Will the Toffees surprise at Stamford Bridge?
Chelsea Football Club and Everton Football Club face an intense and challenging final sprint in the Premier League. There is still a lot at stake for both clubs. The Londoners are desperate to return to the international stage after a year away, while the visitors from Liverpool are primarily concerned with collecting important points in their fight to stay up. We’re therefore looking forward to an explosive and trend-setting head-to-head clash at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening from 9:00 p.m.
Surprisingly, the bookmakers are very confident that Mauricio Pochettino’s side will come out on top ahead of this game. Although this assessment is certainly understandable in view of the standings, it must be critically questioned whether the odds for a home win between Chelsea and Everton actually offer attractive value. After all, the capital club has rarely been one hundred percent convincing in recent weeks
In addition, the Chelsea vs Everton prediction must take into account that the Toffees will do everything they can to take something worthwhile away from the capital. Above all, the recently improved defense could mean that the young home team will have to exercise patience. A quality that the former Champions League winners have lacked time and time again this season… If you want to place a bet on the underdog against this backdrop, you can of course do so at Interwetten. Chelsea – Statistics & current form
Chelsea Football Club still have a lot at stake in the final weeks of the season. While the Blues are fighting for a place in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley next weekend, qualification for international business is still very much within their grasp. Although they are currently only in ninth place in the interim rankings, the Londoners have two matches fewer to their name than their direct rivals. If they were to pick up a total of six points from these two games, Chelsea would draw level on points with sixth-placed Manchester United.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino’s team will look to take the next step towards a return to the international stage on Monday evening. Ahead of the Chelsea v Everton clash, the odds on a home win are significantly lower. However, as already indicated, the one-sidedness of the odds distribution must be critically questioned. After all, the Blues have only won three of their last nine Premier League matches and had to settle for a disappointing 2-2 draw at bottom-placed Sheffield United the previous week, for example.
Chelsea find solutions against a deep-lying opponent?
The record in front of a home crowd is far more impressive. The former Champions League winners have not lost any of their last seven league games at Stamford Bridge. However, it must also be noted that they have only managed to pick up a single point in four of these seven matches. To make matters worse, Chelsea have now gone nine PL home games without a clean sheet. In general, their own defense remains the biggest problem for the star ensemble from the English capital, who have had to learn the hard way over the course of the season so far – no doubt also due to their many talented players.
A total of 52 goals have already been conceded, 25 of them at home. In the seven most recent PL matches involving the CFC, both teams have scored at least two goals each, meaning that the focus between Chelsea and Everton could quickly turn to a prediction of over-goals. However, we are against this assessment, as Liverpool’s extremely defensive approach should ensure that the game will not be as wild as one might expect based on recent results.
Predicted Chelsea line-up:
Everton – Statistics & current form
Similar to last season, the Toffees’ managers must also acknowledge this season that there is a very poor relationship between aspiration and reality. In 2022/23, Liverpool were only able to secure their place in the league on the home straight. In 2023/24, it could also take until the final matchday before their fate, for better or worse, is sealed.
In any case, the starting position suggests an immense pressure situation for the Blues, who are just two points clear of the first relegation spot. However, the 16th-placed side must be given credit for the fact that they have two games in hand to catch up and a small run of success could be enough to get them out of the dangerous zone.
The fact that Everton have to worry about avoiding relegation at all is partly due to the fact that the club was deducted six points. In other words, the Toffees are actually stronger than their place in the table would suggest. If you want to bet on a surprising win for the visitors, you will find attractive odds for the double chance X2 between Chelsea and Everton.
Everton’s defense can keep up with the top teams on the island
The fact that we believe Sean Dyche’s team can achieve a decent result at Stamford Bridge is primarily down to their good defensive record. With just 42 goals conceded, Liverpool have the fourth-best defense in the Premier League. Aston Villa have been the only team so far this season to score more than three goals against Everton. Looking back at the eleven league games played in 2024, there has only been one match in which keeper Pickford and Co. have conceded three or more goals.
They also finally ended their drought in the previous week. Calvert-Lewin and his colleagues celebrated their first Premier League treble with a 1-0 home win against Burnley, which lifted a lot of weight off their shoulders and gave their confidence a huge boost. The relegation candidates’ attacker, who was mentioned by name, is symbolic of his team’s recent decent performance, picking up four points from two games. After a run of 18 consecutive PL matches without a goal, Calvert-Lewin got on the scoresheet in each of the last two weekends
Predicted Everton line-up:
Chelsea – Everton head-to-head comparison / H2H record
Stamford Bridge has been anything but a good place for Everton FC in recent years/decades. The Toffees have failed to win any of their last 28 (!) away league games against the Blues from London. Their last away win came in 1994. However, Dyche’s side still have fond memories of the first leg, in which they came out on top 2-0. Doucouré and Dobbin scored Everton’s goals. For the first time since 1978/79, they can now look forward to a season double, i.e. two wins in the first and second half of the season
Chelsea – Everton tip
On paper, the duel between Chelsea and Everton is a very notable one in the English top flight. However, the most successful times for both clubs are somewhat in the past. The home side from London once again have to fear for their participation in the European Cup, while the spectre of relegation is still causing unrest in the blue part of Liverpool. There is therefore a lot at stake in the direct clash. Both teams are in desperate need of points, but the coaches have fundamentally different approaches.
While Pochettino focuses on the offense in the capital – also due to the young average age – but also has to live with the fact that things get wild in many cases, his counterpart Sean Dyche stands for unconditional defense like hardly any other coach. Since we assume that the Toffees will once again rely on a very solid, deep defense on Monday night, we think it is very realistic that the hosts, who have rarely recorded positive results recently, will have problems and need more patience than many expect
With this in mind, we’re betting on Chelsea and Everton to score a maximum of one goal in the first half.
