbledon, it could have been a good match, but after a win over Andy Murray, Jannik Sinner from Italy once again pulled the plug on him in the third round. This means that the old master is obviously vulnerable and that’s why we also see the chance for a win on Wednesday and between Peter Gojowczyk and John Isner we can imagine a prediction for a successful match from Gojo.

Peter Gojowczyk – John Isner Direct comparison / H2H record

To date, Peter Gojowczyk and John Isner have only crossed paths once. In February 2018, it came to a direct duel in the round of 16 at Delray Beach. True, Delray Beach is in the USA, but the German still retained the upper hand in three long sets. Basically, it was a typical result for a match involving John Isner.

Two tiebreaks had to be played and so Gojo won in the end 7:6, 6:7 and 7:5. That should be the next hint for at least one tiebreak on Wednesday and maybe it is worth to place bets on many matches. By the way, Peter Gojowczyk even reached the final at the time, but failed there against Francis Tiafoe.

Peter Gojowczyk – John Isner Tip

For sure John Isner is a thick one and when he brings his service he is extremely hard to break. Peter Gojowczyk will either have to convince in the rallies or prevail in the possible tiebreaks. He already proved how that works against the giant of serve in 2018 in Delray Beach.

Gojo hasn’t really performed well since February and has had a very mediocre six months in the meantime, but his first round win in Newport against the powerful Frenchman Ugo Humbert suggests he might be a force to be reckoned with this week.

We expect there to be plenty of games in this clash and it may not be decided in two rounds, but the longer this clash goes on, the more we see the advantage going to the German and that’s also why in the end we decided to play the betting odds between Peter Gojowczyk and John Isner on the Dachau man to win.
