How will Lys fare in her Wimbledon debut?
The great summer of tennis enters the next round. The most famous and prestigious tournament in the world will be played on Church Road in the London district of Wimbledon. This year, twelve German athletes will be taking part once again. One of them will be making her debut at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. In our Eva Lys vs Clara Burel betting tip, we take a look at whether the German will make a name for herself in the main draw after successfully qualifying
On the hallowed turf of Wimbledon in particular, it’s not enough to simply focus on your position in the WTA rankings. The grass season is short and yet there are some specialists who deliver their best performances on grass. Sabine Lisicki, for example, was one such candidate. The two women, who meet in the first round, have not shown any particular affinity for grass courts so far.
However, while the 22-year-old German is at least more comfortable on faster surfaces, her French opponent’s preference seems to be shifting more and more towards clay courts. We can therefore certainly imagine predicting that the young player from Hamburg will progress in the match between Eva Lys and Clara Burel
This is the German’s first ever match in the Wimbledon main draw. She will have to make sure she gets over her nerves early on. However, the Frenchwoman is not much more experienced on Church Road. This first round is only her fourth singles match at Wimbledon
Eva Lys – statistics & current form
Current world ranking: 130
Position in the seeding list: unseeded
The 22-year-old from Hamburg, who came to the Hanseatic city from Kiev as a two-year-old, is playing in London for the third time this year. In 2022, she was knocked out in the first qualifying round and last year she made it through to the second round. Even now, without having played a single ball in the main draw, this is her best tournament to date at Wimbledon
After Paris now also in the main draw at Wimbledon
The bottom line is that Eva Lys has already traveled to England in good form. At the end of May, she played her way into the main draw at the French Open in Paris after qualifying, only to be eliminated in the first round. The 22-year-old then reached the quarter-finals at the WTA tournament in Bari. Only then will she focus on the grass court season
In Hertogenbosch, Eva Lys failed in the second qualifying round and so went to Wimbledon with just two matches on grass. Apparently, however, this was the perfect preparation, because with three wins in Roehampton, where the tickets for Wimbledon are awarded, the Hamburg native successfully completed the qualifying round. Clear two-set victories against Raluca Serban from Romania and the Frenchwoman and Selena Janicijevic were enough.
In the decisive match, the German had to take to the court against Amanda Anisimova from the USA. This time the 22-year-old had to stretch herself more, but after 1:44 hours she came out on top 4:6, 6:3 and 6:4. With four wins from her last five matches, the Hamburg native has put together a good run and her three successes in qualifying prompt us to take a closer look at the odds on the underdog to win between Eva Lys and Clara Burel
Clara Burel – Statistics & current form
Current world ranking position: 43
Position in the seeding list: unseeded
Although Clara Burel is only one year older than her German opponent, she is already several steps ahead in her career. She is currently in the top 50 of the world rankings for the first time and thus at her career high. As a junior, she reached the finals of the French Open and the US Open. Wimbledon wasn’t her best tournament back then and that hasn’t changed to this day
Series of failures for Clara Burel
At least the Frenchwoman has three matches in the main draw at Church Road. However, with 1:2 victories, her record still has a lot of room for improvement. In general, it has to be said that 43rd place in the WTA rankings is a great snapshot, but that the leap to the top of the world rankings is still a long way off. This assertion can currently be backed up very impressively.
In recent weeks, the 23-year-old has hardly been able to put anything together. Her last victory came on May 22, in the round of 16 on clay in Strasbourg. The Frenchwoman then suffered five defeats in a row. First, she temporarily ended the clay court season with defeats in the quarter-finals of Strasbourg and in the first round of the French Open.
She then began her preparations for Wimbledon, albeit also unsuccessfully. In Nottingham, Birmingham and most recently in Bad Homburg, the Frenchwoman never made it past the first round. If it doesn’t work out in Wimbledon either, there is at least one consolation, because firstly she will return to clay and secondly Clara Burel can then prepare for the Olympic Games in Paris, for which she has already safely qualified
Eva Lys – Clara Burel head-to-head comparison / H2H record
Eva Lys and Clara Burel haven’t been on the WTA Tour together for very long. The German in particular still has to play a lot of Challenger tournaments. However, as both women are of a similar age, they have come a long way together, having played together on court a total of three times.
In a direct comparison, the German is ahead with 2:1 victories. In 2022, Eva Lys won an ITF tournament in Wiesbaden on clay in two sets. It was closer last year in Contrexville, when the Hamburg native needed three sets to win the match. Their last encounter this year was in the qualifying round in Dubai, when the Frenchwoman came out on top 6:2 and 6:1
Eva Lys – Clara Burel tip
Clara Burel is not in good form at the moment. Not only has the Frenchwoman recently suffered five defeats in a row. She obviously wanted to give it a go at Wimbledon and has entered three tournaments to prepare. However, she was knocked out in the first round in Nottingham, Birmingham and Bad Homburg and is therefore still waiting for her first grass court win of the season.
At least in this respect, things are looking much better for the German. There was one win in Hertogenbosch and then there are the three successful matches in the qualifying round in Roehampton. The 22-year-old from Hamburg is now playing at Church Road for the first time and with an Oddset bonus, we can imagine placing a bet on a win for the qualifier between Eva Lys and Clara Burel
However, we think that it might not be as clear-cut as the form of the two ladies suggests. In general, you can certainly expect that this match will not be decided in two sets. A bet on a 2:1 win for the Germans could be a good one. In the end, however, we decide to play the odds between Eva Lys and Clara Burel on an easy win for the Hamburg player
