Is the offensive knot finally bursting for the Kompany team?
England’s second highest division, the Championship, is known as a real mammoth league. No wonder, because 46 regular match days will be played until the beginning of May, before the play-offs towards the Premier League are also on the agenda. But because this league is also taking a break during the World Cup in Qatar, there are already a number of English weeks at this early stage of the season.
On Tuesday night we can look forward to Burnley v Hull at the venerable Turf Moor. Odds of max. 1.60 on a home win underline the role of favourites for the Premier League relegated team, who are on four points after three matchdays and therefore already feel a certain pressure. The team of coach Vincent Kompany has not really been able to convince so far.
The start to the season of the visitors from Hull is much more positive. The Tigers already have seven points to their name and have already beaten Norwich City, another team relegated from the top flight, at the weekend. In view of these impressions, a prediction on the supposed underdogs in the Burnley vs. Hull clash does not seem outlandish at all, even if the wine reds are rightly favoured in terms of quality in conjunction with the home advantage.
Burnley – Statistics & current form
Over many years, Burnley have been privileged to host England’s best club sides at Turf Moor. On several occasions, the Clarets, who were mostly defined by an excellent defence, caused surprises. It was only last season, however, that the Premier League adventure came to an end for the club from Lancashire, which has set itself the goal of immediately fighting for a return to the top flight.
The start of the new season, however, did not go according to plan. After three match days, only four points could be collected. Only on the first matchday was there a 1-0 win at Huddersfield to celebrate. This was followed by a weak 1-1 draw against Luton Town and a 1-0 defeat at Watford at the weekend, when they were even forced to play the last ten minutes with a shorthanded side.
Defensive is stable, offensive has room for improvement
The biggest problem remains the too harmless offensive. Two goals in three matches are obviously far too few for the demands of the team that has been coached by Vincent Kompany since the summer. Defensively, however, the Clarets are already back to a decent level, so we would definitely consider a bet on sub-par goals between Burnley and Hull.
On the positive side, the Clarets are much stronger at home than away from home. Against this background, we believe that the home side will prevail this time and be able to celebrate their first home win of the new season.
In terms of quality, Kompany’s team is better, and Burnley have had an extra day to recover. In the fourth game in 17 days, the rested legs could well be an important factor.

Hull – Statistics & current form
Similarly to the hosts, Hull City have their real superstar sitting out on the bench. Shota Arveladze has been coach of the Tigers since the end of January 2022, but so far looks at a maximum average record. Under his leadership, an average of just 1.26 points has been scored in 23 competitive games. Hull finished last season in a disappointing 19th place and has continually lowered its standards in recent years.
This makes the strong start to the season all the more surprising. Seven points after three games are currently enough for second place behind Blackburn. Bristol City and Norwich were both beaten 2-1 at home. The only away game so far was a goalless draw at Preston North End. This result also underlines once again that on Tuesday between Burnley and Hill a prediction on few goals should make sense.
Hull have had a lot of intense matches in a very short space of time
The former first division club did not do particularly well away from home last season. Eleven of the 23 guest games were lost. With 19 goals scored, the Orange-Blacks also had one of the weakest offences in the league. They have not won an away match at league level since the beginning of April. Hull also failed in the first round of the EFL Cup in the previous week at fourth division Bradford City (1:2).
Two conclusions can be drawn from this. Firstly, the home side need have no fear of the Tigers as a visiting team. Secondly, the Arveladze eleven is already playing its fifth competitive match in the last three weeks. In the midst of the second English week, which also includes the second away trip, we do not expect the second-placed team to be able to confirm their strong start and take something tangible away from Burnley.
Predicted line-up of Hull:
Ingram; Coyle, Figueiredo, Greaves, Elder; Jones, Slater; Sayyadmanesh, Tufan, Tetteh; Estupinan

Burnley – Hull Direct comparison / H2H record
This clash has taken place six times in England’s top flight. Hull City never won (0-2-4). One level below, the record reads a little better from the Tigers’ point of view. In 44 meetings, 20 victories for the Clarets and 15 victories for Hull are in the statistics. For the first time since 2016/17, the two teams are back together in the same league. In 2015/16, the last Second Division season to date, the home side prevailed on each occasion. The Wine Reds have won five of their last seven Second Division home games against the Tigers.
Burnley – Hull Tip
The second English league has so far been characterised by many close matches with rather few goals. We expect such a match on Tuesday evening, when Burnley and Hull face each other at Turf Moor. According to the betting odds, the Clarets are relatively clear favourites, but the visitors have actually made a better start to the season.
Arveladze’s side have an impressive seven points after three matchdays, while Burnley are on four points with just one win, one draw and one defeat. That certain advantages nevertheless lie with the Premier League relegated side results from the higher individual quality, the home advantage and the fact that the hosts will be somewhat fitter.
