Will Lazio get their first win against the Scots?
The stressful days continue for all teams represented in international competitions. This time it’s matchday 2 and we take a look at the Champions League. In Group E, Celtic Glasgow receive Lazio Roma and the predictions of the best betting providers let us hope for an exciting clash. From our point of view, this group is almost balanced. In addition to these two protagonists, Feyenoord Rotterdam and Atletico Madrid are also represented. The Spaniards are slight favourites to make it to the knockout phase.
But behind them it will be a neck-and-neck race, with the Scots given the least chance. After the opening defeat, it is now important to keep open the possibility of at least finishing second with a three-goal win in front of their own fans. The bookmakers see the hosts in the underdog role and offer odds of 2.95 at the top for betting on the Bhoys in the match between Celtic Glasgow and Lazio Roma. In the Scottish Premier League, the Green and Whites have been the measure of all things in recent years and this season is also going like hot cakes.
The situation is completely different for Lazio. Last year’s reigning runners-up have struggled to get off the starting blocks this season. At the start of the Champions League, a defeat against Atletico was just avoided in injury time. We’ll find out if they can get their first treble against the Scots on Wednesday from 21:00, when kick-off is at Celtic Park.
Celtic Glasgow – Statistics & current form
On a national level, Celtic Glasgow have been the dominant team in recent years. Eleven of the last twelve championship titles went to the Bhoys. Only the city rivals Rangers managed to straddle them once. This summer, the Green and Whites set a record by winning the triple, consisting of the championship, cup and league cup, for the eighth time.
The current season is also going well so far. After seven matchdays, the Scots have six wins and one draw to their credit and are thus at the top of the league table. They are already four points ahead of St. Mirren.
In the dress rehearsal for the upcoming Champions League match, the Bhoys narrowly missed losing a point. The Green and Whites equalised at Motherwell in the 95th minute, only to score the winner on the direct counterattack.
Celtic with strong attack
The hosts were convincing both offensively and defensively. With sixteen goals, the team of head coach Brendan Rodgers has the best attacking line-up in the Premier League. The best marksman is Matthew O’Riley, who has already beaten the opposing keeper five times. The defence in front of goalkeeper Joe Hart has only conceded four goals. This is the second best value in the league in this statistic.
The first appearance in this year’s Champions League was forgettable to say the least. The Bhoys delivered a poor performance and conceded a fully deserved 2-0 defeat in Rotterdam. But not only the points were lost, but with Lagerbielke (yellow-red) and Holm (red card) two players did not see the end of the match on the pitch and will miss their team in the upcoming encounter.
Glasgow have had little success in the Champions League
This does not make the task against the Italians any easier and the bookmakers’ hopes for a win for the home side are correspondingly muted. In the match between Celtic Glasgow and Lazio Roma, odds of 2.95 are being called at the top for bets on the Green-Whites. This assessment is supported by the fact that the Scots have only won one of their last 22 Champions League games.
Celtic are a force in front of their own fans. They have yet to lose a home game this year. In seventeen games, fourteen wins and three draws have been achieved across the competition. Rodgers’ side will be looking to build on that strength on Wednesday.
Predicted line-up of Celtic Glasgow:
Celtic Glasgow (Expected line-up) 4-3-3
Lazio Roma – Statistics & current form
Lazio Roma can look back on a successful last season. Behind the clear dominator from Napoli, the Romans led the rest of the field and took the runner-up spot with sixteen points behind SSC. This excellent result enabled them to reach the group stage of the Champions League. However, the start to the current season has not really been successful.
The visitors have only won two of their first seven games. On the other hand, they have already suffered four defeats. The total of seven points means that they are currently only in fourteenth place in the table, which does not meet the expectations of head coach Maurizio Sarri’s team. The lead over the first relegation place is only four points, and the gap to a Champions League starting place is already seven points.
Lazio only with an away win
The Eagles have only managed one win in their last five competitive matches. That came in a 2-0 win over FC Torino. Last weekend, a 2-0 defeat at AC Milan exacerbated the crisis. The Biancocelesti are currently not scary on their opponents’ pitch. They have lost three of their four away games this season.
The Biancocelesti hosted Atletico Madrid at the start of the group stage. In a less than spectacular match, the real highlight came in injury time. In the 95th minute, the Romans threw everything forward at the last corner kick and even keeper Provedel could not keep it out. It was he who finally pushed the ball over the line for the equaliser.
Lazio with good record in Champions League group games
Now it’s off to the biggest underdog to progress in this group. After the lost points in their own stadium, a three-point win away from home would suit the Eagles well. Since the Italians have not lost any of their last seven Champions League group matches, a point in Scotland is also realistic. In the match between Celtic Glasgow and Lazio Roma, odds of 2.40 are paid for bets on the visitors. However, the truth is that the Aquile have only won one of their last sixteen CL away matches.
Predicted Lazio Roma line-up:
Lazio Roma (Expected line-up) 4-3-3
Celtic Glasgow – Lazio Roma Direct Comparison / H2H Balance
The two teams have met twice so far and both duels have gone in favour of the Bhoys. The matches took place in the UEFA Europa League. For the upcoming match between Celtic Glasgow and Lazio Roma, however, the oddsmakers see the advantage on the side of the visitors. The odds are 2.40 at the top.
In the 2019/20 Europa League group stage, the Green-Whites met the Eagles in Group E. Both encounters ended 2-1 in favour of the Scots. Celtic won the group and advanced to the final round, while the Himmelblauen only finished third and were eliminated in the end.
Celtic Glasgow – Lazio Roma Tip
2nd matchday in the Champions League and we see the hosts under pressure to get something countable in front of their own fans after the opening defeat. Lazio are a welcome opponent who have been beaten in their previous two encounters. Last year, Rodgers’ side were eliminated from the competition at the bottom of the group. A win on Wednesday would increase their chances of progressing.
Things are not yet going well for the visitors this season. They have only won twice in the league and only managed a lucky draw against Atletico in their opener. Their record in away games in this competition also gives little cause for optimism.
We actually don’t see the home side without a chance in this clash. It’s time for the Scots to improve their poor Champions League statistics anyway. Why not against the Italians, who have not won any of their last eleven matches against British teams. Therefore, our recommendation for the match between Celtic Glasgow and Lazio Roma is to bet on the double chance 1/X at odds of 1.60 offered by the tested bookmaker Betano.
We expect a game in which not many goals will be scored. Therefore, in the match Celtic Glasgow vs. Lazio Roma, at odds of 2.08, betting on a duel with less than 2.5 goals is a good alternative. This mark was not exceeded on the first matchday in this group.
