Next setback for Spurs?

Nearly four months into his tenure, current Tottenham Hotspur head coach Nuno Espírito Santo’s adventure in London is coming to an end. So far, the Portuguese has fallen short of the high expectations – especially in the Premier League. Nine matchdays after the start of the season in the English top flight, Spurs have already suffered four defeats.

Internationally, Tottenham is also in free fall. If the rollercoaster ride continues, it is only a matter of time before the Spurs board pulls the ripcord and sacks the Portuguese. According to media reports, there is a clause in place anyway that allows for an inexpensive dismissal at least at the end of the season.

Just a few days after the derby defeat against West Ham, Tottenham already have their next must-win game on the agenda this week. Spurs will face league rivals Burnley FC in the last 16 of the EFL Cup. According to the best bookmakers, Tottenham are only minimally favoured in this match.

Burnley vs Tottenham odds of just 2.30 are offered for an away win for the Londoners. A bet on the home side, on the other hand, is rewarded with betting odds of up to 3.20 if successful.

Burnley – Statistics & Current Form

The Clarets from Burnley have not been to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup since the 2008/09 season. Last year, the Clarets were defeated by the Manchester Citizens in the last 16. This season, head coach Sean Dyche’s charges are back in the fourth round of the cup and face a stumbling Spurs side from London during the week.

At Turf Moor, they have a realistic chance of reaching the last 16 of the EFL Cup, at least this season. At home, Burnley have lost only one of their last four home games. Their recent home record against Wednesday’s opponents is also impressive.

The Clarets have conceded just one defeat in three home games against Spurs since December 2017. That home defeat came last season, when Burnley FC narrowly missed out on a point in a 1-0 loss to the Londoners. The Premier League table situation should not be overestimated with regard to the upcoming cup game.

Will the quarter-finals be over for Burnley FC?

Dyche is expected to avoid rotation for the home match against Spurs from London and will tackle the League Cup with his best line-up. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that Burnley will eliminate the sixth-placed team in the Premier League from the current cup competition.

If you want to bet on Burnley vs. Tottenham, you can more than triple your stake. To do so, the Clarets will just have to tweak their attacking game. With only seven goals in nine Premier League matches, Burnley have the second-weakest attack in the English top flight.

The only encouraging result was last weekend, when the offensive knot burst in the away game at Southampton. The Clarets scored two goals against the relegation rivals and thus warmed up for the cup game. Dyche will only have to do without Mee and Stephens in the EFL Cup due to injury.

Predicted Burnley line-up:
Hennessey – Lowton, Long, Tarkowski, Pieters – Gudmundsson, Brownhill, Cork, Cornet – Vydra, Rodriguez

Tottenham – Statistics & current form

Tottenham are still struggling against their poor start to the season. Neither on the international stage nor in the Premier League have Spurs been convincing so far. In the English top flight, the Londoners even suffered a bitter derby defeat against West Ham United. Tottenham thus remained without a point in the league for the fourth time this season.

Since the other rivals in the Premier League have not had a good start to the season either, Spurs still have a chance to turn things around in the next few weeks. The competitive matches before the international break will also point the way ahead for head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. The Portuguese is on the sidelines.

According to media reports, the Portuguese’s dismissal is no longer impossible. Although half of the first half of the Premier League season has already been completed, there is still no clear concept of play to be seen at Spurs. It was therefore not at all surprising that Tottenham failed in the London derby against WHU last time.

No offensive power available?

As in the Conference League, Tottenham Hotspur remained scoreless in the league. It is quite possible that this negative trend will continue in the EFL Cup. It is likely that Spurs will not be at their best in the League Cup. It is even likely that most of the key players will be spared for the next top match in the Premier League.

This weekend, the home game against Manchester United awaits. Last season, Spurs were still in the final of the EFL Cup. In the final, Tottenham narrowly missed out on their first EFL Cup title since 2008 against Manchester City. In the previous five years, Spurs had only made it past the last 16 of the League Cup once.

Apart from the two injured players Matt Doherty and Ryan Sessegnon, Tottenham Hotspur have no other absentees. If Spurs can overcome the cup tie at Turf Moor even with a potential B eleven, odds of 2.30 are paid on Burnley vs Tottenham for tip 2.

Predicted line-up of Tottenham:
Gollini – Tanganga, Romero, Sanchez, Davies – Hojbjerg, Skipp, Alli – Moura, Gil, Bergwijn

Last matches played by Tottenham:

Premier League
10/24 2021 – West Ham 1 – 0 Tottenham

Europa Conference League Grp. G
10/21 2021 – Vitesse Arnhem 1 – 0 Tottenham

Premier League
10/17 2021 – Newcastle United 2 – 3 Tottenham

Burnley – Tottenham Direct Comparison / H2H Record

Burnley FC and Tottenham Hotspur meet for the 120th time. So far, the Londoners lead the head-to-head comparison against the Clarets with a record of 50-28-41. On average, 3.32 goals have been scored in matches between the two clubs.

Because Spurs’ offence did not make a good impression last week, it is more than daring to predict over 2.5 goals in the cup match between Burnley and Tottenham. After all, the three-goal mark has only been broken in one of Burnley’s last three competitive matches.

Across competitions, the Clarets have lost only three of their last nine home games against Tottenham at Turf Moor. The last time the two clubs met in the League Cup almost twelve years ago, Burnley prevailed 3-0 in regulation time. However, the Clarets lost in extra time.

Burnley – Tottenham Tip

The League Cup has no special significance for Spurs from London. Already in the last season, the second guard of the Londoners kicked in the EFL Cup. It was not until the quarter-finals that more of the top players were used. We expect a similar development in this year’s League Cup, so we can also expect rotation against Burnley FC.

The Clarets, on the other hand, will probably start the home game with their best line-up. Although Burnley are in a relegation battle in the Premier League, a second-team line-up in the cup match against Spurs seems rather unrealistic. After all, the previous round against Rochdale, a club from the fourth-tier League Two, saw an increase in the number of players from the regular squad being used.

With Burnley vs. Tottenham, our betting odds are on a home win. We are betting five out of ten possible units. The best odds for a Clarets win are offered by Unibet
