Nothing to get for the player from Karlsruhe?
For the third time in his career Yannick Hanfmann is in the men’s singles of the US Open. In his previous two participations, the Karlsruhe native has always been eliminated in the first round and now, in view of the downright hammer lottery, it should hardly be possible to break with this trend. In the run-up to the opening match between Yannick Hanfmann and Jannik Sinner, there is practically no alternative to betting on the South Tyrolean advancing.
The betting providers give the player from Sesto a probability of 95% of advancing to the next round, which is also due to the fact that Jannik Sinner has just won a major title for the first time in his career at Roger’s Cup and is starting the US Open in very good form. Accordingly, the forecast for Yannick Hanfmann against Jannik Sinner is that the world number six will advance to the second round without losing a set.
While Yannick Hanfmann doesn’t exactly have a reputation as a giant-killer. But if you look at his career record on the ATP Tour, you’ll notice that the fan-favorite has already won four of his twelve singles matches against current top-10 players. That is a thoroughly respectable win rate of 33%. Against a Jannik Sinner in impressive form, we still do not expect the German to have any chance of staying in the tournament, especially since Yannick Hanfmann has lost his last four singles matches on the ATP Tour in a row and is considered a clay court player who does not particularly like hard courts.
A lot of value is therefore provided by betting that the South Tyrolean will win this opening match with a commanding 3:0.
Yannick Hanfmann – statistics & current form
Current position in the world ranking: 54
Position in the seedings: unseeded
The 31-year-old German Yannick Hanfmann can definitely be called a late starter. Until well into his career, the Karlsruhe native played virtually exclusively on the ATP Challenger Tour as well as in ITF tournaments.
The 2023 season will now be the second season ever in the fan’s career in which he has made it into the main draw of the men’s singles at all four Grand Slam tournaments. However, Hanfmann has not been really successful so far. He has won only two of his twelve singles matches at Grand Slam level so far.
Won three of seven duels with top-10 players in 2023
The year 2023 nevertheless marks one of the most successful years in the career of the German, who has climbed steadily in the rankings and recorded several small milestones. For example, the Karlsruhe native reached the second round of the French Open for the first time and even reached the quarterfinals of a major tournament for the first time at the Masters Tournament in Rome (Italian Open).
In the current year, Yannick Hanfmann has met reigning top-10 players seven times and has increasingly been able to keep up with this level. After the 31-year-old won only one singles match against a top-10 player before 2023, he has won three matches this year compared to four defeats.
Won first three matches on hard court overall
Lately, however, the momentum has been a bit lost for the Karlsruhe native. The German has lost all of his last four singles matches, which means his record currently stands at 19 wins compared to 16 losses in 2023.
Yannick Hanfmann’s betting on the 31-year-old’s progress against Jannik Sinner is correspondingly ill-starred, as he has played virtually all of his major matches this year on clay court and has only ever celebrated three victories on hard court in his entire career on the ATP Tour (compared to twelve defeats).
Jannik Sinner – statistics & current form
Current position in the world ranking: 6
Position in the seedings: 6
The 22-year-old South Tyrolean Jannik Sinner already ventured onto the ATP Tour in 2019, making his Grand Slam-level debut here at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at the 2019 US Open.
In Flushing Meadows, the Sesto native was eliminated in the first round in each of his first two years. In 2021, however, Sinner made it to the round of 16 for the first time before even making the top eight a year ago.
The first major title at Roger’s Cup
In the new year, the South Tyrolean, who has firmly established himself in the top 10 of the ATP world rankings, has once again been able to improve. At Wimbledon, the 22-year-old reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time before securing his first major title at the US Open Series.
At the Roger’s Cup in Canada, Jannik Sinner beat Matteo Berrettini, Gael Monfils, Tommy Paul and Alex de Minaur in succession. In the end, the player from Sesto lost only one set during this strong run and won a tournament from the Masters 1000 category for the first time.
Won 41 of the 53 singles matches in 2023
Overall, it was the eighth singles title of the shooting star on the ATP Tour and the second tournament victory in 2023. Accordingly, the odds are clearly in favor of Yannick Hanfmann against Jannik Sinner, who most recently, however, had to accept a first-round exit against Dusan Lajovic (ATP 66) at the Western & Southern Open immediately after his tournament victory in Toronto.
In any case, this did not do too much damage to the 22-year-old’s strong annual record. In total, Jannik Sinner has already won 41 singles matches this year, with only twelve defeats to his name.

Yannick Hanfmann – Jannik Sinner tip
In the run-up to the first round match between Yannick Hanfmann and Jannik Sinner, the betting odds are swinging very clearly in the direction of the man from Sesto, who was already able to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time a year ago and won one of the two major tournaments in preparation as part of this year’s US Open Series. At Roger’s Cup, the South Tyrolean dropped just a single set on his way to winning the tournament.
Our prediction for Yannick Hanfmann against Jannik Sinner is accordingly clear, especially since the German has never made it past the first round of the US Open in two attempts so far, has only won four of twelve duels with top 10 players in his career (all on clay) and has only three victories on hard court in total on the ATP Tour.
Therefore, we recommend betting on Jannik Sinner to win 3:0 in three sets, for which the betting provider Bet365 offers quotes of 1.53.
