Will the Wolves also score at the Niederrhein?

In terms of the standings, this is a duel between two neighbours. VfL Wolfsburg are currently in ninth place, while Borussia Mönchengladbach enter the 27th matchday in tenth. However, there are seven points between the two clubs. Therefore, only the visitors from Lower Saxony have their sights set on Europe. In principle, the betting on a three-goal win for Gladbach against Wolfsburg seems much more likely.

The team from the Lower Rhine has been winless in five league games in a row (three draws, two defeats), while VfL has not lost a single game in the same period (two wins, three draws). However, the Lower Saxons are currently waiting for another win in six duels with the Foals (two draws, four defeats), which is why it is not exactly easy to make a prediction on the outcome of the Gladbach vs Wolfsburg match.

In principle, we see VfL as having a slight advantage, especially as the Lower Saxons are third in the away table and have lost only one of their last nine Bundesliga away games (five wins, three draws). However, this is countered by a certain Gladbach strength at home. The Foals have won seven of their 13 league games at Borussia-Park.

In view of the fact that the Wolves have conceded only 12 goals in 13 Bundesliga away games and thus have the best away defence in the Bundesliga, there is not much to be said for a goal festival on the Lower Rhine. The best possible value in our eyes is therefore a bet on less than 2.5 goals.

Gladbach – Statistics & current form

Borussia Mönchengladbach actually wanted to attack the top again for the 2022/23 season under Daniel Farke after the last two years, which ended in the dismal midfield of the Bundesliga. However, with only 32 points from 26 league games – since 2010/11, the team from the Lower Rhine has only once been worse (30 points in 2021/22) – this endeavour must be declared a failure prematurely.

With a nine-point gap, sixth place in the table is still mathematically attainable. However, in view of the recent results, there is not much to suggest that the Foals will be able to start a new series.

Winless for five league games in a row

In the last five games alone, in which the Borussians remained winless for so long in a row for the first time under Daniel Farke, Gladbach managed to pick up just three points out of a possible 15 (three draws, two defeats). Currently, only 1. FC Köln have been winless for longer (six games), against whom they only managed a dismal 0:0 in the derby.

Overall, the team from the Lower Rhine has only won one of its last eight league games (four draws, three defeats). It is therefore all the more surprising that the odds on Gladbach against Wolfsburg are swinging in the direction of the Foals.

So far 14 points squandered after leads

While Gladbach have a solid home record. A total of seven of the 13 Bundesliga home games in the 2022/23 season were won (three draws, three defeats). However, not only does the tenth-placed team lack the offensive punch, which is underlined by the fact that Borussia remained goalless in four of the last five league games, but even on good days, the perseverance to then actually draw a game has been lacking time and again.

The Foals have squandered a staggering 14 points in the 2022/23 season after taking the lead. An unbelievably high figure, topped only by FC Augsburg (18). In this context, the fact that Jonas Omlin and Marcus Thuram have now clashed in training certainly suggests that morale is not the best in Gladbach.

Wolfsburg – Statistics & current form

VfL Wolfsburg did not get off to a good start to the 2022/23 season and also had some unpleasant side issues to work through around the rift between Niko Kovac and Max Kruse early in the current campaign. Shortly afterwards, however, the Wolves took off.

With 39 points from 26 league games, the Lower Saxons are “only” ninth in the table. However, a Europa League starting place is currently only two points away, which is why all chances of a top-six finish are still there.

Unbeaten in five league games

The 2009 German champions are particularly encouraged by their recent run. VfL have not lost any of their last five league games (two wins, three draws) and have once again performed very well away from home.

The Lower Saxons have lost only one of their last nine Bundesliga away games (five wins, three draws) and, with 21 points, are third in the away table behind Bayern (24) and Dortmund (22). Accordingly, the prediction for Gladbach against Wolfsburg is that the Wolves will win a point at Borussia Park.

The best away defence in the Bundesliga

In addition, the Kovac eleven has its great strength in the defence. The Lower Saxons have conceded just twelve goals in 13 Bundesliga away games. That is by far the best value in the league.

In six of the 13 Bundesliga away games, VfL kept a clean sheet, which in turn clearly favours our bet on less than 2.5 goals. After all, a Borussia team that has not been very effective of late should have a hard time scoring at all against a Wolves team that is strong defensively and in terms of form.

Gladbach – Wolfsburg Direct Comparison / H2H Balance

Head to head: 14 – 10 – 22

There have been a total of 46 meetings between the two teams so far and with 22 wins, VfL Wolfsburg leads the direct comparison very clearly. Recently, however, there has not been much to gain for the Wolves in this duel. Gladbach are currently unbeaten in six encounters with the Lower Saxons (two wins, four draws).

Gladbach – Wolfsburg tip

With Gladbach against Wolfsburg, the betting odds do go in the direction of the Foals, who have not lost to the Wolves in six league games (two wins, four draws). However, VfL is one of the Bundesliga’s strongest away teams, which is why betting on Borussia to extend their unbeaten streak against Lower Saxony involves a certain amount of risk. After all, the team from the Lower Rhine has been waiting five league games for another win (three draws, two defeats).

We think it’s much more consistent to bet on Gladbach against Wolfsburg to score less than 2.5 goals. After all, no team has conceded fewer goals away from home (only twelve) or kept a clean sheet away from home more often (six times already) than the in-form VfL.
