Will Girona take points off favourites Atletico Madrid?
On Monday, Girona FC will host the team from Atletico Madrid. This match marks the end of the 25th matchday and promises to be very exciting. In this duel two of the best offensives of the first Spanish league meet and therefore we should see one or the other goal. Of course, the visitors are the favourites and this is also reflected in the bookmakers’ betting odds between Girona and Atletico Madrid.
At home, Girona have taken 21 points from twelve games and are sixth in the home table. The home record should therefore encourage their own supporters to at least get a point against Atletico Madrid.
The form of the promoted team in recent weeks is also positive. Girona won three of their last five games and also beat Athletic Bilbao. Therefore, the host should go into the upcoming match confident.
Atletico are in fourth place in the away table and have taken 24 points from twelve away games. Diego Simeone’s side have only lost two games away from home and should therefore also be looking for at least a point in Girona.
In addition, the visitors are unbeaten in the league for eight games and even managed to get a point in the derby against Real Madrid. For this reason, the odds between Girona and Atletico Madrid also point to an away win rather than a win for the home team.
We trust the hosts to pull off a small surprise in this clash and therefore recommend betting on a draw between Girona and Atletico Madrid. Five of the seven duels have ended in a draw and the underdog should have a good chance of winning a point, especially at home.
Girona – Statistics & current form
Girona are in twelfth place in the Spanish first division and thus in midfield. Coach Michel’s team picked up 30 points from the first 24 games and is thus playing a solid season. The coming weeks will be decisive, as the lead over the relegation places is only five points.
On the other hand, the international places are only seven points away. The promoted team can thus look back on the season so far with great satisfaction, as the goal of staying in the league would be fulfilled at the moment.
One of the strongest offensives in the league
The hosts have scored 38 goals in 24 games this season, making them one of the best offensives in La Liga. Only FC Barcelona and Real Madrid found their way into the opponent’s goal more often. Of course, this is a great success for the promoted team.
Defensively, however, things look anything but good, as the Red and Whites have already conceded 38 goals in the current season. This puts Girona FC in 16th place in the league and makes them one of the weakest teams in Spain.
The winter bargain
On 17/01/2023, Girona FC signed right winger Viktor Tsygankov from Dynamo Kiev. The Ukrainian has a market value of 22 million euros and came to Spain for only five million euros. The transfer can therefore be considered a real bargain.
However, the signing of the Ukrainian was not only an economic success, but also a real gain on the sporting side. Tsygankov scored one goal in five games and set up three more goals.
On loan player from Inter Miami
Taty Castellanos joined Girona FC on loan from Inter Miami before the season. Both teams are part of the City Group and as such are training clubs for Manchester City. So far, the loan deal has been a real win-win for both club and player.
The Argentine centre-forward has scored seven goals across the competition and set up another. This makes Castellanos the top scorer in Spanish coach Michel’s squad. A firm commitment is therefore in the offing.

Atletico Madrid – Statistics & current form
Atletico Madrid are in third place in the Spanish first division and are thus playing a good season. Nevertheless, Diego Simeone’s team is running behind expectations, as the Madrilenians have nothing to do with the title fight. They are already 17 points behind the leaders from Barcelona.
With 45 points from 24 games, the visitors are in the thick of the fight for the Champions League places. A win in Girona would therefore be very important in order to keep the competition at bay.
Lack of consistency
The visitors have scored 38 goals this season and share the third-best offence in the league with Girona. On average, Atletico Madrid score 1.58 goals per game.
With 19 goals conceded in 24 games, the Madrilenians are in second place in a league-wide comparison together with Real Madrid. Thus, Diego Simeone’s team is one of the best teams in La Liga, both offensively and defensively.
The biggest problem is clearly the lack of consistency, because while the visiting team sometimes plays very good football, there are always games in which almost nothing happens.
Between genius and madness
Alvaro Morata is currently on loan from Juventus Turin to Atletico Madrid and doing so quite successfully. In the current season, the centre-forward has scored eleven goals and set up two others. Nevertheless, he is often criticised.
The Spanish attacker has been directly involved in 267 goals in 529 games in his career and yet he is often frowned upon. This is primarily due to the fact that his chance conversion often leaves much to be desired. There are many videos circulating on social media in which the centre-forward misses the goal from the shortest distances.
Back to old strength?
Antoine Griezmann was unrecognisable after his move to FC Barcelona and returned to Madrid after a short time. The Frenchman was never really happy at the Catalans and was deeply criticised. In the meantime, he has rediscovered his form and is once again a joy on the field.
In the current season, the attacker has scored nine goals and set up eleven assists. This makes him the top scorer in Diego Simeone’s team and he was able to build on his good performance at the World Cup in Qatar.

Girona – Atletico Madrid Direct Comparison / H2H Balance
The direct comparison between the two teams goes to the visitors from Madrid. Atletico have won two games against Girona, while the hosts are still looking for their first win. Five of the seven encounters have ended in a draw, so it is not unlikely that the points will be shared next Monday.
All in all, the visitors are favoured in this match and therefore our prediction between Girona and Atletico Madrid goes more in the direction of the visiting team.
Girona – Atletico Madrid Tip
We play the tip “double chance” for the visitors in combination with over 1.5 goals between Girona and Atletico Madrid. The hosts have one of the weakest defences in the league and therefore it is hard to imagine that the home team will get through this match without conceding a goal.
On the other hand, the offensive qualities are undeniable, so a goal from Girona FC is quite realistic. However, we do not trust the promoted team with more than a point, because Atletico Madrid is much better equipped, especially across the board.
Alternatively, we recommend the tip “both teams score – yes” between Girona and Atletico Madrid. The Madrilenians won the first leg 2-1 at home and we can very well imagine a similar result in the second leg. The host scored 23 goals in twelve home games and should therefore also find the way into the opponent’s goal against Atletico.
