Does Uruguay score at the difficult hurdle in Ecuador?

A perfect start to the group for Uruguay: the Sky Blues picked up three points against Chile on the first matchday of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, bagging three important points in the process. On the second matchday, Uruguay will now face Ecuador away from home. Tuesday’s opponents are by no means to be underestimated – something that Argentina has already felt recently.

Ecuador lost the match against the reigning world champions by a narrow margin of 0:1. The Ecuadorians are now out to make amends at home. If they win, betting odds of up to 1.97 will be paid out for an Ecuador vs. Uruguay bet on the host nation.

Since October 2009, the Ecuadorian national team has won each of its last three home matches against Uruguay. It is therefore not at all surprising that “La Tri” will approach the upcoming match as favorites as well.

Uruguay, however, are by no means to be underestimated after their comfortable win against Chile. The Sky Blues were already leading the match against Chile 2-0 before the second half. If the momentum is carried over, the Uruguayans can also be expected to win against Tuesday’s opponents. Our Ecuador vs. Uruguay prediction aims at that.

Ecuador – statistics & current form

Ecuador started the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with a deduction of three points, and the defeat against the Argentine national team in the group opener of the World Cup qualifiers was all the more serious. Especially since “La Tri” had realistic chances to score in the match against the reigning world champions.

It took a lone move from Messi to decide the match. Before that, it was a match full of two fights in which Ecuador largely kept the concentrated offense of the Argentine favorites in check. On the offensive side, however, the efforts were limited. It remains to be seen how Ecuador will perform against Uruguay at home.

If the H2H is anything to go by, the home advantage will come in handy for La Tri. The Ecuadorians have won each of their last three home games against Uruguay since October 2009. Ecuador scored as many as seven goals in those games. The Ecuadorian national team scored four of those seven goals in their last home match (4-2) as part of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Haven’t lost a home game since June 2021

Not lost an international match in front of a home crowd since almost two years ago. “La Tri” is thus unbeaten for ten home matches in a row. Ecuador even won five of those ten matches. In addition, the Ecuadorian national team even remained unbeaten in home matches against top teams such as Brazil (1-1) and Argentina (1-1).

If the record is extended with a win against “La Celeste”, betting odds of up to 1.97 for an Ecuador vs. Uruguay tip on the hosts beckon.

National coach Félix Sánchez is expected to make no changes to his starting eleven for the match against the Uruguayans. His team made a positive impression against Argentina. The defensive bulwark was particularly convincing with its aggressive approach.

Predicted lineup of Ecuador:

Galindez; Torres, Arboleda, Pacho, Hurtado; Cifuentes, Gruezo, Caicedo, Estupinan; Rodriguez, Valencia

Uruguay – statistics & current form

Uruguay started their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a comfortable win over Chile. The Sky Blues rewarded themselves with a 2-0 half-time lead before the break. After a goal by de la Cruz in the 38th minute of the match, teammate Valverde increased the lead to 2:0. In the following second half, Uruguay managed the comfortable halftime lead.

Now “La Celeste” is aiming for the next points, which will also allow them to fine-tune their H2H against the Ecuadorians. In the last three World Cup qualifiers, Uruguay has not won a single away game against Ecuador. It therefore remains to be seen how “La Celeste” will present itself this time at the difficult hurdle in Quito.

In the last World Cup qualifier, Uruguay picked up just three wins in nine away matches in the entire group stage of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. In those nine matches, the Sky Blues scored a total of 15 times. Uruguay, on the other hand, scored ten goals – an average of 2.78 goals per away match involving Uruguay.

The Himmelblauen offense has warmed up

A high-scoring encounter cannot be ruled out this time either. In the last three international matches of the Himmelblauen the mark of three goals was cracked. It’s quite possible that a bet on at least three goals in the match will pay off against Ecuador as well. Enough offensive power is available on both sides.

Although the Uruguayans are missing two experienced attacking stars in Suarez and Cavani, the attack of “La Celeste” still has enough quality to score at least one goal against an opponent like Ecuador. In the match against Chile, de la Cruz in particular made a positive impression.

The CA River Plate midfielder was involved in all three of the Sky Blues’ goals. De la Cruz even scored two of those three goals and will therefore also be set against the Ecuadorians. Big changes compared to the last starting eleven are not expected anyway.

Predicted lineup of Uruguay:
Rochet; Nandez; Caceres, Vina, Piquerez; Valverde, Ugarte, De la Cruz; Pellistri, Nunez, Araujo

Ecuador – Uruguay Direct comparison / H2H balance

In the last 48 meetings between these two nations, Uruguay leads the H2H against Ecuador with a record of 31-10-7. In those 48 matches, an average of 3.29 goals per match has been scored. Therefore, it would not be far-fetched at all to predict Over 2.5 goals in the match in the upcoming international match between Ecuador vs Uruguay as well.

Uruguay have won three of their last four matches. Only in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers did the Uruguayan national team lose out away from home, losing the match to Ecuador 4-2. It was the third away defeat in a row for the Ecuadorians.

Ecuador – Uruguay Tip

Uruguay made a commanding group start in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Even without star players like Cavani and Suarez, “La Celeste” flexed their offensive muscles and continued their high-flying performance from the last international break. The Himmelblauen swept Chile off the pitch with a 3:1 win.

In the second group match, the Uruguayan national team now hosts Ecuador. An opponent with whom Uruguay has not won an away game since October 2009. Considering how strong the Uruguayans have been in recent internationals, it’s not impossible that this negative streak will now come to an end.

We see value in the high betting odds on a win for the Sky Blues and by no means rule out a surprise. Our Ecuador vs Uruguay tip targets the visitors at odds of 4.50. For this, we choose a moderate stake of three units.
