Catch the Wolves at their favorite opponent again?

While the team from Rheinhessen are level on points with bottom-placed Darmstadt in the relegation places only because of their superior goal difference, the Wolves are also not satisfied with their tenth place in the table. The club from Lower Saxony have already lost nine of their 16 league games in the 2023/24 season and thus have one more defeat than FSV (eight). Nevertheless, our betting tip for Mainz against Wolfsburg is for the visitors to win a point

The Rheinhessen have been too weak overall so far this season. Over the course of the season, they have won just one of their last 21 Bundesliga games (eight draws, twelve defeats). FSV have currently gone six league games in a row without another three-pointer (four draws, two defeats). Accordingly, the prediction for Mainz v Wolfsburg is that VfL will be able to take something worthwhile from the Mewa Arena

Last season, Wolfsburg won both the first leg and the second leg against 1. FSV Mainz 05 by 3:0. However, it should certainly not be that high-scoring this time. Not only has no other Bundesliga team conceded fewer goals in their last seven league games than the Rheinhessen (just four), but Mainz and Wolfsburg are the only two teams in the top flight of German soccer who have not scored more than two goals per game in 2023/24.

It therefore makes a lot of sense to bet on a low-scoring match. As we also think the visitors are much more likely to win, we recommend the combined bet on the double chance X2 at under 3.5 goals

Mainz – Statistics & current form

A year ago, 1. FSV Mainz 05 was even in the fight for Europe, but then finished the 2022/23 season in ninth place. Nevertheless, the Rheinhessen club had nothing to do with the relegation battle. This made the collapse at the start of the new season all the more surprising.

In the course of a long winless streak, even the popular Bo Svensson had to pack his bags. Under his successor Jan Siewert – who has since progressed from an interim solution to a permanent one and has a contract until summer 2026 – the club promptly won its first league match against RB Leipzig 2:0

Mainz have won just one of their last 21 Bundesliga games

The Nullfünfer then went six games in a row without a win (four draws, two defeats). As a result, Mainz have just one win in their last 21 Bundesliga games this season (eight draws, twelve defeats).

The fact that the Red & Whites did not end the winter in a relegation place, but were at least in the relegation zone, is solely due to the fact that they have a better goal difference (-15) than the two teams with the same number of points, Cologne (-18) and Darmstadt (-21). On the other hand, they are already three points off the safety margin

Mainz has the second-weakest offense in the Bundesliga

The situation is correspondingly precarious for the only remaining Bundesliga team from Rhineland-Palatinate, which is why we are quite surprised that the bookmakers’ odds are swinging in favor of the Siewert eleven for Mainz against Wolfsburg.

On a positive note, not even leaders Leverkusen have conceded fewer goals than the Nullfünfer in the last seven matchdays (both just four). However, with just 13 goals from 16 league games, the Rheinhessen’s shortcomings are easy to identify: FSV lack attacking penetration, which is also reflected in the fact that not a single player in the squad has scored more than two Bundesliga goals so far this season.

Predicted Mainz line-up:

Wolfsburg – Statistics & current form

VfL Wolfsburg only missed out on qualifying for a European competition on match day 34 of the 2022/23 season. As a result, there was no further upheaval and Niko Kovac was allowed to enter his second year as head coach of the 2009 German champions.

However, retaining the coach has not really paid off so far. The club from Lower Saxony have already lost nine of their first 16 league games (six wins, one draw), leaving them in a completely disappointing tenth place in the table for the winter and already five points behind sixth place.

No Bundesliga team conceded more away defeats in 2023/24 than Wolfsburg

Of course, the train to Europe has not yet left the station without the Green-Whites. Nevertheless, the potential for improvement is immense. Not much has come together, especially away from home. No other Bundesliga club has lost more away Bundesliga games in 2023/24 than VfL (six).

Even against this background, the betting tip for an away win for the Wolves against Wolfsburg is not exactly under favorable auspices, although the Lower Saxons have won all of their last three Bundesliga duels with FSV with a total of 11:0 goals

Wolfsburg have lost seven of their last ten Bundesliga matches

Critically, however, the Wolves have been anything but secure defensively of late. Only Gladbach (15), Hoffenheim and Dortmund (14 each) have conceded more goals than Wolfsburg (13) in the last seven matchdays.

They have also won just two of their last ten Bundesliga games (one draw, seven defeats), with VfL picking up a disappointing total of just seven points out of a possible 30 during this period. Nevertheless, Wolfsburg have won seven of their last nine Bundesliga games against Mainz, making them the team with the most wins in the top flight of German soccer since the start of 2019.

Predicted Wolfsburg line-up:

Mainz – Wolfsburg Direct comparison / H2H result

Head to head: 10 – 15 – 19

A total of 44 meetings have taken place between the two teams so far, with VfL Wolfsburg leading the direct comparison with 19 wins. The Wolves have already picked up the full six points against Mainz in 2022/23 and have won three in a row against the Nullfünfer, who have not scored a goal of their own in any of these three games

Mainz – Wolfsburg betting tip

The betting odds for Mainz vs Wolfsburg are in favor of the home side, which is a very risky assessment in our eyes. Jan Siewert has stabilized the FSV defence, which has only conceded four goals in the last seven league games (best in the league). In fact, however, the Nullfünfer have only won one of their last 21 Bundesliga games (eight draws, twelve defeats), which is why our bias is clearly towards the visitors, who have already won six league games in 2023/24 despite their nine defeats

Because there shouldn’t be too many goals in this game, the prediction for Mainz vs Wolfsburg is double chance X2 with a maximum of three goals. After all, these are the only two Bundesliga teams to have never scored more than two goals per league game in 2023/24
