Of course, the German superstar Alexander Zverev will once again be the driving force for the DTB in the men’s singles at the French Open. However, Peter Gojowczyk has also been good for many a strong run in the past. Just last autumn, the Munich native reached the last 16 of the US Open 2021. The 32-year-old is only winless at Roland Garros so far.

However, his opening opponent Lorenzo Sonego has not been really successful either. The Italian won just two singles in four preparatory tournaments in the 2022 clay court season. Consequently, we assess the situation much more evenly than the betting companies, where the odds in the run-up to the duel between Peter Gojowczyk and Lorenzo Sonego are clearly in favour of the Italian.

The direct comparison also suggests that the German, who has been repeatedly set back by injuries in a complicated year, definitely has chances of advancing to the second round. Moreover, the only duel that took place on clay court went clearly to Gojo with 2:0. Consequently, we consider the underdog bet to be a good play, even in view of the high prices.

Peter Gojowczyk – Statistics & current form

Current world ranking: 94
Position in the seedings: unseeded

The 32-year-old German Peter Gojowczyk is playing a very poor 2022 so far, overshadowed by injuries, in which he initially lost the first five singles of the season all together.

The Munich-born Gojowczyk was thus unable to build on his strong autumn, in which he reached the last 16 of the US Open 2021 and put in his strongest ever performance in a men’s singles match at a Grand Slam tournament.

Desolate annual record of a 1:7

Also because the German has plummeted massively in the world rankings and is a long way from his career high (ATP 39), he has had to come through the qualifying rounds again and again recently. There he recorded several victories. In the main draw at the latest, however, his puff was rarely enough for more than one match.

On the one hand, this resulted in several abandoned matches and, on the other hand, in a desolate annual balance of only one victory compared to seven defeats, since the qualifying matches do not count in the official singles ranking of the ATP Tour and are therefore not taken into account in the annual balance.

Never won a men’s singles match at the French Open before

Last time Gojo was defeated 0:2 by the Swiss Johan Nikles (ATP 317) in the final test in Geneva. Consequently, no one really expects the player from Munich, who has never won a match in his three appearances in the main draw of the French Open so far.

Nevertheless, the betting on Peter Gojowczyk’s first win at Roland Garros against Lorenzo Sonego could well be under worse omens. On the one hand, his Italian opponent is not exactly in good form, while on the other hand, the only meeting between the two athletes so far went to the Munich player.

Lorenzo Sonego – Statistics & current form

Current position in the world ranking: 35
Position in the seedings: 32

Due to three withdrawals, 27-year-old Italian Lorenzo Sonego has just managed to secure the last free spot on the French Open seedings list as the 32nd player.

The Turin native also has the potential to start a good run at the only Grand Slam tournament that takes place on clay. After all, he played his two best major tournaments to date on that surface when he reached the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo in 2019 and the semi-finals at the Rome Masters in 2021.

Having finished in round one in two of his three appearances at the French Open

Lorenzo Sonego, however, has not yet been able to record any really resounding successes. On the ATP Tour, the 27-year-old has now won only two singles titles in minor tournaments in his eight years as a professional. He has also rarely made a noticeable appearance at the Grand Slams.

At the French Open, the world number 35 only made it to the main draw three times. Once he reached the round of 16 (2020). In his other two appearances, the Italian was also knocked out in his opening match.

Won only ten of 23 individual matches in 2022

Lately, the 27-year-old has not been convincing in the 2022 clay court season either. Sonego won only two singles in four preparatory tournaments and also has a negative record for the year with only ten wins from 23 singles. Among others, he lost 0:2 to the underdog Jack Draper (ATP 121) in Madrid.

It is therefore surprising that the man from Turin is seen as such a clear favourite at Roland Garros.

Peter Gojowczyk – Lorenzo Sonego Direct comparison / H2H record

Head to head: 1:0

The two athletes have faced each other once before on clay courts as part of the 2018 Rome Masters. On that occasion, the German left no stone unturned and won outright 2:0 (6:3 and 6:4)

Peter Gojowczyk – Lorenzo Sonego Tip

In the case of Peter Gojowczyk against Lorenzo Sonego, the prediction basically goes in the direction of the Italian, who did not exactly shine in 2022 either, but celebrated significantly more victories overall and above all had no injury problems. Nevertheless, at least the direct comparison speaks in favour of the German, who can play in Roland Garros as an outsider, free and without pressure.

Although there is a risk that Gojo is not yet stable enough for a match over three winning sets and that the match will end with a retirement. Nevertheless, all the ingredients for a winning underdog bet are basically there.
