Will Bayern win at San Siro?

The 2022/23 Champions League kicks off with a real banger. Inter Milan will welcome FC Bayern to the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. This match is nothing less than a rematch of the 2010 final, when the Italians won the trophy in Madrid. The German record champions therefore still have an old score to settle with the Nerazurri.

However, there are also good reasons why lower quotes are offered on a FC Bayern win. Since the 2003/04 season, the Munich side have won all 18 of their opening games in the Champions League and have not conceded a goal in their last nine matchday fixtures.

In addition, the Munich team has not lost to an Italian team in ten matches in the Champions League. Therefore, Juliana Nagelsmann’s team should have good prospects at the San Siro. In any case, at first glance we are giving a prediction of an away win in the Inter Milan vs Bayern match and assume that Bayern’s strong streak will hold.

There is also a lot to suggest that quite a few goals will be scored. In the last ten games that the Italians have played against German teams in the top flight, a total of 39 goals have been scored, an average of 3.9 goals. So it is almost logical that you should also think about betting on excess goals in the match between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.

Inter Milan – Statistics & current form

Inter Milan’s problem in the Champions League in recent years has always been that they get off to a poor start. As a result, the Nerazzuri have won just one of their last six opening matches in the top flight. This means that the Italians have also usually had problems getting into the last 16.

Derby defeat in the minds

In Serie A, Simone Inzaghi’s team have also struggled this season. Three out of five games have only been won. With nine points, Inter are currently only in seventh place in the Italian league standings. That doesn’t sound like they can really be a threat to FCB, so we’d rather look at the odds for an away win in the Inter Milan vs Bayern clash.

Simone Inzaghi also has something to make up for on Wednesday, as the big derby against AC Milan was on the agenda last weekend. Not only did they have to concede the championship to their local rivals last year, but they also suffered another 3-2 defeat. The goals of Marcelo Brozovic and Edin Dzeko were not enough for a point.

Edin Dzeko’s goal could well put him in the starting eleven on Wednesday, especially as he knows German football very well from his time in Wolfsburg. Also missing is striker Romelu Lukaku, who will not make his comeback until October due to muscular problems. Apart from that, Simone Inzaghi will only have to do without young full-back Dalbert.

Predicted line-up of Inter Milan:
Handanovic – Skriniar, de Vrij, Bastoni – Brozovic – Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Darmian – Dzeko, Martinez – Coach: Inzaghi

Last matches played by Inter Milan:

Serie A
03/09/2022 – AC Milan 3 – 2 Inter Milan

31/08/2022 – Inter Milan 3 – 1 Cremonese

27/08/2022 – Lazio Roma 3 – 1 Inter Milan

21/08/2022 – Inter Milan 3 – 0 Spezia

14/08/2022 – Lecce 1 – 2 Inter Milan

Bayern – Statistics & current form

The eyes are on Sadio Mane. The Senegalese currently stands at 24 goals in the Champions League. After Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o and Mo Salah, he could become the fourth African to reach the 25-goal mark in Europe’s top flight. The Bayern attacker would do best to score that goal as early as Wednesday, when he can set out to match Eto’o’s 30 goals.

Unbeaten this season

There can be little doubt about a Bayern win. For one thing, there’s that terrific starting record of 18 opening wins in a row. Then there is the fact that Bayern have not lost to Italian clubs for ten games (8 wins, two draws). So the puzzle is coming together more and more and basically, between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, you can’t avoid a prediction on the German record champions.

However, Bayern have not looked quite so confident in the Bundesliga lately. After three wins at the start, they only managed a 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach and Union Berlin. Julian Nagelsmann’s team was behind in both games and at least demonstrated comeback qualities.

Now, however, it is time for a win again and Julian Nagelsmann can send his desired formation into the race. Obviously, Bayern do not have a single injured player in their squad at the moment. Especially in attack, the Munich team is now spoilt for choice. It is conceivable that Serge Gnabry and Thomas Müller will be back in the starting eleven on Wednesday.

Predicted Bayern line-up:
Neuer – Pavard, de Ligt, Hernandez, Davies – Kimmich, Sabitzer – Müller, Coman, Gnabry – Mane – Coach: Nagelsmann

Last matches played by Bayern:

Bundesliga
03/09/2022 – Union Berlin 1 – 1 Bayern Munich

DFB Cup
01/09/2022 – Viktoria Köln 0 – 5 Bayern Munich

Bundesliga
27/08/2022 – Bayern Munich 1 – 1 Gladbach

21/08/2022 – VfL Bochum 0 – 7 Bayern Munich

14/08/2022 – Bayern Munich 2 – 0 VfL Wolfsburg

Inter Milan – Bayern Direct comparison / H2H balance

Eight duels have been played between Inter Milan and FC Bayern to date. In the direct comparison, the Italians are ahead with 4:3 victories. They have also drawn one other match. In 1989, Bayern prevailed in the last 16 of the Europa League because of the more away goals scored. Then there were two duels in 2006 in the group stage of the royal league, which ended with a draw and an away win for Bayern.

Then in 2010 came the grand final of the top flight, which Diego Milito decided for the Italians with a brace. Just one year later, Bayern were defeated by the Nerazzuri in the last 16 of the Champions League. The last clash until today was a test match in 2017, which the Italians won 2-0.

Inter Milan – Bayern Tip

Statistics in the Champions League do not suggest that Inter Milan will score on Wednesday. The opening game in the top flight is often a problem for the Nerazzuri. It’s a completely different story for Bayern, who have always won the first game in the group stage for 18 years. Moreover, the Munich team has an excellent record against Italian clubs.

Bayern have revealed weaknesses in their last two games in the Bundesliga, but have not yet lost a competitive match this season. From this point of view, Bayern should at least not lose.

Inter are also still carrying around the derby defeat against AC Milan. That can either be a hindrance, or the Nerazurri will put everything into the match against the FCB to quickly erase that defeat. We think, however, that this will not succeed and play the betting odds on an away win in the match between Inter Milan and Bayern.
