Will Cross beat Gurney again?

The two players have already met twice this calendar year. Tuesday night will be their third match, this time in the 2022 World Darts Championship as Daryl Gurney challenges Rob Cross in a bid to improve his poor record against the Englishman. This year there were already two defeats in two attempts for Gurney.

As expected, the Northern Irish dart player is classified as an underdog by the betting companies. For Rob Cross vs. Daryl Gurney, odds beyond the 2.00 mark are offered for tip 2. If Rob Cross wins, on the other hand, decent betting odds of up to 1.62 are on offer.

For Cross, who was crowned World Champion four years ago, this year’s World Championship started in the “Ally Pally” with the match against Raymond van Barneveld. Although “Voltage” had a weak start into the match, he managed a comeback in the course of the match and a well-deserved win (3:1) against “Barney”.

If the Englishman can build on the last three sets against “Barney”, it is also obvious that Rob Cross will master the sixteenth final against Daryl Gurney. Although Cross did not have the best match coverage (90.38), the world number eleven convinced with a checkout rate of 38.46%.

Rob Cross – Statistics & current form

Rob Cross can breathe a sigh of relief – at least for now. The 2018 World Champion has at least mastered the second round of the 2022 World Darts Championship and thus prevented a lightning knockout – as in the last two years – at the “Ally Pally”. For the first time since 2019 the Englishman is back in the sixteen finals of the PDC World Championship.

The win against Raymond van Barneveld, after all five times World Champion, was nevertheless hard fought. In the meantime Rob Cross was even 0:1 behind but only in the course of the match the Englishman turned up and got his ticket for the round of the last 32 against the mostly harmless “Barney”.

Not only Rob Cross’ 180s were convincing but also his checkout rate. The Englishman hit ten out of 26 attempts on the doubles, so Cross had a double rate of 38,46%. In comparison: Raymond van Barneveld only hit six of 28 doubles and had “only” a rate of 21,43%.

Will Cross remain unbeaten against Gurney?

The match against Daryl Gurney definitely suits Rob Cross – at least with the recent record. The Englishman has already won twice against Gurney this year. Both matches took place in the Players Championship.

In the PC1 there was a clear victory (6:1) for Cross in Bolton. Six months later the Englishman won the PC21 in Barnsley against Gurney (6:5). In the meantime, Cross has been unbeaten against the Northern Irishman for four matches in a row. The last time the 2018 world champion lost to Daryl Gurney was in October 2019.

It is therefore obvious to make a prediction on the Englishman in Cross vs. Gurney this time as well. Especially as Rob Cross has had a promising year so far, including winning the European Championship just two months ago. The checkout quota will be the most important factor against Gurney.

Daryl Gurney – Statistics & Current Form

Just like Rob Cross Daryl Gurney despite being behind still mastered the tournament opener. In the second round of the 2022 World Darts Championship “SuperChin” had a mixed start into the match and missed numerous chances to take the set. In the deciding leg of the first set Gurney even failed to check out a 68 and was punished by Ricky Evans.

But the world number 22 from Northern Ireland ensured a clear balance of power in the following three sets. With an average of 95,90, a total of six 180s and a checkout rate of 42,31% Daryl Gurney deservedly entered the round of the last 32. Against Rob Cross Daryl Gurney aims for the next win.

The Northern Irish dart player wants to qualify for the second time since the World Championship 2017 for the last 16 in the “Ally Pally”. The last time Gurney reached the last 16 was last year. At the 2021 World Cup he even reached the quarter-finals, where Gurney was only eliminated by the eventual tournament winner Gerwyn Price with 4:5.

How many 180s will Gurney throw this time?

The most encouraging thing for Gurney ahead of his match against Rob Cross is his recent 180 haul. Against Ricky Evans, “SuperChin” Gurney scored the maximum points six times – including three 180s in the last set. In the last two sets Gurney also had a commendable average of almost 98.00.

If the 35-year-old builds on his recent statistics, it is at least obvious that “SuperChin” will deliver a match on a par in the last 16. If you want to bet on Cross vs. Gurney, you can get betting odds of up to 2.40 on the Northern Irishman.

Rob Cross – Daryl Gurney Direct Comparison / H2H Record

This is the 19th time these two players have met. Rob Cross leads the head-to-head comparison against Daryl Gurney with a record of 11-1-6. The last time Cross lost a match to Gurney was in October 2019, and since then the Englishman has picked up three wins and a draw. The latter was in the 2020 Premier League, where Cross picked up a point against Gurney despite being 3-0 down.

Rob Cross – Daryl Gurney Tip

Both players were eliminated by Ryan Searle in the Players Championship Finals ahead of the 2022 World Darts Championship. For Gurney the adventure was over in the quarterfinals of the PC Finals 2021, only one round before Rob Cross was eliminated by Searle. So the tournament start for the two top players of the PDC was all the more praiseworthy.

Cross, who already was World Champion in 2018 in the “Ally Pally”, prevailed in his first match in the current World Championship 2022 against Raymond van Barneveld. Daryl Gurney also made a comeback in the tournament opener (3:1).

Because Cross already won twice against Gurney this calendar year, we think the Englishman is stronger than the Northern Irishman this time as well. With a stake of six units, we dare to bet on Cross vs. Gurney at odds of 2.02 on a win by Rob Cross with a lead of at least two sets.

Alternatively, we recommend betting on “More 180s: Rob Cross”. After all, “Voltage” already threw the maximum score seven times against “Barney”
