Will Medvedev live up to the role of favourite?

Just like last year, Daniil Medvedev and Roberto Bautista Agut will face each other in the quarter-finals of the Terra Wortmann Open! What is the betting pool’s tip for the match in Halle? In the last edition of the tournament, the Russian won quite clearly in two sets with 6:2 and 6:4.

The winner of the 2020 ATP Finals even managed to reach the final, where Medvedev was defeated by Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz. His Spanish opponent, on the other hand, was probably already satisfied with reaching the quarter-finals, as he had to retire in the first round the previous year.

For the next edition of Daniil Medvedev against Roberto Bautista Agut, the odds once again assign the Russian the role of favourite.

Daniil Medvedev – Statistics & current form

The number 3 in the world rankings not only reached the final in Halle last year on grass, but also reached the final at the tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, which also takes place on this surface. However, the professional from Moscow also had to admit defeat.

As a result of the two defeats, Medvedev, who topped the world rankings for 16 weeks in 2022, still has only one victory in an ATP grass court tournament. The success came in Mallorca in 2021, but he has already been seeded No. 1 once at the current edition of the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle.

So far, he has lived up to the praise, at least in terms of results: the right-hander, coached by Gilles Cervara, first beat the US American Giron 2-0 and then eliminated the Serb Djere in three sets.

However, the latest victory did not come easily and took more than two hours of play. Medvedev committed seven double faults and only 19 of his 33 attacks at the net led to a point win.

He also disappointed last week when he had to bow out of the Libema Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch after his first appearance and was thus unable to repeat last year’s run to the final.

Will the match go to three sets again?

With this in mind, the match between Daniil Medvedev and Roberto Bautista Agut offers additional betting odds on a three-set victory for the Russian. While he continues to play the role of favourite, an outright 2-0 is not in the cards given his shaky performances on grass so far this season.

Roberto Bautista Agut – Statistics & current form

Roberto Bautista Agut, like his opponent, has only won one grass court tournament in his career. This was also a very long time ago. The triumph came nine years ago at the then competition in ‘s-Hertogenbosch against the German Benjamin Becker, who has already ended his career since 2017.

In 2023, the professional from Castellón de la Plana reached only one final. This was the final of the ATP tournament in Adelaide at the beginning of this year. However, the 35-year-old also feels comfortable on grass, as he proved last year when he reached the final in Mallorca.

Furthermore, the final was only lost very narrowly in three sets and by a lost tiebreak in the last round against the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. His grass court expertise can also be seen in several respectable performances at Wimbledon.

The world number 23, for example, reached the semi-finals in 2019, where he took at least one set from eventual winner Novak Djokovic. Furthermore, reaching the semifinals represents his greatest success at a Grand Slam tournament to date.

Spanish player is in a strong form

Bautista Agut, who played football for Villarreal until he was 14, has also been very solid at the current Terra Wortmann Open. He won both his matches against the Italian Vavassori and the US-American Nakashima in two sets and especially his serve-and-volley game was successful.

In the two duels, he finished more than 80 per cent of his attacks at the net victoriously! In view of this, the prediction and odds on a victory for Daniil Medvedev in the duel between him and Roberto Bautista Agut, including a handicap of + 3.5 games, are also worth considering.

Daniil Medvedev – Roberto Bautista Agut Direct comparison / H2H-balance

Daniil Medvedev and Roberto Bautista Agut last faced each other last October. At that time, the Bulgarian won very clearly in the quarter-finals of the tournament in Astana with two 6:1 victories.

Before that, the two players also met on grass last year. As mentioned, once in Halle with a 2:0 win by Medvedev and then on Mallorca, where again the Iberian grabbed a 2:0 victory. The overall balance is also 4:2 in favour of the Spaniard.

Daniil Medvedev – Roberto Bautista Agut Tip

Medvedev is already very successful again in 2023 with five tournament wins. Among other things, he won at the Rome Masters about a month ago, but the results on grass are still lacking.

The 2021 US Open winner, only the third Russian player to win a Grand Slam tournament after Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin, was knocked out of the Libema Open last week in his opening match against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

He had triumphed in the competition the previous year. In addition, he had to struggle to beat Djere from Serbia in the last round – an opponent who is ranked more than 60 places lower in the world ranking list.

For the quarter-final of the Terra Wortmann Open 2023 between Daniil Medvedev and Roberto Bautista Agut, the tip is therefore aiming for at least a tiebreak. This is also supported by the fact that the Spaniard lost to Medvedev in Halle last year, but then defeated him on grass in Mallorca.

In addition, he is very stable at the Terra Wortmann Open 2023 and convinces with efficient service games. In his two matches so far at the tournament in Halle, Bautista Agut has only conceded one opponent’s break point.
