Low-scoring basement duel on the Balearic Islands?

The fact that the Saturday evening La Liga match between Mallorca and Sevilla – betting tip and odds provided by Wettbasis in this article – has to be described as a basement clash says a lot about how badly the 2023/24 season has gone for both clubs so far. The reigning Europa League winners have now gone eight league games in a row without another three-pointer (six draws, two defeats). RCD Mallorca have now gone ten consecutive league games without a win (four draws, six defeats)

Both clubs managed a clean sheet in the Copa del Rey against lower-ranked opponents during the week. However, neither the Andalusians nor the players from the Spanish Mediterranean island are likely to have generated much momentum from this. In any case, the victories were not overly big, which reflects the shortcoming of both clubs in recent weeks: their lack of attacking penetration. It is therefore interesting to predict that Mallorca vs Sevilla will not be a high-scoring game

In principle, the role of favorites should rather be attributed to the visitors, who have remained unbeaten in six La Liga duels with RCD Mallorca (four wins, two draws). However, Sevilla FC are one of six Spanish first division teams who have yet to win a single away game in La Liga in the 2023/24 season (three draws, three defeats).

With just seven away goals in six games, the Nervionenses’ scoring threat on foreign pitches is not too good either, which is why we ultimately find the greatest value in betting on under 2.5 goals

Mallorca – Statistics & current form

After a one-year interlude in La Liga 2, Real Club Deportivo Mallorca returned to the top flight of Spanish soccer in the summer of 2021 immediately after relegation. After a complicated first year, which ended in 16th place in the table, the Pirates finished ninth this summer.

It is therefore all the more surprising that the Bermellones are now facing such great difficulties again in the 2023/24 season under coach Javier Aguirre. Having won just one of their 15 league games this season, the team from the Balearic Islands are currently only 17th in the table

Six of the seven home games in La Liga have ended in draws

RCD Mallorca have now gone ten consecutive league games without a win (six draws, four defeats). Last Sunday, the Pirates were held to a goalless draw at home to newly promoted Alavés.

This makes the Bermellones one of only three teams in La Liga who have yet to win a single home game in the 2023/24 season. Curiously, because six of their seven home games in La Liga have ended in draws, the players from the Spanish Mediterranean island have only lost one of their home games so far

On average, only 1.3 goals were scored in seven home games

It is particularly striking that none of La Liga’s 20 stadiums have seen as little action as the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix. Javier Aguirre’s side have scored just four home goals in seven games (a league-low), but have also conceded just five home goals, which is the sixth-best figure in Spain’s top flight.

Accordingly, the betting tip for Mallorca v Sevilla is that there will not be too many goals in this basement duel either. After all, no more than 2.5 goals have been scored in any of the last six meetings between the two clubs.

Mallorca’s probable line-up:

Sevilla – Statistics & current form

Sevilla FC already endured an extremely complicated year in the 2022/23 season, which only ended in a complete debacle because the Nervionenses secured overall victory in the Europa League for the eighth time in the club’s history despite poor performances in La Liga.

Despite a sobering eleventh place in the final table, the Rojiblancos were once again able to participate in the UEFA Champions League. However, the Andalusians remained winless in five group games (two draws, three defeats). If they do not manage an away win at RC Lens next Tuesday, they will not even be able to spend the winter in the Europa League and would be out of the European competitions completely as the last team in Group B.

Still without a La Liga away win in the 2023/24 season

Given the Nervionenses’ recent form, however, there really isn’t much to suggest an away win in France. And the odds are not exactly in the Rojiblancos’ favor ahead of the clash between Mallorca and Sevilla either.

No wonder, as the club, which has been coached by Uruguayan Diego Alonso since October 10, is one of six clubs still waiting for their first away win in La Liga in the 2023/24 season (three draws, three defeats)

Unwinning for eight league games in a row

The Rojiblancos have scored just seven goals in their six La Liga outings, which is not exactly a fearsome average. There is therefore plenty of value in betting that the Nervionenses will also get their teeth into the Balearics.

If the Andalusians fail to win away at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, they will extend their winless streak, which currently stands at eight league games (six draws, two defeats). However, the fact that ten players are currently injured or unavailable due to injury does not exactly increase hopes of a turnaround.

Predicted Sevilla line-up:

Mallorca – Sevilla head-to-head comparison / H2H result

Head to head: 13 – 21 – 26

A total of 60 meetings have taken place between the two clubs so far and Sevilla FC lead the direct comparison with 26 wins. The Andalusians already won both league games against RCD Mallorca in the 2022/23 season and are unbeaten in six meetings with the Pirates (four wins, two draws).

Mallorca – Sevilla betting tip

All in all, there are balanced betting odds available for Mallorca against Sevilla. The natural favorites would be the Nervionenses, who are unbeaten in six meetings with the Mallorcans (four wins, two draws). However, the team from Andalusia are winless in six La Liga away games in the 2023/24 season (three draws, three defeats) and have recently shown a similar lack of form to the team from the Balearic Islands, having lost eight league games in a row.

It is therefore difficult to predict the outcome of the match between Mallorca and Sevilla. As it is unlikely to be a high-scoring game at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, we are avoiding the three-way system by betting on under 2.5 goals.
