Are the Chiefs too big for the Jets?
The Kansas City Chiefs are the guests of the New York Jets on Sunday night. Beforehand, the roles are clearly distributed, because while the reigning champion could win the last two games, the home side lost the last two games. For this reason, the bookmakers’ betting odds between the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs are clearly in favour of a win for the away team.
New York is facing difficult weeks and possibly even a difficult season. The Jets lost the last two games, have to do without Aaron Rodgers for a few more weeks and don’t seem to be able to close the gap. It would therefore be no surprise if Robert Saleh’s team ends up missing the playoffs. For this reason, the odds are clearly against a home win between the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs.
We recommend betting on a Travis Kelce touchdown between the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs. The tight end of the visitors missed the match against the Detroit Lions due to an injury and was sorely missed. In the following games, the number 87 was back in the game and scored a touchdown each time. He is also Mahomes’ favourite target player and should therefore have a good chance of scoring a touchdown against the Jets. The best odds for this bet are available at Bet365.
Kickoff for this AFC match is at 02:20 on Monday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. The match can be watched live and in full on DAZN.
New York Jets – Statistics & current form
New York won in overtime against the Buffalo Bills to open the season and beat one of the top teams in the NFL. At the same time, however, the Jets lost their starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The loss of the superstar quickly made itself felt, as the following two games against the Dallas Cowboys and the New England Patriots were lost.
Now the question is whether the home side will go through the season with Zach Wilson or sign a new quarterback. In the game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the youngster will definitely still be on the field, because there is currently no other option.
Quarterback problem
Aaron Rodgers was the clear number one at the beginning of the season and got seriously injured on the first day of the game. This forced Robert Saleh to let young quarterback Zach Wilson play. With only 467 passing yards, a pass rate of only 52.4% and only two touchdown passes, the youngster is currently the weakest player at his position. In the meantime, the club is considering signing Colin Kaepernick, who has offered himself in a letter.
Second Year
Breece Hall is absolutely convincing at the start of only his second NFL season and is currently even outshining new signing Dalvin Cook. The running back has already amassed 154 rushing yards and ranks 22nd in the league, so the 22-year-old offensive player could have his big breakthrough this year. With only 91.3 rushing yards per game, the Jets are still one of the weaker teams in the league.
Weak Offense
The Jets are currently the weakest offence in the National Football League with only 14.0 points per game. Robert Saleh’s team has especially big problems in the passing game, averaging only 133.7 passing yards. One of the few bright spots in New York’s O-line is clearly Garrett Wilson. The wide receiver has already scored two touchdowns and caught passes for 165 yards in space.
Solid defence
In the first three games this season, the Jets have allowed just 20.3 points per game, so they’ve been very respectable overall. Still, New York’s D-line is allowing opponents to gain quite a bit of space, with 351.3 yards per game. Robert Saleh’s team has its difficulties especially against the running game. Fortunately, however, that is not the Chiefs’ main discipline.
Key players of the New York Jets:
- QB: zach Wilson
- RB: Breece Hall
- WR: Garrett Wilson
- S: Jordan Whitehead
- K: Greg Zuerlein
Kansas City Chiefs – Statistics & current form
Kansas City lost surprisingly at the beginning of the season with 20:21 against the Detroit Lions and had a small false start. However, the Chiefs went on to win against the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Chicago Bears, so that the opening defeat was quickly forgotten.
However, the last two opponents are not real yardsticks, so the visitors have not yet really been able to show whether they can match their excellent performance in the previous season. The goal is still the same, however, and anything less than defending the title would be a disappointment for Patrick Mahomes’ team
Most Valuable Player
Patrick Mahomes was named MVP for the second time in his career last season and was also named Super Bowl MVP. The quarterback has also been AFC Champion three times and won the Super Bowl twice. In the first three games of the new season, the No. 15 Chiefs threw seven touchdown passes and amassed a total of 803 passing yards.
Gap upside
The Chiefs currently have room for improvement in the running game, as with 114.7 rushing yards per game, there are still some NFL teams that are significantly better. It’s no wonder that Isiah Pacheco is only 20th in the league with 155 rushing yards. The best running backs in the league are already at over 300 yards, well ahead of Kansas City’s running back.
Hard to read
The Chiefs have a plethora of pass receivers who get their balls from Mahomes play after play. This makes it enormously difficult to read and thus stop Kansas City’s O-line. The number one playmaker, however, is not a wide receiver, as it is on most teams in the National Football League. Travis Kelce is the player Pat looks for and finds most often. The tight end scored two touchdowns in two games and is probably the best player at his position.
Top Defense
Averaging just 13.3 points per game, the Chiefs are one of the best defenses in the NFL. In addition, Kansas City’s D-line looked very focused against both the run game and the passing game. Thus, there is no real weak spot in Andy Reid’s team so far, which is why we think the New York Jets have very little chance of winning.
Kansas City Chiefs key players:
- QB: Patrick Mahomes
- RB: Isiah Pacheco
- WR: Justin Watson
- TE: Travis Kelce
- K: Harrison Butker
New York Jets – Kansas City Chiefs Direct Comparison / H2H Balance
The direct comparison between the two teams goes somewhat surprisingly to the underdog from New York. The Jets won 14 duels against Kansas City, while the visitors only picked up ten victories. The last time the two teams met was in November 2020, almost three years ago. Back then, the Chiefs won clearly with 35:9, winning each of the four quarters. For this reason, our prediction between the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs clearly goes in the direction of the favourite.
New York Jets – Kansas City Chiefs Tip
We bet on a win for the visitors between the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs with a handicap of -6.5. It is a game of opposites and should therefore also end with a clear result. The home side is out of form, playing without their starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers and last won against KC in 2017. On the other side are the reigning champions, who travel to New York with two wins in a row. In our estimation, a similar result as in the last duel could repeat itself.
Alternatively, we recommend odds of under 44.5 points between the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs. This is primarily due to the home side’s weak offence, which averages just 14 points. In addition, the visitors’ defence is very solid, so it would be no wonder if the hosts even stayed under the 10-point mark.
