Are FCA taking revenge for their Cup exit?

On 27 October 2021, both teams just faced each other in the 2nd round of the DFB Pokal. There, the Fuggerstädter were able to level a 0:2 deficit and force a penalty shootout. In the end, however, FCA lost 4:5 and was eliminated from the competition. Now the Bavarian Swabians want to take revenge in league play.

However, VfL will arrive in good form. Bochum have won four of their last six league games and are three points ahead of FCA in the standings. Nevertheless, in the run-up to the encounter between Augsburg and Bochum, the odds are swinging in the direction of the Fuggerstädter, who have recently remained unbeaten in four home games in a row (three wins, one draw).

However, there is also a number that clearly speaks against FCA. For 14 Bundesliga home games, the Fuggerstädter have not been able to win against a promoted team. They thus set the previous negative record of 13 games, which was previously held by today’s guests from Bochum, of all places.

Accordingly, it is difficult to make a prediction on the outcome of the match between Augsburg and Bochum. Also because 50% of all league goals were scored in the final quarter of an hour, it makes a lot of sense to bet on a late goal (after 72:59).

Augsburg – statistics & current form

FC Augsburg were promoted to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2011 and have since firmly established themselves in the Beletage of German football. The Fuggerstädter even finished the 2014/15 season in fifth place, after which they reached the sixteenth finals of the Europa League, where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Liverpool in the first and second legs.

Most recently, however, the reality for the Bavarian Swabians has been a pure relegation battle. In two of the last three seasons, FCA finished just above the line in 15th place in the final table.

Ten points out of twelve from the last four home games

Currently, the Fuggerstädter are below the line under returnee Markus Weinzierl, who began his second spell in charge in April this year. Because only 13 points have been scored from the first 13 league games, FCA enter the 14th matchday in 16th place and are accordingly doomed to score against VfL Bochum.

At least the home record of the Bavarian Swabians is quite respectable. Augsburg have picked up ten of a possible twelve points from their last four home games and even celebrated a surprising coup in their 2-1 victory over FC Bayern.

No win against a promoted team in 14 league home games

Never the less, the tip for Augsburg’s next home treble against Bochum is not under the best of stars. Not only did FCA lose to VfL in the DFB Pokal just five weeks ago, but the Fuggerstädter also have a very poor home record against promoted teams.

The red-green-whites have not won a single one of the last 14 home games in which a promoted team has played at the WWK Arena (eight draws, six defeats). In addition, there was also a 0:1 home defeat in the only home match against the Bochum team so far on 31 January 2011.

Bochum – Statistics & current form

VfL Bochum surprisingly celebrated the championship in the 2. Bundesliga in the 2020/21 season under Thomas Reis, returning to the Beletage of German football after eleven consecutive years in the second division.

Five wins in last seven competitive matches

At first, the Verein für Leibesübungen won only one of their first seven league games and were stuck in the bottom of the table after four points out of a possible 21, which initially made it look as if Thomas Reis’ squad was not competitive enough.

But then the Blue and Whites emphatically got their act together. The Bochum side won four of their last six league games, thus celebrating as many victories as in the previous 28 Bundesliga games put together. They also reached the last 16 of the DFB Cup after defeating their opponents from Augsburg today.

Lost six of last seven Bundesliga away games

The VfL can therefore come into the away game in the Fuggerstadt with renewed self-confidence, where after all they also won their only ever away game with 1:0. Nevertheless, the odds are stacked against Augsburg against Bochum in the Grönemeyer City.

Predicted line-up of Bochum:
Esser – Soares – Leitsch – Masovic – Stafylidis – Losilla – Rexhbecaj – Löwen – Holtmann – Asano – Polter

Last matches played by Bochum:

11/27 2021 – Vfl Bochum 2 – 1 SC Freiburg

11/20 2021 – Bayer Leverkusen 1 – 0 Vfl Bochum

11/06 2021 – Vfl Bochum 2 – 0 Hoffenheim

10/31 2021 – Borussia Mönchengladbach 2 – 1 Vfl Bochum

DFB Cup
10/27 2021 – Vfl Bochum (5)2 – 2(4) Augsburg

Augsburg – Bochum Direct Comparison / H2H Balance

Head to head: 1 – 0 – 2

Only three times have the two teams faced each other in a competitive match. The first time was in the 2010/11 season in the 2nd Bundesliga, when the away team came out on top. Just under five weeks ago, however, VfL Bochum recorded their first home victory over FCA in the DFB Pokal with a 5:4 penalty shootout win.

Augsburg – Bochum Tip

For Augsburg against Bochum, the forecast has to take into account that the guests from the Ruhr area arrive in strong form. VfL won five of their last seven competitive matches – including the victory over FCA in the DFB Pokal. Nevertheless, the Blue and Whites’ away record reads decidedly poor, with six defeats in their last seven Bundesliga away games.

This contrasts with Augsburg’s poor record in home games against promoted teams, while ten of the last twelve points have been taken at the WWK Arena. That makes it very complicated to predict the outcome of the match.

Also because VfL scored half of all league goals in the final quarter of an hour, we see the greatest value in betting on a late goal (after 72:59). The betting odds for Augsburg against Bochum are 1.83, which we offer with four units at Bet365.
