Does Jules dream continue?

There could well have been disaster for German tennis at Wimbledon 2022 after Alexander Zverev missed out through injury. But four out of 13 Germans reached the third round. All in all, that is a very respectable result. Surprisingly, Jule Niemeier from Dortmund is still in the tournament and will meet Lesia Tsurenko from Ukraine in the third round on Friday.

The chances for the two ladies to advance to the second week couldn’t be better. The draw in section eight of the women’s competition is open. The seeded Belinda Bencic, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Anhelina Kalinina and Anett Kontaveit have all been eliminated. So in this sector, an unseeded player will certainly make it to the quarter-finals, why not Jule Niemeier?

It is not advisable to look too far ahead, but the chance could inspire the 22-year-old German. Of course, this also applies to her experienced opponent. The Ukrainian is now 33 years old and has experienced a lot in her career. From a purely experience point of view, the prediction in the duel between Lesia Tsurenko and Jule Niemeier has to go more towards a victory for the Ukrainian

However, the young German has been completely convincing in her two matches at Church Road and has delivered some outstanding tennis.

Lesia Tsurenko – Statistics & current form

Current world ranking: 101
Position in the seedings: unseeded

Lesia Tsurenko is now competing at Wimbledon for the tenth time. The Ukrainian could even her record at Church Road on Friday. After her two wins this week, her record on the hallowed turf now stands at 8-9. That means there is no need to fear the 33-year-old’s qualities on grass.

Strong performances on grass

As of February 2019, the Ukrainian was once ranked number 23 in the world. In the meantime, however, her career seems to be coming to an end. In Melbourne and in Paris, she already failed in the first round, but had two fierce opening draws with Ashleigh Barty and Iga Swiatek. At Wimbledon, she was much luckier with the draw and could perhaps still go far.

She got her competitive toughness on grass mainly in Eastbourne, when she won five in a row, including the qualifiers, but then crashed out in the last 16. With the two victories at Church Road, the 33-year-old has now won seven of her last eight matches. It sounds as if the odds on a win for the more experienced player in the duel between Lesia Tsurenko and Jule Niemeier should be kept in mind.

In the first round she had to deal with Jodie Burrage from Great Britain, who entered the main draw by wild card. Lesia Tsurenko had no trouble at all, winning 6:2 and 6:3. It was a close match in the second round against her team mate Anhelina Kalinina, when she lost the first set quickly, but then won the match 3-6, 6-4 and 6-3.

Jule Niemeier – Statistics & current form

Current world ranking: 97
Position in the seedings: unseeded

You always have to be careful with the expectations of young male and female athletes. It’s clear that German women’s tennis needs new faces, because Angelique Kerber or even Andrea Petkovic won’t keep playing forever. Jule Niemeier could be one who can fill this vacuum if she can also consistently call up her qualities.

Grand victory against top player

Wimbledon shows that she is rightly a hopeful. However, one should not put too much pressure on her shoulders now. The 22-year-old is playing in a Grand Slam tournament for only the second time, so it’s great that she’s already in the third round. A lot of opportunities have opened up, but it wouldn’t be a disaster if she didn’t make it any further.

In the first round she played a great match against the Chinese Wang Xiyu and won confidently with 6:1 and 6:4. Everyone then expected a defeat in the second round against the world number three. However, Jule Niemeier also showed her best side against Estonian Anett Kontaveit. The young German dominated the match against one of the tournament favourites at will.

After just 59 minutes, the scoreboard showed 6:4 and 6:0. Now the German from Dortmund has to be careful that her emotions don’t take her on a rollercoaster ride. After such a victory, it is quite possible that she will have problems in the following match. But if she succeeds in presenting herself strong and down-to-earth once again, then one can definitely make a prediction of a victory for the German between Lesia Tsurenko and Jule Niemeier.

Lesia Tsurenko – Jule Niemeier Direct comparison / H2H balance

Lesia Tsurenko has seen it all in her career and has scored some success on the WTA Tour. Jule Niemeier is still at the beginning of her career at the age of 22. The German has mainly served at lower-class tournaments. Now, in Wimbledon, she could make a permanent breakthrough into the top 100 of the rankings.

Therefore, the two ladies have played in two different tennis worlds so far. This is why they will be facing each other for the first time ever on Friday.

Lesia Tsurenko – Jule Niemeier Tip

We expect a very close match in this third round. On one side is the experienced Ukrainian who will bring her experience to the grass and has won a total of seven of her last eight matches. On the other side of the net is the young Jule Niemeier, who wants to win her third match at Wimbledon with her carefree attitude.

That the Dortmund player has the qualities to go far in her first appearance at Church Road became clear in the first two rounds. However, we now have to see whether she is also able to consistently play at this level.

Jule Niemeier is the slight favourite with the bookmakers, but we think that after her success against Anett Kontaveit, perhaps a little too much media attention has been poured on her. Therefore, we expect that it will be difficult for her to reach the fourth round because she will have to process the many impressions of the last few days. For this reason, we have decided to play the betting odds on a win for the Ukrainian in the duel Lesia Tsurenko vs Jule Niemeier
