Do the Black Forest side regain their old strength at home?

In terms of play, SC Freiburg showed a much better performance at home against Eintracht Frankfurt than in their first league match after the World Cup break, which resulted in a 6-0 defeat in Wolfsburg. However, with a 1-1 draw against the Hessians, the Black Forest side remained winless in their second match in 2023 (one draw, one defeat). It’s correspondingly complicated to bet on a home win for the Sport-Club in Freiburg against Augsburg.

On paper, however, almost everything speaks in favour of the kickers from Breisgau. The SCF is unbeaten in seven Bundesliga home games (five wins, two draws) and now receives its declared favourite opponent. The Black Forest side have only lost four of their 21 Bundesliga games against the Fuggerstädter (ten wins, seven draws), which definitely influences the forecast for Freiburg against Augsburg.

Even in the first leg, the Sport-Club secured a brilliant 4-0 away win at the Bavarian Swabians. Freiburg have now won their last four league games in a row against the Fuggerstädter, scoring a total of 11:1 goals. However, FCA’s 1-0 home win over Borussia Mönchengladbach during the week also saw the knot burst. The Bavarian Swabians can now travel to the south of Baden-Württemberg with corresponding confidence.

In our opinion, it is best to avoid the risky three-way system and instead bet on goals on both sides, also in view of the fact that the SCF have already conceded seven goals in their two league games in 2023. Meanwhile, those who are not only looking for betting recommendations but are also not averse to an interesting betting game.

Freiburg – Statistics & current form

SC Freiburg slipped from second place in the Bundesliga table to sixth in the space of just five days. All in all, the first half of the 2022/23 season was a complete success for the team from Breisgau.

The Black Forest side picked up 31 of a possible 51 points, their best haul in the top flight of German football since the three-point rule was introduced. The only other season with more points (34) was 1994/95.

Unbeaten in eight meetings with Augsburg

Despite this highly positive interim conclusion with the best first half of the season in a long time, feelings are nevertheless mixed. The 0:6 in Wolfsburg and the 1:1 at home against Frankfurt ultimately gave the SCF only one of a possible six points from the two league games in the calendar year 2023.

However, at least the performance of the Black Forest side was back on form after the 0:6 debacle in Wolfsburg on Wednesday evening, which is why the betting on the next home win for the Baden-Württemberger in Freiburg against Augsburg is quite reasonable. After all, none of the last eight league games against the Fuggerstädter has been lost (five wins, three draws).

The best home defence in the Bundesliga

In addition, Sport-Club also have an outstanding home record overall, having gone unbeaten in seven straight Bundesliga home games (five wins, two draws). The Black Forest club is also sixth in the Bundesliga home table.

In the Europa-Park-Stadion at home, Christian Streich’s team, who will now have to do without the suspended key player Nicolas Höfler, also presented itself as extremely strong defensively. The six goals scored at home give the team from Breisgau the best home defence in the Bundesliga. In principle, everything would be in place for the third attempt at the first three goals of the new year.

Augsburg – Statistics & current form

Augsburg showed their strength after the long World Cup break, which saw them lose seven league games in a row (three draws, four defeats), with a 3:4 defeat in Dortmund. The Bavarian Swabians struck back several times, but in the end could not reward themselves with a victory in their eighth league match in a row.

The knot then burst at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach during the week. The 1:0 home win after Mergim Berisha’s golden goal also meant that the Fuggerstädter kept their clean sheet for the first time since September and were able to leave the relegation zone behind them.

Nine of the first 17 league games lost

Just in time for the end of the first half of the season, FCA are where they wanted to be: in a non-relegation place. However, with nine defeats from the first 17 games (five wins, three draws), it goes without saying that there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Enrico Maaßen’s team is all the more eager to improve on that when they face their fearsome opponents from the south of Baden-Württemberg. Most recently, the Bavarian Swabians lost the last four Bundesliga duels in a row with 1:11 goals against the Sport-Club. Consequently, the bookmakers’ betting odds on Freiburg against Augsburg are in favour of the Fuggerstädter.

The fourth best away attack in the Bundesliga

It should be noted, however, that FCA have had an easier time away than at home so far this season. The 1-0 win over Gladbach marked only their second home win of the 2022/23 season, with the Bavarian Swabians’ eight points at home only being undercut by Mainz and Schalke (seven points each) in terms of home weakness.

Away from home, however, the Fuggerstädter already have ten points on their record, having already snatched a three-point win at Leverkusen and Werder Bremen, among others. With a view to the 14 goals already scored away from home, which make FCA the fourth-best away attack in the Bundesliga, it is quite likely that they will at least score at the Europa-Park-Stadion.

Freiburg – Augsburg Direct comparison / H2H balance

Head to head: 18 – 10 – 7

There have been a total of 35 meetings between the two teams so far and with 18 wins, SC Freiburg lead the direct comparison with a clear win rate of 51.4%. The Black Forest side have also won all of their last four Bundesliga duels with the Bavarian Swabians on 11:1 goals and celebrated a 4:0 victory in the first leg in the Fuggerstadt.

Freiburg – Augsburg Tip

For Freiburg against Augsburg, the odds are in favour of the home side, who not only have a strong home record in general, but are also without defeat against the Fuggerstädter in particular with eight meetings in a row (five wins, three draws). Nevertheless, betting on a home win for the Black Forest side is by no means a foregone conclusion. After all, the Bavarian Swabians are travelling with the fourth-best away attack in the Bundesliga and recently refuelled their self-confidence with a 1-0 win against Gladbach.

It makes sense to avoid predicting the outcome of Freiburg vs Augsburg and instead bet on goals on both sides. With seven goals conceded in two league games in the 2023 calendar year, the Black Forest side have already shown themselves to be unusually vulnerable.
