With the Serie A season about to kick off, here is a list of all the fantasy soccer starting goalkeepers along with their respective second-string and third-string counterparts
In a league where games are played every three days, even the role of the goalkeeper has begun to take a different turn from a management perspective. What was once considered the immovable cornerstone of every team is actually a piece that must be managed effectively between matches, in every competition. The search for another top-tier “number one”—see Napoli with Milinkovic-Savic—for their roster is now a priority for each of the twenty Serie A teams, who are increasingly careful not to be caught unprepared in the face of injuries, rest periods, and suspensions of their starting goalkeeper. With the upcoming fantasy football auctions on the horizon, fantasy managers have no choice but to thoroughly study each club’s hierarchy. To avoid making the wrong lineup choices, here is our team-by-team guide.
Atalanta goalkeeper— Starter: Carnesecchi. Backup: Sportiello. Third-string: Rossi – Among last season’s top goalkeepers, Carnesecchi remains a fixture between the Nerazzurri posts. Following Rui Patricio’s departure, his backup will be Sportiello.
Bologna goalkeeper— Starter: Skorupski. Backup: Ravaglia. Third-string: Pessina – Skorupski is the starter for Italiano’s team, but last season Ravaglia was frequently rotated in for the Polish goalkeeper. The pecking order, however, remains clear.
Cagliari Goalkeeper— Starter: Caprile. Backup: Radunovic. Third-string goalkeeper: Ciocci – Signed permanently from Napoli after an excellent second half of the 2024-25 season in the red-and-blue jersey, Caprile will undoubtedly be Cagliari’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2025-26 season as well. Radunovic, returning from his loan spell at Bari, will serve as the backup.
Como Goalkeeper— Starter: Butez. Backup: Vigorito. Third Goalkeeper: Henrique Menke – Signed during the last winter transfer window, Butez immediately established himself as Como’s undisputed starter. For Fabregas, there’s no doubt: he’ll be the number 1.
Cremonese Goalkeeper— Starter: Audero. Backup: Silvestri. Third Goalkeeper: Nava – After a year as backup at Inter and an unhappy first half of the season with Como, Audero has made a positive fresh start with Palermo in Serie B. Now, the starting role at Cremonese awaits him. The experienced Marco Silvestri will serve as the backup. The 1991-born goalkeeper defended the goal for Sampdoria and Empoli last season. The other newcomer, Lapo Nava, born in 2004, will be the third-string goalkeeper.
Fiorentina Goalkeeper— Starter: De Gea. Backup: Martinelli. Third-choice goalkeeper: Lezzerini – His contract extension through 2028 leaves no room for doubt: De Gea will be Fiorentina’s starting goalkeeper through the 2025-26 season. Joining him between the posts as the second-choice goalkeeper will be the young (born in 2006) Martinelli, who will take the spot occupied last season by Terracciano, now at Milan.
Genoa goalkeeper— Starter: Leali. Backup: Siegrist. Third-string goalkeeper: Sommariva – After unseating Gollini last season for the starting role, Leali has proven himself to be a more than reliable goalkeeper and will once again be Genoa’s number one this year. Behind him is Siegrist, who made a strong debut in the 2-2 draw at the end of the 2024-25 season against Napoli.
Inter goalkeeper— Starter: Sommer. Backup: Martinez. Third-choice goalkeeper: Di Gennaro – No doubts regarding Inter: Sommer will once again be the starter. It remains to be seen whether Chivu—compared to Inzaghi’s approach—will give Martinez a few more starts, but the latter will still begin the season behind the Swiss goalkeeper.
Juventus goalkeeper— Starter: Di Gregorio. Backup: Perin. Third-choice goalkeeper: Pinsoglio – At Juventus, the starting goalkeeper is Di Gregorio, who has earned Tudor’s unconditional trust. Perin is a more than capable alternative. The pecking order, however, is clear.
