Will the Albiceleste continue their winning streak?

Two-time world champions Argentina have not missed a single finals since the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, and the Albiceleste are once again on course for success. After eleven games in the CONMEBOL 2022 World Cup Qualifiers, they have not yet lost a single match. The nine-point lead over fifth place, which would still put them into the intercontinental playoffs, is correspondingly comfortable.

Uruguay are in fifth place. The Celeste have already played one game more, but have only won four of their twelve group games (four draws, four defeats). In the run-up to the match between Uruguay and Argentina, the odds are clearly in favour of the visitors.

The Uruguayan national football team has failed to win any of its last three international matches and suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat to the Albiceleste in the first leg in Buenos Aires a month ago. Accordingly, betting on a win for the Gauchos in Uruguay against Argentina in this second leg is a good bet.

Uruguay – Statistics & current form

The Uruguayan national football team has missed out on a World Cup final every now and then, but has most recently been a consistent contender three times in a row. In 2010 in South Africa, the Celeste even reached the semi-finals, but then only finished fourth after two defeats.

It was nevertheless their best performance in 40 years, which also provided a boost in the following period. Just one year later, Uruguay celebrated their 15th overall Copa América victory at the 2011 Copa América. Until a few months ago, the Uruguayan team was the sole record holder in South America.

First four wins among the first twelve group matches

But since today’s guests Argentina won the Copa America 2021 this summer – Uruguay lost on penalties to Colombia in the quarter-finals – the Gauchos also have 15 titles to their name.

Before another attempt is made at the Copa America 2024 in Ecuador to become the sole record champions in South America again, the Uruguayan national team first wants to be back in the game at the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. To achieve this, they still need to improve a little. After all, they have only won four of the twelve group matches in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers so far.

Only one point out of a possible nine from the last three games

The Celeste are currently in fifth place, level on points with current group fourth-placed Colombia. Most recently, however, the team of long-serving coach Óscar Tabárez has picked up just one point out of a possible nine from their last three competitive matches, leaving them just three points ahead of the equally ambitious Chileans.

Even a point against the Gauchos would be worth a lot before another win is needed three days later in the away game in Bolivia. However, just a month ago they lost the first leg in Buenos Aires 3-0.

Predicted Uruguay line-up:

Argentina – Statistics & current form

The Argentina national football team has increasingly been regarded as perennial runners-up over the past 30 years since last winning the World Cup in 1986 and last triumphing in the Copa América in 1993.

Not only did the Gauchos lose the World Cup final in 1990 and 2014, they were also defeated in the Copa America final four times in a row. The current year has brought all the more satisfaction to the golden generation around world star Messi.

The first major title for the unfinished

The Albiceleste won the Copa América for the 15th time in history this summer at the legendary Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, beating hosts Brazil 1-0 in the final of all places.

Lionel Scaloni’s men also climbed to sixth place in the FIFA world rankings and would certainly be serious contenders for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. With a look at the current CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying table, qualification seems to be a mere formality.

Unbeaten for 25 consecutive international matches

The Gauchos have played eleven games and are still unbeaten with seven wins and four draws. They already have an eight-point lead over current third-placed Ecuador, who, like all their rivals, have one match more to their name.

Nevertheless, Scaloni will be playing with his best eleven in the away match in Montevideo, in which once again nothing should go wrong. Looking at their recent record, betting on an away win for the Albiceleste in Uruguay against Argentina is a very good bet. After all, the Argentine national team is currently unbeaten in 25 consecutive international matches (17 wins, eight draws).

Predicted line-up of Argentina:
E. Martínez – Otamendi – Acuna – Tagliafico – Pezzella – De Paul – Paredes – Lo Celso – Di María – L. Martínez – Messi

Uruguay – Argentina Direct comparison / H2H balance

Head to head: 56 – 44 – 88

A total of 188 meetings have already taken place between the two nations and with 88 victories, the Argentines clearly lead the direct comparison. Most recently, the Albiceleste also won the first leg against Uruguay by a clear 3-0 score.

Uruguay – Argentina betting tips

When it comes to Uruguay vs Argentina, the prediction has to take into account the Gauchos’ strength of form compared to the Celeste’s recent not-so-good form. The Uruguayan side have picked up just one point from a possible nine in their last three games, while the Albiceleste have now gone 25 consecutive international matches without losing.

With figures like these, there is almost no alternative to betting on an away win for the Argentines, especially as coach Lionel Scaloni can call on all his key players. The Gauchos will travel to Montevideo with their best players.

Accordingly, we recommend tip 2, for which betting odds of 2.42 are available for Uruguay against Argentina.
