Copa-Cracher: Hot Sevilla Derby in the Spanish Cup

The last 16 of the Spanish Cup is on this weekend – at least five of the eight games will be played on Saturday and Sunday. The four clubs, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico and Athletic Bilbao, who were in Saudi Arabia for the Supercopa de España, the Super Cup played in Final Four tournament mode, are not in cup action until next week during the week.

Of the five Copa matches this weekend, one derby is by far the most resounding: for it is the hot-blooded Derbi Sevillano between Betis and Sevilla FC. The Sevilla city derby is scheduled for Saturday, 15 January, at 21:30.

There are no favourites in this match, but the home team has the slight edge in the Betis vs Sevilla clash. The bet on the home win is slightly better than the bet on the visitors – and that is a little surprising.

Betis Sevilla – Statistics & current form

If it were a league clash, Betis, third in the table, would host Sevilla FC, second in the table – that alone makes it clear what an explosive top match is on the agenda in the round of 16.

The fact that the Beticos are slight favourites in this city derby is, of course, primarily due to the home advantage. Three-way betting odds of 2.50 on Betis Sevilla vs. Sevilla are available on a home win. That is interesting, but of course also risky. Because anything can happen in a derby, even more so of course in a cup match.

Betis have only won five of their ten home games at the Benito Villamarin

Furthermore, Betis are not even as strong at home in La Liga as you might expect from a third-placed team in the table. Five of the ten home games were won – but the five other games were not (balance: 5 wins, 2 draws, 3 defeats). In addition, Betis have been waiting for a win in La Liga for three games, losing two of them – so the Verdiblancos’ form is not good at all at the moment.

The direct duel against Sevilla was also lost in the league – at the same place. Betis lost 2-0 at home to their city neighbours at the Benito Villamarin on matchday 13.

Predicted line-up of Betis Sevilla:
Silva – Bellerin, Gonzalez, Bartra, Moreno – Carvalho, Rodriguez, Canales, Fekir, Tello, Iglesias

Sevilla – Statistics & current form

The current form of Sevilla FC is completely different. Coach Julen Lopetegui’s team has won five games in a row in La Liga – four of them even by zero! The secret of the Andalusians’ success is their superb defence: Sevilla have only conceded 13 goals in 20 games in La Liga so far, making them the best defensive team in the Spanish top flight.

In addition, Sevilla FC is the second best away team in the Primera Division behind league leader Real Madrid (record: 5 wins, 3 draws, 2 defeats). Astonishingly, they have only conceded five goals in ten away games.

Will Sevilla keep a clean sheet at Betis again?

Whoever thinks the visitors will win by nil in view of this defensive strength will find a 4.40 at Bwin on this tip before Betis Sevilla vs. Sevilla.

The strong defence, the strong form and the strong table position in La Liga – Sevilla have ten points more than Betis on their account – in our opinion lead to the fact that not the home side but rather the guests should be seen as slight favourites. But the fact that the betting companies see this differently also has an advantage: In the city derby Betis Sevilla vs. Sevilla, the odds on the victory of Julen Lopetegui’s team are extremely good with an average of 2.80.

Predicted line-up of Sevilla:
Dmitrovic – Montiel, Koundé, Carlos, Acuña – Fernando, Jordan, Rakitic – Ocampos, Mir, Gomez

Betis Sevilla – Sevilla Direct Comparison / H2H Record

The recent derby record is also rather less in favour of Betis, as Sevilla FC are unbeaten in six derbies and have won five of the last six city duels.

In La Liga, as mentioned, there was a 2-0 away win at Betis in November, and last season they drew 1-1 at the same venue – Betis’ only point against Sevilla during this period.

The cup record does not look any better for Betis: They have met four times in the Copa del Rey so far, with Betis failing to win a single match – or even score a goal (0:4, 0:2, 0:1, 0:0).

Betis Sevilla – Sevilla tip

At the outset, of course, it’s worth reiterating: A city derby of the great arch-rivals as a cup match on top of that – a starting position can hardly be much tighter in advance, even more so when it’s Betis against Sevilla FC, who are each playing a really strong season in La Liga and are neighbours in the table here.

You could, in good conscience, talk in advance of a coin toss game where anything is possible. But Sevilla FC’s form and defensive strength, as well as their recent outstanding record in direct duels, can be good reasons to bet on the visitors’ success. The (surprisingly) high odds in particular lead us to make a riskier bet, but one that could ultimately be worthwhile. Our prediction for Betis Sevilla against Sevilla FC is: Sevilla FC will win and more than 1.5 goals will be scored
