Will Hanfmann take out the next Chilean?

Actually, the European Open in Hamburg is where the German tennis cracks should be cavorting at the moment. However, some have decided to compete in a Challenger tournament in Indianapolis as preparation for the US Open and Yannick Hanfmann is taking a completely different route. The Karlsruhe native will be playing in the Swiss Open in Gstaad this week, where he played his first of two ATP finals in 2017.

The 30-year-old has fought his way through the qualifying rounds and has already made it through the first round. On Thursday, Chile’s Nicolas Jarry will be another qualifier. In the direct duel, it is already a question of reaching the quarter-finals, which would be a great success for both players. Both players should tend to be on about the same level.

The bookmakers tested, however, are of the opinion that the Chilean has the slightly better prospects of making it to the next round. However, there is not a big gap between the quotes on a win for one or the other and therefore we can imagine that one could be right with a prediction of more than 2.5 sets in the match between Nicolas Jarry and Yannick Hanfmann.

The Karlsruhe player might even have the slightly better prospects, although you always have to keep an eye on the South Americans, especially on clay. Yannick Hanfmann, however, has already knocked a Chilean out of the tournament with Cristian Clarin, who is clearly the stronger player. Therefore, we are inclined to place a bet between Nicolas Jarry and Yannick Hanfmann on a victory for the German.

Nicolas Jarry – Statistics & current form

Current world ranking: 118
Seeded position: unseeded

Nicolas Jarry has managed one tournament win in his career on the ATP Tour. In 2019, he won in Bastad, Sweden, which washed the Chilean up to 38th in the rankings. To date, it has been the 26-year-old’s carrier high. Perhaps things could be a lot better in the rankings if there were more ATP tournaments in South America.

Stronger in South America

The Chilean has won all his Challenger matches – and that is the stage on which Nicolas Jarry is currently most active – on his own continent. When he goes to Europe or even to the hard courts in North America, not much happens. Therefore, we would not necessarily play the odds on a Chilean success in the match between Nicolas Jarry and Yannick Hanfmann.

In Gstaad, however, the Chilean has performed very well, at least up to this point. In the qualifiers, he first beat the Italian Flavio Cobolli and then the Czech Vit Kopriva. In both matches, Nicolas Jarry did not lose a set. Therefore, the 26-year-old earned his slot in the main draw.

In the first round, however, he was more of an outsider against Brazilian Thiago Monteiro. In an absolute marathon match, the Chilean finally prevailed in 3:11 hours and won 6:7, 7:6 and 7:6. Perhaps one should therefore consider placing a bet on at least one tiebreak in the match on Thursday as well.

Yannick Hanfmann – Statistics & current form

Current world ranking: 152
Position in the seedings: unseeded

To be honest, it has to be said that Yannick Hanfmann has not managed the big breakthrough in his career. A good year ago, he was ranked 92 in the top 100 in the world rankings, but it will probably not go much further up. At the moment, he is only ranked 152nd, which means that every match he wins on the ATP Tour can be seen as a success.

Best time of the year

The Karlsruhe native also usually competes in Challengers and plays relatively often in the Bundesliga on the side. So far it has not been a good year for the German, who is probably currently going through his best phase, because no matter where he has played this year, he has never managed three wins in a row. So for 2022, what he is currently doing in Gstaad is a novelty.

However, the 30-year-old has already had to stretch himself twice in qualifying. He defeated Filip Misolic from Austria in three sets after more than two hours, and it wasn’t any easier afterwards against Zizou Bergs from Belgium, when the German also needed three sets and more than two hours to leave the court as the winner.

Obviously, the two matches he won gave the German a boost, because in the first main round he had to deal with Chile’s Cristian Garin, who can be found at position 70 in the ATP ranking and was ranked sixth in the seedings in Gstaad. Nevertheless, this time only one and a half hours were enough for Yannick Hanfmann to prevail 6:3 and 6:4.

Nicolas Jarry – Yannick Hanfmann Direct comparison / H2H balance

Yannick Hanfmann has just gained experience again against a Chilean tennis player in the first round. However, Cristian Garin’s style of play cannot be transferred 1:1 to a match against Nicolas Jarry. There is no direct comparison against the 26-year-old Chilean so far, because both will play each other for the first time on Thursday in Gstaad.

Nicolas Jarry – Yannick Hanfmann Tip

The Swiss Open in Gstaad is something of a favourite tournament for Yannick Hanfmann, who reached his first of two finals on the ATP Tour there in 2017. At the time, by the way, he also entered as a qualifier. Perhaps that is a good omen for this week’s tournament. After the German had some problems in the qualifying round, he knew how to improve in the first main round.

His success over Chile’s Cristian Garin was not necessarily to be expected. Winning the match in two clear sets should have given the German from Karlsruhe an additional boost.

We can imagine that it will be a long match on Thursday. The Chilean was on court for over three hours in the first round and played three tiebreaks. We think it is quite conceivable that three sets will be necessary in this match as well, but we have decided to play the betting odds on an easy win for the German between Nicolas Jarry and Yannick Hanfmann.
