Will Otte surprise against the Spanish favourite?

A total of 13 German men and women were represented in the singles competition at Wimbledon. Although tennis star Alexander Zverev will be out for a long time after his ligament injury, the DTB can draw a positive conclusion. After all, four players made it to the third round. The only remaining male participant Oscar Otte has a real highlight ahead of him in his third round match on Friday. On one of the big courts, Oscar Otte and Carlos Alcaraz will face each other

The 28-year-old from Cologne is definitely a late starter on the ATP Tour, but has been in impressive form in recent months. His Spanish competitor should be a familiar name to every tennis fan by now, after all, a real hype has developed around the man from Spain in recent weeks. However, grass is certainly his weakest surface and it is therefore a little surprising that the bookmakers are offering such high odds on the German between Otte and Alcaraz.

Turf tennis in 2022 is certainly much slower than it was ten years ago. This definitely plays into the hands of a clay court expert like Carlos Alcaraz; nevertheless, he lacks a bit of experience on the unfamiliar surface. There should be opportunities for Otte.

Oscar Otte – Statistics & current form

Twelve months ago, in July 2021, Oscar Otte was only number 151 in the ATP world rankings. This meant he was ranked in a range that was by no means lucrative financially. At the age of 27, he was also no longer a youngster whose breakthrough could be expected in the near future. But the current times show all the more that life cannot always be planned. From a purely sporting point of view, Oscar Otte can certainly call the last twelve months the most successful period in his career.

At the beginning of the year, he broke through the sound barrier for the first time and was able to enjoy a double-digit ranking. The high-flying continued bit by bit and Oscar Otte is currently ranked 36th in the world. In the meantime, the five-time Challenger title holder is in a range where the sport is also absolutely profitable financially. Where the journey in the ranking will lead is difficult to estimate, but the end is not (yet) in sight.

Quickies at Church Road

In preparation for Wimbledon, Otte has already been convincing all along the line, reaching the semi-finals in both Stuttgart and Halle. Defeats against Matteo Berrettini (last year’s finalist) and Daniil Medvedev (world number one) can definitely be absorbed.

On the hallowed turf of Wimbledon, Otte has so far only been able to convince his fans very briefly with his aggressive grass court game. In the all-German duel against Peter Gojowzcyk in the first round, the number 32 seed needed just 1:18 hours to fix the 6:1, 6:2 and 6:1 victory. His second round performance against qualifier Harrison was even shorter, as he had to retire after only 24 points played at 3:1 (from Otte’s point of view). In total, Otte was on the tennis court for only 93 minutes in the first two rounds.

Otte is aware of his strong form and was able to save an enormous amount of energy in the first two rounds. This is certainly no disadvantage for the duel against a top ten player. On grass, the Cologne player admits to having chances to defeat Alcaraz. And indeed, the prospects are much more promising than the odds suggest for Otte against Alcaraz.

Carlos Alcaraz – statistics & current form

The praise for Carlos Alcaraz has been almost omnipresent in recent weeks. The 19-year-old teenager certainly has all the makings of a post-Nadal-Federer-Djokovic era. Some experts even describe him as the perfect mixture of this trio. On clay and hard court, the Spaniard is certainly already one of the absolute top players.

Scarcely any grass court experience

Tennis on grass, however, is partly a different sport. It was mentioned at the beginning that the game on grass has become much slower in the meantime and that it is also possible to determine a match from the baseline at the back. A few years ago, it was absolutely necessary to go to the net. This development is certainly to the benefit of someone like Alcaraz, but the change from clay to grass is still not without its difficulties.

And this is precisely the point why betting on the Spaniard on Friday afternoon between Oscar Otte and Carlos Alcaraz is discouraged. The grass season is short-lived and young players in particular have hardly any experience on this surface. Footwork is even more important than on clay or hard court, and you also have to get a feel for the bouncing balls.

Before the first-round match at Wimbledon 2022, Alcaraz had only played four matches in 2019 in the junior competition at Wimbledon and two matches last year in the men’s competition. The number five seed struggled against “Struffi” and celebrated a fortunate victory in five sets after more than four hours of play. He then had no problems with Tallon Griekspoor in round two and celebrated a victory in three sets. But Otte will be very aggressive, just like “Struffi”, and will be able to put the Spaniard in a tight spot.

Head to Head: 0:0

In the third round of the Wimbledon grass court classic, 28-year-old Oscar Otte and 19-year-old teenager Carlos Alcaraz face each other for the first time

Oscar Otte – Carlos Alcaraz Tip

Oscar Otte would describe himself as much more grown up than he was a year ago. The development of the Cologne native in recent months is extremely impressive. His bold, cheeky style coupled with the attitude that he has nothing to lose is creating a lot of spectacle and, above all, good results in the meantime.

This offensive style of play comes into its own much more on grass. This is one of the main reasons why a tip in the direction of the German must be attempted in the third-round duel between Oscar Otte and Carlos Alcaraz.

In the last few months, Alcaraz has shown a clear development in his service, which earned him many free points, especially in the first round. Otherwise, he has consistently struggled with the conditions on the hallowed turf. Otte, on the other hand, is a player who loves the grass and can win over the fans with his style of play.

Between Otte and Alcaraz, the prediction on the German’s victory is risky, but definitely justifiable. A little less risk is given with Otte +1.5 sets – interesting betting odds are still offered here as well. A stake of six units is recommended for this tip.
