Do the Red Wings remain a shooting gallery at home?

One thing you can’t deny about the Red Wings right now: That they wouldn’t provide spectacle. Their last home game against the Maple Leafs ended 7:10, the one before that against the Avalanche 2:5. So goals are to be expected again for Tuesday night.

Especially since the Hurricanes, one of the top teams in the league, are coming to Detroit. With 78 points to date, they not only lead the Metropolitan Division, they are also the second-best team in the entire NHL.

The favourite status is therefore clearly on the side of the Canes, who have also won all of their last five games. Thus, not only a high-scoring game is to be expected on Tuesday, but also one that could end a little more clearly.

For Red Wings vs. Hurricanes, our prediction is a Carolina win in which they will score at least four goals. Detroit’s goals against average over their last four home games is 5.5, which also plays into our prediction.

Detroit Red Wings – Statistics & current form

The Red Wings are currently still in a state of flux and it shows. How else could it have happened that a team lets itself get ten goals at home and still thinks it’s on a good path.

Offensively, they can absolutely do that, with 2.89 goals scored per game, they are on a par with the New York Rangers or the Boston Bruins – two very ambitious play-off teams.

Goalies the worst duo in the NHL

Ben the goalies, however, things look quite different. Both newcomer Alex Nedeljkovic in his first season as a starter and oldie Thomas Greiss as a backup are playing subterranean seasons by their standards. Greiss, for example, has increased his goals against average by 0.67 goals within one year.

With 3.37 goals against per game, he is only in a catastrophic 80th place in the league. Nedeljkovic, however, is only a touch better with 3.17 goals against and 71st place, which already sums up the Red Wings’ overall situation. They don’t get much support from this position.

Seider and Larkin are the bright spots in the team

Of course the defenders also have their share in the many goals conceded, but they are often taken to task. This also applies to Moritz Seider, who is one of the best rookies in the league offensively with already 39 scorer points.

So the one or other defensive mistake is gladly forgiven. Offensively, Dylan Larkin makes the best impression so far with 55 scorer points. At the age of 25, he is one of the key players around whom the future Wings roster will be built.

The weak defence, which has been a shooting gallery in recent weeks, is likely to be overwhelmed again against the Canes, which is why we definitely favour a bet on the away team in Detroit vs. Carolina. A -1.5 handicap for the visitors is also a good betting alternative.

Carolina Hurricanes – Statistics & current form

The Hurricanes recorded their fifth win in a row on Sunday with a 2-1 win over the Oilers. They are currently the hottest team in the league and lead the Metropolitan Division with 78 points.

Since they have also played three games less than the second-placed Penguins, anything less than a division win would be a surprise. Even the best record in the entire Eastern Conference is likely at this point.

Offense and defence top

In terms of offense/defense ratio, there is definitely no team that can match Carolina, not even the Avalanche. Because offensively, the Canes rank a strong sixth with 3.48 goals scored per game.

Even more impressive, however, are only 2.35 goals against per game – a number that clearly leads the NHL. Their rivals in the battle for the league’s best record from Colorado, for example, allow 2.81 goals against.

Also strong on Special Teams

There are, however, other statistics that prove the Canes are a force to be reckoned with this year. For example, they rank 5th on the power play with a 25.1% success rate, and they even rank first in penalty killing by a wide margin with an incredible 90.2% success rate.

These numbers show that they are also the heavy favourites on Tuesday (Detroit has the seventh weakest power play and the eighth weakest penalty killing in the NHL). For Red Wings vs Hurricanes, the odds on Carolina -1.5 are highly recommended.

Detroit Red Wings – Carolina Hurricanes Direct comparison / H2H-balance

Last year these two teams played each other a full nine times, with the surprisingly close overall record of 5:4  for Carolina. The only duel this season, however, went clearly to the Hurricanes with 5:3 in December.

That could be the result on Tuesday, possibly with a goal or two more on the Canes’ side. The Red Wings conceded an average of 5.5 goals in their last four home games – and that against weaker opponents.

Thus, the odds on a clear Canes victory are just as promising for Detroit vs. Carolina as on many goals by them or on general over-points. Because the Red Wings also have their strengths more in the offense than in the defense.

Detroit Red Wings – Carolina Hurricanes Tip

The Canes are ahead of the Red Wings statistically in really all aspects. Not even in the faceoffs (53.7% to 50.6%) does Detroit have a chance against Carolina. In this respect, we don’t find any reason to believe anything for the Wings here.

For Detroit against Carolina, a bet on the Hurricanes + Over 5.5 goals is therefore our No.1 betting option. The question is basically whether handicap bets or other options are to be preferred. However, due to the top value, we opt for this combination bet.

Alternatively, single bets on over 5.5 total goals are recommended. Both teams are in the top 20 teams offensively, Carolina even in the top 6. Together they score 6.37 goals per game, which makes a bet on over 5.5 goals very worthwhile.
