Last Fognini match at Wimbledon?
Note: Dominik Köpfer had to cancel his participation in Wimbledon 2024 due to an ankle injury on Sunday.
A total of twelve German tennis stars are competing at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon and, at first glance, many of them have been drawn to play solvable matches, at least at the start. Our Dominik Köpfer vs Fabio Fognini betting tip shows that the German is the favorite in this duel and that he has a good chance of reaching the second round after two dismal years
Dominik Köpfer is now 30 years old and still flies a little under the radar in Germany. Perhaps this is because he spends a lot of time in the United States and has not had any major successes on his CV to date. Furtwängler is still waiting for his first tournament success on the ATP Tour, but perhaps he can make a lasting impression with a few successful matches on Church Road.
Fabio Fognini doesn’t need to draw sustained attention to himself. The 37-year-old won’t be playing on the tour for much longer. The Italian served for the first time at Wimbledon in 2008. This year will be his 14th time at Church Road. His record of 16-13 victories is clearly expandable and shows that the veteran will not be tearing up any trees this year either
Dominik Köpfer – statistics & current form
Current world ranking position: 66
Position in the seeding list: unseeded
It was another disappointing year for Dominik Köpfer. The round of 16 at the Masters in Miami was the highlight of 2024. It’s no surprise that he achieved his best result of the season virtually on his own doorstep in Florida. Nevertheless, he has achieved the big goal of making it to the Olympic Games for the second time after 2021 in Tokyo and competing in Paris at the end of July
Köpfer with a negative Wimbledon record
Wimbledon is an event that you can’t even take out of focus for the Olympic Games. At Church Road, you have to be at your best and Dominik Köpfer has hardly managed to do that so far in his career. His record of 3:4 wins in four appearances definitely leaves a lot to be desired. It’s time not only to improve these statistics, but also to win a match at Wimbledon again after three years.
The preparation on grass has shown that there is still room for improvement. However, 2:2 victories on grass are not so bad for Dominik Köpfer either. In the first rounds of Stuttgart and Halle, he had the tougher tasks with Zhizhen Zhang and Felix Auger-Aliassime and then lost to Lorenzo Musetti and Arthur Fils in the second round.
In general, things have been anything but good for the 30-year-old at the Grand Slam tournaments in recent years. He last won a match at one of the four major tournaments at the start of 2022, a good two years ago. That would actually be an indication not to play the odds on a win for the German between Dominik Köpfer and Fabio Fognini, or at least to expect a close match that is unlikely to be decided in three sets
Fabio Fognini – Statistics & current form
Current world ranking: 97
Position in the seeding list: unseeded
Fabio Fognini has actually been expected to end his career for some time now. In 2023, he told the audience at the French Open in Paris that it was his last or penultimate appearance at Stade Roland Garros. Perhaps he really won’t be returning now, as there will be four Italians in action at the Olympic Games who are currently considered to be much stronger and the 37-year-old will also only be able to watch on in the doubles
Fognini still hasn’t had enough
Fabio Fognini is a true Italian when it comes to his preferences for tennis courts. The 37-year-old has won nine tournaments on the ATP Tour. Eight of these tournaments were on clay. The Italian celebrated his last major success in 2019, when he won the Masters in Monte Carlo, his biggest title ever in professional tennis. Incidentally, he is the Italian who has celebrated the most victories on the ATP Tour.
However, his record on grass remains modest in view of a very successful career. At Wimbledon, the former world number nine only just has positive statistics with 16-13 wins. However, you first have to manage to win 13 times at Church Road. However, we do not expect his record in London to improve this year.
We are still predicting a win for the German in the match between Dominik Köpfer and Fabio Fognini. This is also due to the fact that the Italian has reduced his preparation for Wimbledon to a minimum. The 37-year-old has only gained match practice on grass in Mallorca. After a victory over Gijs Brouwer, he lost to Jakub Mensik in the second round
Dominik Köpfer – Fabio Fognini Direct comparison / H2H result
Fabio Fognini has been on the ATP Tour for almost 20 years. So there have been many theoretical opportunities for Dominik Köpfer to compete with the Italian. To date, however, there has been no match between the two opponents. Perhaps one reason for this is that the 37-year-old Fognini prefers the European clay courts, while Köpfer prefers to compete on the hard courts in the USA
Dominik Köpfer – Fabio Fognini tip
Every match has to be played first, even in tennis, but we think that the draw at Wimbledon couldn’t have been better for Dominik Köpfer. Fabio Fognini’s career is in its final stages and the Italian will certainly enjoy serving at Church Road once again, but grass is anything but his favorite surface.
That’s why we would bet in the Bwin app that the German will progress to the next round, especially as he is more at home on faster surfaces. We can’t make a direct comparison in this match because the two have always avoided each other on the tour for many years. Nevertheless, between Dominik Köpfer and Fabio Fognini, our tip is for a German victory
However, Furtwängler is not playing an outstanding season either. That’s why we think he’ll have problems getting into the tournament. At least slight difficulties should be inevitable. We therefore think that the Italian will win at least one set and have decided to play the odds on a 3:1 or 3:2 win for the German between Dominik Köpfer and Fabio Fognini.
