Will Modeste score on his BVB debut?

Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez, Memphis Depay and even Cristiano Ronaldo at times. In recent weeks, real superstars have been traded as replacements for Sebastien Haller, who is suffering from cancer. In the end, however, the Dortmund officials chose Anthony Modeste. A strong header who knows the Bundesliga and has already proven what he can give a team.

On Friday evening, the ex-Cologne player could now celebrate his debut in the black-yellow jersey. BVB will then travel to Breisgau. Before the opening match of the second matchday, slightly lower odds are offered on the away win between Freiburg and Dortmund. Borussia already had to experience how complicated away games in the Black Forest can be last season. There, too, the Sport-Club kept the upper hand on the second matchday in the same constellation with 2:1.

The team of coach Edin Terzic is therefore warned, but at the same time goes into the match with a lot of self-confidence. After the cup victory against the Munich Lions and the important win against Leverkusen, the third win in the third match is expected. However, the Streich eleven, who triumphed 4-0 in Augsburg on the first matchday, is also pursuing the same goal and, in view of this performance, makes it difficult for us to predict the outcome of the match for Freiburg vs. Dortmund.

Freiburg – Statistics & current form

SC Freiburg are in for an exciting season. For the first time since 2013/14, the Sport-Club will be represented in an international group stage. But before the Europa League starts at the beginning of September, it is important to collect important points in the Bundesliga. The Breisgau side already made a start last weekend, when they recorded an unchallenged 4-0 victory in Augsburg.

However, this success should be properly classified. On the one hand, because the value of the expected goals was just 1.3 and the SCF therefore acted brutally effectively. On the other hand, because FCA is of course not a real yardstick compared to BVB. Against this backdrop, it remains to be seen whether the South Germans will be able to trip up the Black and Yellows on Friday evening. In any case, we would refrain from betting on the home side in the clash between Freiburg and Dortmund.

Dortmund remain Streich’s “fearful opponents “

This is due in no small part to coach Christian Streich, who has not conceded more goals against any other Bundesliga team in his coaching career (14) and has conceded more goals (51) than against Dortmund. In addition, Dortmund suffered by far the highest defeat of the season in 2021/22 with a 1:5 loss. However, that is only half the truth, as Sport-Club won the first leg 2-1 in front of their home crowd and have now won two home games in a row against BVB.

In terms of quality, Freiburg have made some really good transfers in the summer. With Matthias Ginter, Ritsu Doan and Michael Gregoritsch, three newcomers immediately put their names on the scoresheet on the first matchday. Added to this is the strength in standards that has also been transferred into the new season. Thanks to Vincenzo Grifo’s outstanding resting balls, free kicks and corner kicks can always be described as offensive weapons. In the pre-season, 24 goals were scored from set-pieces; on the first matchday, it was already two goals again.

Due to the confidence gained from the Augsburg game, the winning mentality that is still developing and the standards mentioned, we think it is a viable betting option to consider odds of over 2.5 goals between Freiburg and Dortmund. Ezekwem, Höler, Schade and Kübler have to miss out due to injury. Otherwise, coach Streich has no reason to make many changes to the starting eleven.

Predicted line-up of Freiburg:
Flekken – Sildillia, Ginter, Lienhart, Günter – M. Eggestein, Höfler – Doan, Sallai, Grifo – Gregoritsch

Dortmund – Statistics & current form

Similarly to SC Freiburg, Borussia Dortmund also celebrated the perfect start to this season. With 1:0, the direct competitor for the Champions League, Bayer Leverkusen, was put in their place. Looking back on the past 35 Bundesliga home games, it was also only the second success that came by this narrowest of all results. In the second half, goalkeeper Gregor Kobel earned top marks when he saved two top-class goals from Patrik Schick.

Despite the perfect start to the season with a success in the DFB Cup and the opening win in the Bundesliga and the white waistcoats preserved in both cases, all that glitters is far from gold. The offensive did not develop as well as usual against the Werkself and the defence has yet to prove that it can survive pressure phases of the opponent without any problems.

Emotional return for speaker Schlotterbeck

Apart from that, it will be interesting to see if Borussia can improve on their almost traditional opening Bundesliga win this time around. In the past eight seasons, a three-goal win has always been celebrated on the first matchday. In the last two seasons, however, there was an immediate defeat away from home. Is this a bad omen for Friday night’s difficult away match at the Europa-Park-Stadion?

In terms of personnel, we are extremely curious to see whether coach Edin Terzic will immediately start Anthony Modeste. Although Moukoko was recently involved in the creation of the goal against Leverkusen and the new coach thinks highly of the youngster, Modeste naturally brings a completely different experience and dimension to the game. Should the freshest newcomer indeed start from the beginning, we can even very well imagine that in the match Freiburg vs. Dortmund a prediction on a goal by the Frenchman will pay off.

In the back four, Schlotterbeck and Hummels will once again defend centrally. Süle continues to be out with a muscle injury, Akanji is not considered and is expected to leave the club. For Schlotterbeck, however, it will be a special game, as he made the leap to one of the best German centre-backs in the league and also to an international player in Breisgau. Last season, he was the player with the most tackles for Sport-Club, who also had the most ball contacts of all SCF players on average per game. Morey and Reyna are the remaining professionals in the hospital.

Predicted Dortmund line-up:
Kobel – Meunier, Hummels, N. Schlotterbeck, Guerreiro – Dahoud, Bellingham – Adeyemi, Reus, Malen – Modeste

Freiburg – Dortmund Direct comparison / H2H-balance

44 times this match has been played in the Bundesliga. Borussia Dortmund has won 28 of them. Only in five cases did the Sport-Club retain the upper hand. However, two of these five victories were in the Breisgau club’s most recent two home games. In 2020/2021 & 2021/22, the Black Forest side won both with 2:1.

In addition, the 2.5 goal mark has been broken in six of the last seven direct duels. Another indication that we will see goals on Friday evening. By the way, the match will be broadcast on DAZN.

Freiburg – Dortmund Tip

The opening match of the Bundesliga last Friday between Frankfurt and Bayern was already decided after less than half an hour. Nevertheless, the fans present in the Deutsche Bank Park could not complain about a lack of entertainment. They saw seven goals. For Friday’s match on the second matchday, we expect a more exciting, but once again also a high-scoring affair.

In six of the past seven duels between these teams, at least three goals were scored. Freiburg scored four goals in their opener, while BVB has been known for years for its strong offensive, which is now getting an additional boost with the signing of Anthony Modeste. Given the good standards of both teams, danger always beckons on both sides.

We therefore play the betting odds for the over 2.5 between Freiburg and Dortmund. These are currently at 1.57 and are worth a stake of six units to us.

Alternatively, it is also conceivable to bet that the black and yellows will not leave the pitch as losers. Although the last two appearances in Breisgau were lost, the record against the SCF reads impressive. The previous impressions against 1860 Munich and Leverkusen were also quite positive. The X2 combined with goalscoring on both sides brings a 1.90 with it.
