The two matches ended 3-1 and 2-1: Real Madrid (6-1 over Monaco), Tottenham (2-0 over Borussia Dortmund), Olympiacos (2-0 over Bayer Leverkusen), Ajax (2-1 away at Villarreal), and Bruges (4-1 away at Kairat) also won

There was no shortage of surprises on a remarkable Champions League night. It started with Manchester City suffering a resounding defeat at Bodo/Glimt, but Paris Saint-Germain followed suit, brought down by a brace from Luis Suárez. Sporting asserted the “Alvalade rule”—they’ve always won there in the tournament so far—and this time, the French side paid the price. It all happened in the second half, with the Colombian scoring the first goal off a set piece. The equalizer was a gem from Kvaratskhelia, who cut inside and fired into the top corner, but just as the 90th minute ticked over, Chevalier made a sloppy deflection off Trincao’s shot, and Suarez headed it in for the final 2-1 score.

A score straight out of the Australian Open for Real Madrid, who rediscover the warmth of the Bernabéu with a flurry of goals. Mbappé scored a brace early on against his former team, Monaco, then in the second half the Blancos ran riot: Mastantuono, followed by Kehrer’s own goal, and then Vinicius’s clincher. Teze narrowed the gap by punishing a reckless rush off the line by Real, and Bellingham rounded out the scoring by slotting it past the goalkeeper.

Other matches—  A huge win for Tottenham, who beat Borussia Dortmund in the head-to-head battle for eighth place. Romero opened the scoring by finishing off a pass in the center of the box, and Solanke doubled the lead by deflecting the ball off himself. The Germans were unable to mount a response, largely due to Svensson’s red card in the 26th minute for a very dangerous tackle. It also ended 2-0 in Athens, with Olympiacos defeating Bayer Leverkusen: Costinha scored with a header off a corner, and Taremi finished off a counterattack in fine style. Ajax had reason to smile after coming from behind to beat Villarreal: Oluwaseyi gave the Spaniards false hope, Gloukh equalized with a free kick from a tight angle, and Edvardsen sealed the comeback with a precise right-footed shot. It was an easy win for Bruges on the road against Kairat Almaty (1–4).
