The Greens dominated Group A
Palmeiras, the Brazilian Serie A club, secured their place in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup by finishing top of Group A. The Green-and-Whites finished with five points, remaining unbeaten with one win and two draws, scoring four goals and conceding two. They finished ahead of Inter Miami, who came second on goal difference, Porto, and Al Ahly, who finished with two points. In their final group game, Abel Ferreira’s men came from two goals down to draw 2-2, a result that dashed Inter Miami’s hopes of winning the group.
The decisive victory came on the second matchday against Al Ahly: 2-0 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, with an own goal by Abou Ali early in the second half and Lopez doubling the lead in the 60th minute. Palmeiras did not shine, but they did not need to: they managed the group with authority and deserve first place in a balanced group. With four goals scored and two conceded in three games, there are good reasons to expect goals from both teams in Saturday’s match.

The Lone Star ahead of the pack
Botafogo earned more points in Group B than any team in Group A, but it wasn’t enough to finish in first place. The Lone Star finished with six points from three games, thanks to two wins, three goals scored, and two conceded. Level on points with PSG—the group winners and last season’s Champions League winners—they missed out on top spot only on goal difference, with the Parisians scoring four more goals. The real coup came in the second game, with a 1-0 win over PSG in front of over 53,000 spectators at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
