Will Niemeier keep the German flag flying?

It was indeed to be expected. The draw at the US Open 2022 ended really tough for the German players. Of eight German starters, Jule Niemeier is the only one who made it to the second round. That’s a historically weak performance and now it’s time to keep our fingers crossed for the young Dortmund player in the second round against Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva.

Putintseva knows how to succeed at the US Open. In 2020, she was a quarter-finalist at Flushing Meadows. Overall, the Kazakh has a record of 8-7 wins in New York. Ranked 38th in the current WTA rankings, Putintseva is certainly favoured for the time being on Thursday, especially as she has considerably more experience in Grand Slam tournaments than her German opponent.

Jule Niemeier, on the other hand, is in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for only the third time. In Flushing Meadows last year, she only made it to the second round of qualifying. This year, she was spared the same fate at the last second.

But the 23-year-old Niemeier is not afraid of big names or much more experienced players. She wants to build on her success at the US Open when she made it to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. However, all the pressure of the German tennis nation is now on her shoulders. We also tend to bet on a Kazakh win in the second-round match between Yulia Putintseva and Jule Niemeier.

Yulia Putintseva – Statistics & current form

Current world ranking: 38
Position in the seedings: unseeded

Yulia Putintseva is certainly not a player to be afraid of, but the Russian-born 27-year-old, who competes for Kazakhstan, is always good for making it far at major tournaments. Twice she made it to the quarter-finals at the French Open and once she reached the last eight at Flushing Meadows.

Easily through to round two

The Kazakh certainly hasn’t had an outstanding year. For the world number 38, her record of 24-17 wins is likely to be up for improvement. She has not been able to add another title to her previous two on the WTA Tour this season. In general, you rarely know what to expect from Yulia Putintseva. Sometimes she plays great tennis and then it slackens off again.

Recently, for example, the Kazakh reached the quarter-finals of the Masters in Toronto after defeating Paula Badosa and Alison Riske, among others. After that, however, Putintseva was eliminated in the first round in Cincinnati and Cleveland. Against this background, the odds of a victory for the German in the match between Yulia Putintseva and Jule Niemeier are certainly worth looking at.

In the first round on Tuesday, the Kazakh faced local hero Amanda Anisimova, who was seeded 24th. A good service and better nerves tipped the match in Putintseva’s favour. Overall, the match was surprisingly clear and she won 6-3, 6-3 after just 1:19 hours.

Jule Niemeier – Statistics & current form

Current world ranking: 108
Position in the seedings: unseeded

An entire generation in German women’s tennis is gradually ending their careers. To be honest, it has to be said that the prospects are rather bleak at the moment. Jule Niemeier could at least be the only ray of hope on the horizon. But for that to happen, the 23-year-old must now get consistency into her game and see to it that she climbs a few places in the world rankings.

First win in the main draw of the US Open

Place 108 in the ranking was only enough for the main draw of the US Open due to some cancellations. However, the player from Dortmund also had the misfortune that no points were awarded for her good performance in Wimbledon. After that, things didn’t really go well and Jule Niemeier fell into a small hole. In Hamburg on clay and most recently at the ITF tournament in the Bronx, she was eliminated in the first round.

The German must not let the media pressure get to her too much. She should have the necessary potential to at least make it into the world’s top 50. It is possibly an advantage that Niemeier has been in New York for a while because she had to assume that she would take part in the qualification.

This way, the woman from Dortmund has already been able to acclimatise without having to use up any energy in the qualification. This was evident in the first round – her first victory in the main draw of the US Open. Jule Niemeier won against Sofia Kenin after 2:05 hours with 7:6 and 6:4. Overall, she served well, but sometimes took too much risk and made nine double faults. The German should be more confident on her own serve against Putintseva.

Yulia Putintseva – Jule Niemeier Direct comparison / H2H record

The age difference between Yulia Putintseva and Jule Niemeier is actually not that big. Therefore, the two ladies could have met on the Tour, although the German is only just establishing herself. In any case, the two tennis players will face each other for the first time ever on Thursday in Flushing Meadows.

Yulia Putintseva – Jule Niemeier Tip

Is Jule Niemeier mature enough to handle the pressure that now rests solely on her shoulders? The last few matches have shown the opposite. However, she has already proven in Wimbledon that she can rise above herself in big tournaments. Nevertheless, we see the Dortmund player as an outsider in this second round.

Putintseva has already experienced more in her career and has a much richer wealth of experience. We will see whether that will also be noticeable in her game.

But we can also imagine that the German will fight back for a long time and that the match will go over three sets. We also think bets on more than 20.5 games are quite promising. But we also think that after this match there will be no German player in the US Open field. We have decided to play the betting odds on a Kazakh victory between Yulia Putintseva and Jule Niemeier
