Is there another miracle at Anfield Road?

Last matchday in the English Premier League. It’s not the big showdown, but two teams can still become English champions. In the middle of it all is Jürgen Klopp with his LFC. However, the Reds do not have it in their own hands, but are dependent on leaders Manchester City losing to Aston Villa.

Currently, City are one point clear at the top of the table and have a goal difference that is six goals better. This means: Liverpool will only become champions if they win their own game against Wolverhampton and Manchester City cannot get beyond a draw at the same time. All other variants are just grey theory, for example a 6-goal defeat of the Citizens with a draw of the Reds.

LFC will simply have to do their own homework and then hope club legend Steven Gerrard gives Pep Guardiola and his boys a leg up as Aston Villa coach. Wolves should be little more than extras this weekend. Anything other than predicting a commanding home win in the Liverpool v Wolverhampton clash would be far-fetched.

The Reds are extremely strong on the last matchday. Under Jürgen Klopp, there were five wins and a draw for LFC on Closing Day. At Anfield Road, the last defeat on the last matchday was even in 1989.

Liverpool – Statistics & current form

The Reds have nothing to lose this weekend. They are the underdogs on the last matchday of the Premier League, but will still try everything to make a triple out of the previous double with the two English Cup victories this Sunday. This is followed by the grand final in the Champions League against Real Madrid next week.

Hope lives

Jürgen Klopp won’t be giving the Spaniards a second thought just yet. Even though they are dependent on a slip-up by City, the Reds are hoping to become champions after all. There is no doubt that LFC will do their homework. Liverpool are unbeaten at home in the Premier League this season. In total, the Reds haven’t lost in 17 games.

It is therefore clear that in the clash between Liverpool and Wolverhampton, you should only play the odds that will have something to do with a home win. After the FA Cup title, Kloppo visited Southampton with the Reds during the week and could afford to send a B-team onto the field. The Saints took an early lead, but Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip turned the game around to win 2-1 away.

Liverpool will not have all their stars on Sunday either. Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho are both injured. Against Wolves, it should be possible without them. However, Jürgen Klopp would like to have both of them in the final of the top flight. Otherwise, all players should be fit. In view of the upcoming showdown in the Champions League, perhaps more players could be spared.

Predicted Liverpool line-up:
Alisson – Robertson, Konate, Matip, Alexander-Arnold – Henderson, Thiago, Keita – Diogo Jota, Mane, Salah – coach: Klopp

Wolverhampton – Statistics & current form

Wolves fans have had to be very lenient with their team this season, managing just one goal per game in 37 Premier League matches. Nevertheless, Bruno Lage’s side have narrowly missed out on international contention and are eighth in the English league standings ahead of the final day of fixtures.

Gate shortage for Wolves

This shows that Wolverhampton are very solid defensively with only 40 goals conceded. However, it gives the impression that Bruno Lage’s team is just winding down the season. They haven’t won a game in six. Therefore, it would be absurd to predict that Liverpool will even win a point against Wolverhampton.

Last week, Norwich, bottom of the league and certain to be relegated, were guests in the West Midlands. Even in this last home game of the season, it was not enough for Wolves to win. The Canaries even took the lead. It was Rayan Ait-Nouri who scored the goal after just over an hour to make the final score 1-1.

Bruno Lage does not have any major injury worries ahead of the season finale at Anfield Road. There might be one or two injuries, but all in all, all players should be fit for action. We think it is conceivable that players who will be leaving the club will possibly get their last call-up for Wolves. In general, however, the best line-up would be possible.

Predicted Wolverhampton line-up:
Ruddy – Coady, Toti, Boly – Ait-Nouri, Moutinho, Neves, Otto – Neto, Jimenez, Hwang – Coach: Lage

Last matches played by Wolverhampton:

15/05/2022 – Wolverhampton 1 – 1 Norwich

12/05/2022 – Wolverhampton 1 – 5 Manchester City

30/04/2022 – Wolverhampton 0 – 3 Brighton

24/04/2022 – Burnley 1 – 0 Wolverhampton

Liverpool – Wolverhampton Direct comparison / H2H record

109 times the teams from Liverpool and Wolverhampton have faced each other on the pitch so far. The direct comparison is in favour of the Reds, but not as clearly as one might have imagined. LFC are 56:36 ahead after victories. 17 games ended in a draw. Yet the Reds have only improved this statistic significantly in recent years.

Liverpool have won ten times in a row against Wolves in the Premier League. Wolverhampton, on the other hand, have lost 17 of their last 19 games at Anfield Road. In the first leg in the East Midlands, however, LFC had to fear for victory for a long time. It took until the 90th minute before substitute Divock Origi’s joker goal gave them a 1-0 win.

Liverpool – Wolverhampton Tip

Liverpool will try to play forward from the first minute in this match, perhaps putting their Manchester opponents under early pressure with a quick goal.

The record on the last matchday, the general home strength of LFC, the victories in the direct duels and the general form leave no room to think about a tip on a point win for Wolves in the match between Liverpool and Wolverhampton. In the end, the only question will be whether Liverpool will still crown themselves with the title or will only be runners-up after all.

We can imagine that the Reds will win a handicap match. How high this can be, however, also depends largely on the line-up of the home side. However, there is no doubt about the attitude. Jürgen Klopp’s team will want to take the lead early and that is why we have decided to play the betting odds on HT/FT for the Reds between Liverpool and Wolverhampton.
