Will there be plenty of goals on the Weser again?

It has been clear since Thursday evening that Eintracht Frankfurt will continue to be represented in European football in spring 2024. The Hessians celebrated a lackluster 1:0 victory in Helsinki and can no longer be displaced from one of the top two places two matchdays before the end of the group stage. The narrow victory, which could definitely have been higher if they had made better use of their chances, extended their unbeaten run to seven competitive matches in a row

The SGE squad will therefore travel to the Weser at the weekend with an extremely broad chest, where a number of teams have already had their problems this season. Coach Ole Werner’s team have already bagged three home wins, which is why the team in twelfth place in the table have justified hopes of bringing the Eagles to their knees in their own stadium. The bookmakers are not quite so confident in this regard and are offering higher odds for a home win between Werder Bremen and Frankfurt. The probability of victory for the hosts is estimated at a meagre 31%

If we take the last direct duel in the Weser Stadium as a benchmark, the fans in attendance can look forward to a spectacle. The Black & Whites won 4:3 at the Osterdeich in August last year, although three of the four Eintracht goalscorers from back then are no longer under contract in the Main metropolis. However, as the development curve at the 2022 Europa League winners, who were almost completely overhauled in the summer, continues to point steeply upwards, a prediction of an away win in the Werder Bremen v Frankfurt clash on Sunday afternoon could once again come true

Werder Bremen – Statistics & current form

SV Werder Bremen are certainly one of those clubs in the Bundesliga that fulfill many of the characteristics of a grab bag. In fact, the performances of the Green-Whites are elusive. Time and again, coach Ole Werner’s team shows flashes of potential. In the same breath, however, the many individual lapses and weak phases within a match must also be addressed. Defensively, in particular, Werder’s players allow themselves too many lapses in concentration, which often lead to avoidable goals being conceded.

Although the former German champions conceded the fewest goals of all clubs in the bottom half of the table, 20 goals conceded equates to an average of exactly two goals per game. In four out of ten matches played in the current Bundesliga season, keepers Pavlenka/Zetterer have had to fish the ball out of the net three or more times. This compares to just two clean sheets, both of which came in front of a home crowd.

Only four teams have celebrated more home wins than Werder

In general, it is quite obvious that the Werner team is much stronger at home than away. All three BL wins so far this season have come at the Weserstadion. Only the top four in the table have celebrated more victories at home than Bremen, who have only lost at home to FC Bayern (0:4) and TSG Hoffenheim (2:3). For comparison: in the previous season, the Green-Whites were still one of the weakest home teams in Germany’s top flight.

It is also interesting to note that 18 goals have been scored in the five home games to date. In four out of five matches on the Weser, the over 2.5 would have gone through. Over the entire season, a bet on at least three goals in the course of the match would have been successful in seven out of ten cases.

SV Werder can also count on Marvin Ducksch in top form at the moment. The attacker has been involved in at least one goal in seven of his last eight Bundesliga matches (four goals, three assists). Ducksch is therefore not only the internal top scorer in the Werner team, but also the third-best Bundesliga goal scorer in the 2023 calendar year behind Guirassy and Kane.

Predicted Werder Bremen line-up:

Frankfurt – Statistics & current form

Many coaches attach great importance to team-building events during summer preparation. But what really welds a collective together is a sense of achievement and victories. This may also be one of the reasons why Eintracht Frankfurt is getting stronger from week to week. There is currently no shortage of positive results for the SGE.

The eagle bearers have reached the knockout rounds of the Conference League ahead of schedule, have progressed to the round of 16 of the DFB Cup without any worries and are in a promising chasing position in the Bundesliga. In seventh place in the table, they are currently just four points off the Champions League places. They have already built up a comfortable cushion at the bottom. What’s more, after just one three-pointer from the first six league games in 2023/24, they have recently picked up ten points from four matches. In the previous week, the away game at Union Berlin was won 3:0

Something big is being built on the Main again…

Omar Marmoush was the match-winner at the Alte Försterei, scoring a brace in his second consecutive BL match and once again living up to his reputation as a lightning starter. Frankfurt’s top scorer now has six goals for the season and has scored four of them in the opening quarter of an hour. It is quite possible that the speedy Egyptian will also find the net against SVW’s occasionally sluggish defense.

Even more interesting between Werder Bremen and Frankfurt, however, is the prediction that a goal or two will be scored. While the SGE offense was still the biggest problem in the early stages of this season, Toppmöller’s team has scored three goals on each of the last three matchdays. In the Conference League against Helsinki two weeks ago, they even managed a 6:0 victory.

The self-confidence is immense, the momentum is also there after seven unbeaten competitive games in a row and it is also becoming increasingly apparent that sporting director Markus Krösche and his team have done a very good job again in the summer with a number of new signings. In addition to the aforementioned Marmoush, Koch, Larsson, Pacho, Skhiri and Chaibi have also hit the ground running. The latter in particular has recently become a difference-maker and his dream goal was also responsible for the 1:0 win in the second leg in Helsinki.

Predicted line-up for Frankfurt:

Werder Bremen – Frankfurt head-to-head comparison / H2H result

With 104 meetings in Germany’s top flight, the encounter between Bremen and Frankfurt is a real classic. Only against FC Schalke 04 (46) have Werder celebrated more first division victories than against Eintracht (43). The Hessians have defeated their northern German opponents 38 times – more than any other team in the Bundesliga.

Even more telling, however, is the recent past, in which the pendulum has swung more in SGE’s favor. Bremen have only won one of the last seven head-to-head meetings against the Eagles (three draws, three defeats). After two defeats in the previous season, Werder could now lose three matches in a row against Eintracht for the first time in 47 years (!). According to Werder Bremen vs. Frankfurt odds, such a scenario does not seem unrealistic

Werder Bremen – Frankfurt

In the exciting clash between Werder Bremen and Frankfurt, the betting odds promise an interesting and balanced match. Nevertheless, the visitors are considered to have a slight advantage, which is primarily due to their current form.

Coach Dino Toppmöller’s side are unbeaten in seven competitive matches, have picked up ten points from their last four games in the league and have really stepped up their attacking game in particular. Led by top scorer Marmoush, they have scored exactly three goals in each of their last three BL matches. The next goals are on the horizon against the vulnerable Werder defense

Although the two teams with the fewest shots on goal in the league will face each other on Sunday, we expect a high-scoring duel. Werder are at least one category stronger at home than away. SGE are on a great run and will also be looking to win on the Weser. We’re therefore pushing for at least three goals in the match between Werder Bremen and Frankfurt
