Déjà vu for MUFC?

Only last weekend the two teams met in the Premier League. Now the match between the Red Devils and the Villans will also take place in the EFL Cup.

Although AVFC won their most recent must-win clash 3-1, the bookies are currently offering odds of 5.50 on Manchester United vs Aston Villa for Tip 2.

This is surprising, as United have only won one of their last four matches against Aston Villa since May 2021. The high quotes on a win from AVFC therefore have value.

In the last three years, Aston Villa have only been knocked out in the third round of the EFL Cup once. In 2019/20, AVFC even featured in the League Cup final. United, on the other hand, have already been eliminated in the third round of the EFL Cup last season. Déjà vu, therefore, cannot be ruled out.

The Villans have tasted blood with their recent win over MUFC and go into the upcoming cup game with a broad chest two competitive games before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. If AVFC carry the momentum from the weekend game, there is a very realistic chance of a cup coup.

Manchester United – Statistics & current form

Manchester United conceded a heavy defeat against AVFC last week. With this, MUFC missed a great chance to minimise the gap to Spurs from London. It is likely that United will spend the winter in fifth place over the 2022 World Cup. A jump to fourth place – at least as things stand at present – is no longer possible.

Before the 14th and thus last matchday in the Premier League before the World Cup in Qatar, Manchester United still have the league match against FFC. Before that, however, MUFC coach Erik ten Hag’s side must also play their home match against Aston Villa in the third round of the EFL Cup.

Last year, Manchester United failed to progress in their League Cup opener against West Ham, bowing out in the third round of that competition for the first time since 2018. In contrast, in the previous two years, Man United appeared in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

Have United digested their recent league defeat yet?

As Erik ten Hag’s side face a Premier League rival in the third round of the EFL Cup, it remains to be seen whether the Dutchman will fire up the rotation machine. However, there is a tendency to use key players in the cup tie against AVFC.

Six players in the Red Devils’ ranks will miss the cup match against the Villans. In addition to the suspended Greenwood, six players are currently unavailable due to injury. In return, Erik ten Hag can rely on Fernandes for the cup match. The Portuguese missed the last league match due to a yellow card and could therefore be used in the EFL Cup.

Manchester United have only lost once at home to AVFC in their last ten competitive games at Old Trafford. The last time the two clubs met in a cup tie – in the FA Cup, mind you – MUFC beat the Villans 1-0. If you bet on MUFC to win the Manchester United vs. Aston Villa match, odds of 1.61 will be paid out.

Aston Villa – Statistics & current form

Unai Emery made a successful coaching debut at AVFC. The Villans beat Manchester United 3-1 in their first competitive game under the Spaniard’s guidance to extend their points cushion over the relegation places. Villa are thus expected to spend the winter in a non-relegation spot through the 2022 World Cup.

Emery and his team are now aiming for another victory in the cup. Because they already scored three points against MUFC last weekend, Aston Villa will go into the cup match against the top club from Manchester with a broad chest. The Villans will be looking to reach the fourth round of the EFL Cup for the third time in the last seven years.

On four occasions, however, AVFC have been eliminated early. This was also the case last season, when Villa were eliminated by Chelsea. If the Red Devils pull off a surprise coup at Old Trafford, betting odds of 5.50 on the visitors are available for risk-averse punters on Manchester United vs Aston Villa.

Villa build on momentum after manager change

After last weekend’s strong performance, the Villans’ next surprise cannot be ruled out. Especially in the offensive game AVFC knew how to convince last weekend. Although Emery only had a short settling-in period, the Spaniard set the right impulses to inspire the offensive play of the Villans.

In the four matches before the change of coach, Aston Villa failed to score three times. If AVFC carry the momentum from the last match against MUFC, it is obvious that Villa will also score in the cup match against United.

Unai Emery will only have to do without four players due to injury. It is quite possible that the Spaniard will field a starting eleven similar to the one he used against United last weekend. The injury to offensive star Coutinho remains a bitter setback. The 30-year-old will even miss the World Cup with Brazil.

Predicted line-up of Aston Villa:
Olsen; Cash, Chambers, Mings, Digne; Kamara, McGinn, Ramsey; Bailey, Watkins, Buendia

Manchester United – Aston Villa Direct comparison / H2H balance

In the last 196 must-win duels between the two clubs, Manchester United have usually retained the upper hand. MUFC won 102 matches against AVFC. United, on the other hand, have only lost 52 times. One of those 52 defeats came at the Villans last weekend.

In Emery’s coaching debut, Villa beat Manchester United 3-1. This was AVFC’s second successive unbeaten run against United. It was also the second game in a row where a prediction of Over 3.5 goals in the game paid off between Manchester United vs Aston Villa.

Manchester United – Aston Villa Tip

The Villans approach the encounter with MUFC with confidence. Just last weekend, new head coach Unai Emery’s side ensured a clear balance of power with a 3-1 win over the Red Devils. If they build on that, Villa also have a realistic chance of scoring a coup in the cup match against United.

Especially as the League Cup is not particularly important for teams like Manchester United. The Red Devils already had to bow out in the third round of the EFL Cup last year. A déjà vu can therefore not be ruled out this season.

In contrast to the bookmakers, we do not see MUFC as favourites in the cup match against Villa and expect a game on equal terms. As was the case last weekend, it should only be a matter of time before the three-goal mark is cracked. Just how much attacking power there is in the Villans’ ranks was already evident last weekend against United.

With a stake of five units, we place our bet on Manchester United vs. Aston Villa at odds of 1.80 on over 2.5 goals in the match. This would be the third competitive match in a row in which the three-goal mark has been broken.
