Tragedy in the world of soccer. Yesterday evening, around 12:40 a.m., Liverpool striker Diogo Jota died. He was 28 years old. The Portuguese player was the victim of a car accident in Spain, near the region of Sanabria, in the province of Zamora. According to Spanish police sources, the accident was caused by a tire explosion on the Lamborghini he was traveling in while overtaking another vehicle. The Portuguese player was traveling with his brother André, a 26-year-old professional footballer for Penafiel, who also died. The vehicle left the road, causing a fire. According to witnesses who called 112, the car was engulfed in flames that spread to the surrounding vegetation. Jota had married on June 22 and had three children, the youngest of whom was born recently. He was due to return to Merseyside in a week to start training with the team.

Who he was – A striker for the Reds and the Portuguese national team, Jota grew up playing soccer in his native country before moving to Atlético Madrid at a very young age in 2016. He then went on loan to Porto, returned to Atlético, and was sold to Wolverhampton in the Premier League. It was here that Diogo Jota grew and scored consistently, earning the attention of Liverpool, who decided to sign him for around €44 million in the summer of 2020. He played his last game less than a month ago, on June 8, in the Nations League final won by his native Portugal against Spain. In total, Jota scored 63 goals in 190 games in the English league. He scored six goals in 38 Champions League games and nine in 13 Europa League games. His trophy cabinet was also full: the Premier League title won this season with Liverpool, two Nations League titles with Portugal, two English League Cups, and one FA Cup.