Lazio goalkeeper— Starter: Provedel. Backup: Mandas. Third-choice goalkeeper: Furlanetto – Overtaken in the pecking order by Mandas toward the end of last season, Provedel will try to re-establish himself under Sarri. Sarri, however, has been clear on the matter: “We’ll rotate the starting spot. There won’t be a permanent starter in goal for Lazio this season.” It remains to be seen whether this approach will be maintained over the long term. Meanwhile, in preseason friendlies, Provedel may have regained a slight edge over his teammate.
Lecce goalkeeper— Starter: Falcone. Backup: Fruchtl. Third-string: Samooja – Falcone is among the players indispensable to the Salento club. No Serie A starts so far for the promising Fruchtl (a former “protégé” of Neuer with a past at Bayern), destined once again for the backup role.
Milan goalkeeper— Starter: Maignan. Backup: Terracciano. Third-string: Torriani – The issues from the start of the transfer window are now settled: Maignan will remain at Milan as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. Behind him is Terracciano, who arrived from Fiorentina.
Napoli goalkeeper— Starter: Milinkovic-Savic. Backup: Meret. Third-string: Contini – Another heated situation between the posts involves Napoli. With the signing of Milinkovic-Savic, Meret’s spot no longer seems so secure. It’s an open race: at the moment, the former Torino goalkeeper appears to have a slight edge in the pecking order. This is another situation to monitor closely.
Parma goalkeeper— Starter: Suzuki. Backup: Corvi. Third-string: Rinaldi – Arriving last summer amid widespread skepticism, Zion Suzuki proved in the recently concluded season that he deserves to be Parma’s starter. He will be the first-choice goalkeeper again this year. Corvi, a goalkeeper born in 2001, will serve as the backup.
Pisa goalkeeper— Starter: Semper. Backup: Scuffet. Third-string goalkeeper: Vukovic – Semper retains his spot between the posts, having been a key player in Pisa’s historic promotion from Serie B to Serie A. Behind him, in a race that remains wide open at the moment, is newcomer Scuffet, who will nonetheless try to make his case for a starting spot.
Roma Goalkeeper— Starter: Svilar. Backup: Vasquez. Third Goalkeeper: Gollini – Roma’s starting goalkeeper is the undisputed Svilar, named the best goalkeeper of the 2024-25 season by the Serie A League. Next in the pecking order is Vasquez, who arrived in the summer transfer window from Milan after a season on loan at Empoli where he alternated between great performances and mistakes.
SASSUOLO goalkeeper— Starter: Turati. Backup: Muric. Third goalkeeper: Satalino – After two seasons marked by relegation with Frosinone and Monza, Turati will start anew—for now as the first-choice goalkeeper—at Sassuolo, the club that owns his contract. His backup will be Muric, who arrived in the summer.
Torino goalkeeper— Starter: Israel. Backup: Paleari. Third-choice goalkeeper: Popa – Having arrived from Sporting Lisbon for around four million euros, Israel will be tasked with ensuring Milinkovic-Savic (who moved to Napoli) is not missed in the starting goalkeeper role. Paleari follows him in the pecking order.
Udinese goalkeeper— Starter: Sava. Backup: Okoye. Third-string goalkeeper: Padelli – Things turned out better than expected for Maduka Okoye: only a two-month suspension from the FIGC Federal Court. All charges related to a deliberate booking he received in the 2024 Lazio-Udinese match have been dropped. The suspension will take effect on August 18, meaning the goalkeeper will miss the Coppa Italia opener and six league matches. He will be able to return to the field on October 19 in the away match against Cremonese. Sava will replace him in the first few weeks of Serie A, but once the suspension ends, there will be an open competition for the starting spot.
Verona goalkeeper— Starter: Montipò. Backup: Perilli. Third goalkeeper: Magro – Few doubts in Verona: Montipò will remain the starting goalkeeper, a true mainstay of Zanetti’s starting lineup. Behind him in the pecking order are Perilli and Magro.
