Fourth vs. fifth – top game at White Hart Lane

The top five in the English Premier League have managed to pull away a little after twelve matchdays. On the last weekend of November, there are now two direct duels between the top five in the current table. On Sunday afternoon, fourth-placed Tottenham and Aston Villa (5th) will face each other in the capital. A bet on the hosts is slightly favored with odds around 2.30.

The Postecoglou team suffered two bitter defeats before the last international break of the year and will be looking to return to winning ways in front of their home crowd. However, this will not be an easy task, as the visitors from Birmingham have been the non-plus-ultra in English soccer in recent weeks. In the current form table of the last eight games, Emery’s team is actually in first place. Why our prediction for Tottenham v Aston Villa is nevertheless based on the hosts is explained in the following lines:

With 24 and 29 goals respectively, both attacking lines have impressed so far this season. Neutral spectators are therefore in for an entertaining game. The game at White Hart Lane kicks off on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Tottenham – statistics & current form

After the departure of Harry Kane, there was a lot of concern about how Spurs would perform this season. Under new coach Ange Postecoglou, however, they made a brilliant start to the season and did not lose any of their first ten league games. However, Tottenham lost their aura of invincibility in the derby against Chelsea, which was mainly due to being double short-handed. Despite being two men short, the Australian head coach allowed his remaining nine players to play very offensively and was thwarted towards the end. Two goals were only conceded in stoppage time

Bitter defeat against the Wolves

The defeat against Wolves on the final matchday was even more painful than the defeat against their city rivals. In the away game at Molineux Stadium, new signing Brennan Johnson gave them an early lead, which held for a long time. As against Chelsea, Spurs conceded two goals in stoppage time (90+1 and 90+7) and were left empty-handed. Tottenham have now conceded six goals in stoppage time this season, including the last four – a league record!

Despite the two defeats, we believe the home side have the advantage. Spurs have only lost one of their last five home games against teams in the top five (against Arsenal in January 2023). With 24 goals this season, Tottenham have scored twice per game on average. In addition, Tottenham have now scored at least once in 24 consecutive Premier League games, only Brighton have a longer streak with at least one goal (28 games). Since Emery’s team is also very offensive, the prediction for Tottenham vs Aston Villa is not only an Over 2.5 but also an Over 3.5.

Predicted Tottenham line-up:

Aston Villa – Statistics & current form

It was mentioned at the outset that head coach Unai Emery’s Villans are top of the form table in their last eight games. Indeed, the Birmingham side have been in impressive form in recent weeks, winning six of their last eight league games (one draw, one defeat). The visitors are by no means lacking in confidence and yet the odds on Tottenham vs Aston Villa are not particularly lucrative

Big discrepancy between home and away games

Because things have only been average away from home so far. Villa Park in Birmingham is a veritable fortress, as the Villans have won all six home games there and boast an impressive goal difference of 23:5. In all six home games, the bet on the handicap win was crowned with success. Away from home, on the other hand, Aston Villa have only managed two wins and three defeats. Defeats at Newcastle and Liverpool are justifiable, but the most recent 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest was surprising. Emery’s charges have only won two of their ten away games this season.

The big difference in attacking performance is also striking. 23 goals in six home games is outstanding, while Aston Villa have only scored a meagre six goals away from home. Despite their excellent form, these statistics mean that betting on the visitors is not advisable.

Predicted Aston Villa line-up:

Tottenham – Aston Villa head-to-head comparison / H2H record

Before last season, the team from Birmingham had only won two of their last 21 league games against Tottenham. That figure has been doubled in the space of just a few months, as Aston Villa secured the League Double against the capital side for the first time since the 1990s. Should the visitors retain the upper hand on Sunday, Aston Villa would also win two consecutive games at White Hart Lane for the first time since 1995. Tottenham’s hopes rest on Heung-Min Son in particular, with the former Germany international scoring five goals in six games against the Villans.

Tottenham – Aston Villa betting tip

According to other statistics from the direct comparison area, it is also not advisable to bet on a draw between Tottenham and Aston Villa at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon. In the last 16 Premier League games between the two teams, not a single point has been shared. The capital side have won twelve times, while the Birmingham side have won four – including the last two games

Despite the last two defeats, Tottenham continue to play very attractive soccer. Success will return and we are confident that the prediction on Tottenham vs Aston Villa on Sunday will be successful. We are placing a bet of five units on this. The main reason for this is the very poor performance of Emery’s team away from home. Just two wins in their last ten appearances away from home does not reflect their good form. Since both teams are generally very offensive, the bet “Tottenham win & both teams score” can also look very exciting
