Will the Wolves get back on track?
With four wins from their first four league games, VfL Wolfsburg got off to a perfect start to the 2021/22 season. However, the Wolves went without another win in their subsequent four competitive gamesand also suffered their first defeat in league action last Saturday when they lost 3-1 at Hoffenheim.
However, the Lower Saxons still occupy third place in the table, while the visitors from North Rhine-Westphalia are currently only eleventh with only seven of 18 possible points. Accordingly, in the run-up to the match between Wolfsburg and Gladbach, the odds are swinging in favour of the home side.
The Foals are also one of the Wolves’ favourite opponents at the Volkswagen Arena. VfL have already won 22 games against Borussia – more than against any other Bundesliga team. Of the 21 home games in the Bundesliga alone, in 15 cases the full three points stayed with the Lower Saxons
Germany Wolfsburg – Statistics & current form
This summer, VfL Wolfsburg ended up where Borussia Mönchengladbach would have liked to have ended up as Champions League participants: in the top four of the Bundesliga. In doing so, the Lower Saxons returned to the Champions League after six years, from which they had so impressively bowed out in the spring of 2016 with a 2-0 home victory over Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
In the first two group matches in the top flight, however, the Wolves lacked a bit of luck. First of all, VfL could not get beyond a goalless draw in Lille, before a disputed penalty shortly before the end against Sevilla meant that the points were once again shared.
No win in last four competitive games
Nevertheless, the squad that was taken over by Mark van Bommel this summer does not have too much to complain about overall. In the Bundesliga, after all, after six matchdays, a place among the top four is once again on record.
The Lower Saxons have so far picked up 13 out of a possible 18 points and currently occupy third place, although they have recently been in a bit of a mess after a perfect start to the season, with only one point out of a possible six from their last two league games. In total, they have now gone four games in a row without a win.
The third best defence in the Bundesliga
Despite this, VfL go into the home game against the Foals favoured.
In addition, they have a very strong defence that has only conceded five goals in six league games. Only Mainz (three) and Freiburg (four) have been more stable than Marc van Bommel’s team, which could also take the decision at any time from a set piece. Half of VfL’s goals in the league have come from balls that have been saved.
Predicted Wolfsburg line-up:
Casteels – Roussillon – Brooks – Lacroix – Mbabu – Arnold – Guilavogui – Nmecha – Waldschmidt – Baku – Weghorst

Germany Gladbach – Statistics & current form
Borussia Mönchengladbach only finished eighth in the final table this summer. Under outgoing coach Marco Rose, the Foals not only failed to qualify for the Champions League again, but also failed to secure a place in the Europa League or Conference League.
Under the new coach Adi Hütter, the full focus of the men from the Lower Rhine is therefore on the Bundesliga, in which there was at least a respectable success last weekend. Gladbach beat BVB 1:0
Away still without a point in league play
Never the less, only the second three-pointer of the 2021/22 season cannot hide the problems of the Foals.
Factually, Borussia have lost three of their last five league gamesand have been able to score at home without exception.
Away, on the other hand, the men from the Lower Rhine still have zero points on their account with 1:7 goals, having already lost their first three away games in the past season. Now, for the first time since the 2006/07 season, which ended in relegation, they could suffer four away defeats to start the season again.
The fifth weakest offence in the Bundesliga
With a view to the repeatedly mentioned away record of the Wolves (only two victories from 21 Bundesliga matches), betting on a three-goal win for the Foals in Wolfsburg against Gladbach is very ill-fated.
After all, the players from the Lower Rhine are still struggling to score goals. The serial champions of the 1970s have only scored six goals in the current competition. This makes Hütter’s team the fifth-worst offensive team in the Bundesliga. All the more unfavourable is the fact that Marcus Thuram, an important attacker, is currently missing with a torn inner ligament.
Predicted line-up of Gladbach:
Sommer – Jantschke – Elvedi – Ginter – Netz – Koné – Zakaria – Scally – Stindl – Hofmann – Embolo
Last games played by Gladbach:
Wolfsburg – Gladbach Direct comparison / H2H-Balance
Head to head: 22 – 8 – 13
There have been a total of 43 meetings between the two teams so far and in 22 wins, 51.2% of all duels have gone to VfL Wolfsburg, who have most recently gone unbeaten in 16 consecutive home games in the Bundesliga against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Germany Wolfsburg – Gladbach Germany Tip
When it comes to Wolfsburg against Gladbach, the prediction is to a certain extent also shaped by the one-sided “head to head” record. However, it is also much more important that the Foals have felt very uncomfortable on foreign grounds so far, are still without a point away from home and have only scored one goal away from home. On the other hand, the Wolves are strong at home and have the third-best defence in the Bundesliga
Betting on a home win for the Wolves, who have not lost any of their last 16 league home games against Borussia Mönchengladbach
, is correspondingly favourable.
