Will Girona defend their top spot in the table?

It’s the top game in Spain’s La Liga – but with a party that you couldn’t have expected. It was no surprise that a team from Catalonia would be top of the table before the game against Real Madrid – but that this team would not be called FC Barcelona, but Girona FC, was not to be guessed.

For the first time in the club’s history, the northern Catalans are greeting us from the top of the table and will welcome the great Real Madrid on Saturday for a duel between first and second. Predicting a home win for the surprise league leaders in Girona vs. Real Madrid seems bold, but there are good reasons to take a risk here.

But it is also clear that the team from the Spanish capital is not the clear favourite, and you should by no means expect a walkover. Girona have been too good so far, Real Madrid have often struggled in their victories, some of which have come late and close. And in the last three encounters, the royals did not exactly cover themselves with glory against this opponent either.

The Estadi Montilivi on Saturday evening will be an exciting place to watch, as Girona will be venomous, courageous and full of self-confidence. Real will want to counter with their usual calmness and routine. Kick-off for this top match at the top of the table is at 18:30. In our Girona vs Real Madrid preview, we look at odds and exciting tips and give a prediction on how the match could end.

Girona – Statistics & current form

It is the sensation story in La Liga so far: Girona FC greets from the top of the table – for the first time ever. The team of the moment inspires with courageous, attacking, swashbuckling football and has thus collected six wins, one draw and a total of 19 points from the seven games so far. Only FC Barcelona are also still unbeaten.

After the 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad on Matchday 1 – also a remarkable result – Girona have won six games in a row. While new league leader Barcelona surprisingly lost 2-2 in Mallorca during the week, Girona knew how to take advantage of the slip-up of their Catalan rivals: Coach Michel’s team won at Villarreal CF and jumped to 1st place.

Courageous and cheeky: When Girona play, goals are scored

Also worth noting: Girona score the most goals in the league together with Barça – 18 so far. Girona have scored two or more goals in five of their seven games, five against Mallorca (5:3), four against Granada (4:2) and three against Getafe (3:0). This attacking style of play sometimes provides spectacle and entertainment, which is why we think that betting on over 2.5 goals in Girona vs. Real Madrid is obvious. It is also obvious that both will score, as Girona conceded goals in five of their seven games due to their aggressive style of play. A total of 26 goals have already been scored with Girona’s participation. And Real Madrid is not just another opponent coming to the Montilivi.

We even prefer the combination of both tips and think that in Girona vs. Real Madrid the prediction will come true that both will score and over 2.5 goals will be scored.

Real Madrid – Statistics & current form

Of course, betting on goals in this game also makes sense because Real Madrid are involved – the royals have scored in every one of their league games so far. With six wins from seven games, the record champions have started the season just as strongly, with only the derby defeat against Atletico Madrid (1:3) clouding the balance.

Real quickly shook this off, however, with a safe 2-0 win over promoted Las Palmas during the week. Real Madrid are far more concerned about the probable absence of David Alaba, who had to be substituted against Las Palmas with adductor problems. With Eder Militao also unavailable due to a cruciate ligament rupture, the central defensive personnel cover will be thinner – and Real will naturally be more susceptible to conceding goals.

Girona – Real Madrid Direct comparison / H2H-balance

Looking at the direct comparison, we find not only that there are a lot of goals in the pairing. But that Girona are unbeaten in three games against Real Madrid. Last season, they drew 1-1 at the Bernabeu, and at home, the Catalans even dispatched the royals 4-2. Girona have won three of their eight encounters so far, with four wins for Real and one draw.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team should be well aware that Girona will be an uncomfortable place to play.

Girona – Real Madrid Tip

The top match in La Liga promises goals and excitement – and there may even be jubilant home fans again at the end. This is by no means out of the question, after all, Girona are not only in outstanding form, they also knocked off Real at home in Montilivi last season. We therefore suggest odds of 3.50 on average on a win for the league leaders in the Girona vs. Real Madrid match.

Of course it is brave to place your bet on the victory of the small Catalan club, but this courage could also be rewarded with very lucrative odds. And if you want to go one step further, you can even get 5.50 odds with the tip Girona wins and both score. This has always been the case with the Catalans’ three victories so far, which is why we are not afraid to take the risk and place this bet on Girona vs. Real Madrid. High risk – but also high reward, so to speak.
