Will Hanfmann survive another round?
After being a lucky loser to book his ticket to the main draw of the French Open 2023, Yannick Hanfmann is the only one of three German players to make it into the second round with an opening win. Here, the Karlsruhe player will now clash with an opponent who has also won a singles match at Roland Garros for the first time in his career. In principle, Francisco Cerúndolo’s betting on the Argentinean advancing to the next round against Yannick Hanfmann is more favourable.
Not only did Francisco Cerúndolo win the only meeting with the German 2-1 so far, but he also starts as the seeded player after a strong year at Roland Garros so far. Accordingly, the bookmakers also see the Argentine in the role of favourite. For us, too, the forecast for Francisco Cerúndolo against Yannick Hanfmann tends towards the world No. 23
However, Yannick Hanfmann will certainly not surrender without a fight, especially as the German has already delivered several impressive matches in 2023. For example, he beat two reigning top 10 players at the Italian Open in Rome. In addition to Andrey Rublev (ATP 6), the Karlsruhe native also defeated Taylor Fritz (ATP 9), who could now theoretically be waiting in the upcoming third round at Roland Garros.
Considering that Francisco Cerúndolo and Yannick Hanfmann had to play 30 games in two sets to decide the winner in Buenos Aires in February, we now find the greatest value in betting on 36.5 games.
Francisco Cerúndolo – Statistics & current form
Current ranking in the world: 23
Position in the seedings: 23
The 24-year-old Argentine Francisco Cerúndolo has been on the ATP Tour since the 2021 season, where he first attracted attention last year at the Miami Open. In 2022, his journey in the Sunshine State went all the way to the semifinals.
Later in the year, he won his first ATP World Tour title at the Swedish Open in Bastad, defeating compatriot Sebastián Báez 2-0 in the final, after losing out to compatriot Diego Schwartzman in the final at the Argentina Open 2021 the year before.
41.7% of all singles wins against Top 10 players
In the new year, Cerúndolo then performed well again at several tournaments. At the Australian Open 2023, he celebrated two singles victories at Grand Slam level for the first time, before reaching the quarter-finals again in Miami and finally storming into the quarter-finals of a Masters tournament for the third time in his career at the Italian Open in Rome.
In the eternal city, however, he lost to Casper Ruud. On his way to the quarter-finals, the Argentinean beat Jannik Sinner, a current top-10 player. It was already the fifth win in the twelfth duel of his career with an opponent from the Top 10.
Won 21 of 35 singles matches in 2023
It was not enough for another title at the preparatory tournament in Lyon shortly before the French Open, when Francisco Cerúndolo surprisingly lost the final against Arthur Fils (ATP 112) 0:2. Nevertheless, the Argentinean’s annual record reads impressively with 21 wins from 35 singles matches.
Thus, the forecast for Francisco Cerúndolo against Yannick Hanfmann is now also leaning towards the advancement of the 24-year-old, who managed a 3:1 victory in the first round against the Spaniard Jaume Munar (ATP 81) also due to his strong returns. The Argentine scored 66% of the time when his opponent had to come over the second serve.
Yannick Hanfmann – Statistics & current form
Current world ranking: 65
Position in the seedings: Lucky Loser
The 31-year-old German Yannick Hanfmann is one of the rather late call-ups. In the run-up to the 2021 season, the Karlsruhe native only made it into the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament twice. The 2023 French Open will be only his ninth Grand Slam singles appearance.
The player from the city of fans would not have qualified at all. Hanfmann had already failed to qualify due to a loss to Elias Ymer, but was then drawn into the main draw as a lucky loser after Benjamin Bonzi withdrew.
He is the only player in the tournament to have qualified for the Grand Slam.
First two singles victories in the main draw of a Grand Slam
In any case, the German seized his chance in the best possible way. In the first round, the 31-year-old beat Thiago Monteiro 3:2 (6:3, 7:5, 6:7, 6:7 and 6:4) in a match worth watching, in which he threatened to squander a 2:0 lead after losing two sets in a tiebreak.
Yannick Hanfmann thus also won a singles match at the French Open for the first time in his career. Overall, it was only his second win in the main draw of a Grand Slam since a 3-0 over Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Australian Open in 2022.
Won 13 of 20 completed singles in 2023
The Karlsruhe native, who also stormed into the quarter-finals at the Italian Open most recently after a strong tournament run, eliminating two top-10 players along the way, now stands at a total of 13 wins from 20 completed singles matches in 2023.
Nevertheless, the odds on Francisco Cerúndolo against Yannick Hanfmann are swinging in the direction of his opponent, partly because the German was far less successful with his returns in the opening match at Roland Garros. The German only scored on his opponent’s serve in 63 out of 166 cases – a rate of only 38%.

The first and only meeting between the two athletes to date took place at the Argentina Open 2023 in Buenos Aires this February. Francisco Cerúndolo celebrated a narrow 2-1 victory (6:2, 4:6 and 7:5) over the German here in a contested three-setter after 30 games.
Francisco Cerúndolo – Yannick Hanfmann Tip
The betting odds on Francisco Cerúndolo against Yannick Hanfmann are very clearly in favour of the Argentine. Overall, the 24-year-old has played the more impressive year so far, started from the top of the seedings at Roland Garros and defeated the German 2-1 in his hometown Buenos Aires in February. However, Yannick Hanfmann was already able to hold his own in this match. We expect a match with the same intensity at the French Open 2023.
Although we fear that the chances of the Argentine to reach the third round are significantly higher. Nevertheless, we find the greatest value in Francisco Cerúndolo vs. Yannick Hanfmann in the tip that at least 37 games are needed to determine the winner.
