Alonso has a strong opponent directly on his Sevilla debut

Top of the league in La Liga on Saturday night, Sevilla host Real Madrid in a showdown at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan – it’s expected to be a torrid game, partly because it’s a reunion for Sergio Ramos. The Real legend has returned to his boyhood club Sevilla and will face his ex-club from the Spanish capital for the first time since his departure.

Can Ramos beat his old love with Sevilla or will the Blancos take the next three points in the battle  for the La Liga championship? In the Sevilla vs. Real Madrid match, a prediction on the visitors winning is naturally obvious; after all, they are not only top of the table, but have won eight of their nine league games, while Sevilla have made another false start to the season.

This one has also cost coach José Luis Mendilibar his job again. With a new coach, Sevilla is now of course harder for Real Madrid to calculate. If you bet on the Ramos and coach change effect, you will find exciting odds on the Andalusians in Sevilla vs. Real Madrid.

Sevilla – statistics & current form

Three defeats to start with, only two wins from eleven competitive matches in all competitions – this record became José Luis Mendilibar’s undoing surprisingly early on.

The veteran Spanish coach was only installed in March and had to resign before the international break. In May, the Andalusians even surprisingly won the Europa League with Mendilibar after a completely messed-up season; for Mendilibar, it was his first ever title as coach. But even this triumph apparently failed to give the coach more credit.

Mendilibar sacked: Alonso of Uruguay takes over Sevilla

The new Sevilla coach is Diego Alonso from Uruguay. The 48-year-old former Uruguayan national coach, who narrowly failed in the preliminary round with the national team at the 2022 World Cup, takes over a club in Europe for the first time. Alonso is therefore a blank slate and is expected to breathe new life into Sevilla, whose performances this season have been extremely mixed.

Wins have only come against promoted Las Palmas (1-0) and relegation candidates Almeria (5-1), and all the points lost to smaller teams such as Alaves, Girona, Osasuna and, most recently, Rayo Vallecano have been particularly painful. In the 2-2 draw before the international break, Sevilla even salvaged a point from a 0-2 deficit in injury time.

Two wins, eight points, 13 goals to 12 – for Sevilla, things should now get better with Alonso, but the fact that it is directly against Real Madrid on his debut is of course unfortunate. No wonder, then, that the betting odds on a home win at Sevilla vs. Real Madrid are high at 4.00 on average and Alonso’s new team is listed as an underdog.

Predicted Sevilla lineup:

Real Madrid – statistics & current form

So while Sevilla used the international break to change coaches, it came at the wrong time for Real Madrid. For the Blancos presented themselves in strong form, they shot Osasuna on Matchday 9 with 4-0 from the stadium. In fact, they had won three games in a row before that – all of them by zero (2-0 against Las Palmas, 3-0 at then-leader Girona). Not the greatest opponents, but victories that were not dangerous.

Real climbed to the top of the table and is on course to win the title. In the Champions League, too, two wins in two games were achieved, even if the victories against Union (1:0) and Napoli (3:2) were much tighter and more contested.

Will Real Madrid continue their strong form against Sevilla?

With that haul – 11 games, 10 wins – Real Madrid naturally travel to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan as favorites. The Merengues have won all of their last games here anyway (more on that in the head-to-head section below).

The guarantor of success so far has been Jude Bellingham. The ex-BVB star leads the scoring charts in Spain with a sensational eight goals from eight games. The Englishman even scored twice against Osasuna recently.

Predicted lineup of Real Madrid:

Sevilla – Real Madrid Direct Comparison / H2H Balance

The direct comparison speaks a clear language recently – as Sevilla has been waiting for a win against Real for some time. For nine games, the Andalusians have not been able to get a three-pointer against Real, and have even lost eight of those games. Most recently, there were four defeats in a row.

The last Sevilla victory dates back to September 2018, when there was a 3-0 win at the Sanchez Pizjuan. Carlo Ancelotti’s record as Real coach against Sevilla is almost flawless, with the Italian winning nine of his ten games against Sevilla and losing once.

In light of these records, the odds on the visitors’ victory certainly look a bit more interesting in Sevilla vs Real Madrid. By the way, the overall balance in La Liga is: 158 matches, 86 wins for Real, 45 wins for Sevilla with 27 draws.

Sevilla – Real Madrid Tip

Real Madrid have thus won more than half of all La Liga duels against Sevilla, add to that the current strength, the ongoing nine-game streak as well as Ancelotti’s personal haul against Sevilla, and you quickly arrive at the prediction for the Madrilenians to win away at Sevilla vs. Real Madrid.

However, the coaching change effect at Sevilla must also be taken into account, plus Sergio Ramos will be especially motivated against his old love; this emotionality could also play a small role within the team. That doesn’t mean that Real necessarily has to lose, but they should definitely be made life harder than last time. That’s why we’re betting on it being close – and are tipping Sevilla against Real Madrid to go into the dressing rooms with a draw at half-time.
