Unthreatening opening win for the number one?
It sounds more boring than it has been for the last 20 years at Wimbledon. Since 2003, only four different players (Federer, Nadal, Murray, Djokovic) have won the men’s competition until Carlos Alcaraz broke through the magic phalanx last season and triumphed in London for the first time. This year, the top favorite at Wimbledon is someone else. In our Jannik Sinner vs Yannick Hanfmann betting tip, we check whether the Italian can live up to this role
Jannik Sinner is the number one in the ATP ranking, won the Australian Open this season and recently proved his ability on grass in Halle. Unlike usual, however, the Italian is not just fighting for himself at Wimbledon, but for the history of a tennis-mad nation. Never before has an Italian tennis player won the singles competition at this most prestigious of all tournaments.
Jannik Sinner could therefore make history at Church Road. The first hurdle is Yannick Hanfmann, an opponent from Germany who should not pose too many problems for the best tennis player in the world at the moment. The German is the big underdog in this match and will have to have a perfect day if he wants to have any chance at all
In general, however, the odds show that the Italian must win between Jannik Sinner and Yannick Hanfmann. Even with a Bet365 offer code and odds of just over 1.00, it hardly makes sense to bet on a simple victory for the top seed from South Tyrol. We will probably have to look in a different direction with our betting tip on this match:
Jannik Sinner – Statistics & current form
Current world ranking position: 1
Position in the seeding list: 1
Jannik Sinner’s career has been characterized by a steady development. It has long been foreseeable that he would be one of the contenders for the tennis throne as soon as the Big Four slowly but surely vacated their places. The South Tyrolean has now won two Masters tournaments, the Australian Open and, last year, the Davis Cup. At the age of 22, he is still at the beginning of his sporting career
Sinner with first title on grass
The Italians are actually known for the fact that clay is their favorite surface. Of his 14 titles on the ATP Tour, he only won a tournament on clay in Umag, Croatia, in 2022. All of his other triumphs have been on hardcourts, and most recently on grass for the first time in Halle. After reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon last year, Jannik Sinner should have a good chance of triumphing this time around.
Overall, the 22-year-old has an incredible record of 38-3 victories this season. With the Grand Slam in Melbourne and the tournaments in Rotterdam, Miami and Halle, there have already been four triumphs. The Italian has lost just one of his last eleven matches. We think that there is no alternative between Jannik Sinner and Yannick Hanfmann if the number one wins.
However, the South Tyrolean should not make the mistake of taking Yannick Hanfmann lightly and start thinking about the rest of the tournament. The Italian could face the 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in the second round. That would certainly be a match that would electrify the tennis scene, but first Sinner has to do his homework in the first round
Yannick Hanfmann – Statistics & current form
Current world ranking: 95
Position in the seeding list: unseeded
Almost exactly a year ago, Yannick Hanfmann found himself in the fall of his career with a ranking in the top 50 of the world rankings at his carrier high. Up until then, everything looked as if he would be taking part in the Olympic Games in Paris at the age of 32, but he missed out on the big goal. Just under 50 points were missing at the end of the French Open, fittingly also at the Stade Roland Garros.
Hanfmann still without a win at Wimbledon
Yannick Hanfmann first has to digest this setback, but in sporting terms there seems to be no turnaround for the better at the moment. The player from Karlsruhe has really played a lot of tournaments this season, but with 11:16 victories, his record shows that his career has taken a turn for the worse. We don’t expect him to make a turnaround at Wimbledon of all places.
After all, grass is not Yannick Hanfmann’s surface. This is only his third time in the main draw at Church Road. He failed in the first round in both 2021 and 2023. This means that at 32, the German is still waiting for his first match success at Wimbledon. This is another reason why we don’t dare to predict a close match in the duel between Jannik Sinner and Yannick Hanfmann.
After all, the Karlsruhe player has won at least two of his four matches on grass in recent weeks. The first victory, however, came in Stuttgart against his compatriot Henri Squire, who is well outside the top 100 in the rankings. Hanfmann’s second success came against Australian Adam Walton in the qualifier in Halle. Now he will take to the court against the best tennis player in the world at the moment. It’s hard to be optimistic about this match from a German perspective
Jannik Sinner – Yannick Hanfmann Direct comparison / H2H result
The direct comparison is not always particularly meaningful. This is not quite the case in the duel between Jannik Sinner and Yannick Hanfmann, although the two opponents have only played against each other once before, under similar conditions to those we are facing now. It was less than a year ago that this match was drawn in the first round of the US Open.
The Italian was seeded sixth and the German was even higher in the ATP rankings than he is today. In the end, the result was a clear 6:3, 6:1 and 6:1. In the meantime, the South Tyrolean has gone one better, so it could be another clear-cut affair. A straight sets win for the Karlsruher alone would be a great story
Jannik Sinner – Yannick Hanfmann tip
It should be a clear-cut affair. If Yannick Hanfmann can keep the game open, then perhaps at the beginning of the match, when they still have to get used to the surroundings at the start of the tournament. Bets on a clear 3:0 victory for the Italian offer no value. That’s why we took a look at what would be a better option in this match.
We think it is generally possible that Yannick Hanfmann could win a set. We therefore think that betting on a 3:1 or 3:2 win for the Italian is conceivable, even if we think that a 3:2 should perhaps be too close a result. In the Bwin app, we might therefore be tempted to place a bet between Jannik Sinner and Yannick Hanfmann on a 3:1 win for the South Tyrolean
If you’re not afraid to take a risk, then perhaps a bet on the world number one to win after falling behind would be interesting. But that means that the German would have to lead either 1:0 or 2:1 after sets. Personally, that’s a bit too windy for us. We have decided to play the odds on more than 3.5 sets in this match between Jannik Sinner and Yannick Hanfmann
