De Minaur on his way back into the top ten

The wheat is slowly but surely being separated from the chaff at the French Open 2024. If we go strictly by the seeding list, then the top 16 in the world rankings should still be in the tournament. That doesn’t quite fit in the men’s singles competition, but our Alex de Minaur vs Daniil Medvedev tip fits in perfectly with this pattern. So this round of 16 is anything but a surprise

Nevertheless, it has to be said that reaching this round is something special for the Australian. In his seven previous appearances at Stade Roland Garros, Alex de Minaur has never made it past the second round. Before the start of the tournament, the man from Down Under had a record of 3:7 victories at the French Open. With a win on Monday, he could even out this record, at least for the time being.

However, the prediction in the duel between Alex de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev is that the Russian will win. Alex de Minaur will probably be rubbing his own eyes in amazement several times these days when he looks at the results lists for the French Open. Prior to the current edition of the tournament in Paris, the Australian had celebrated just three victories at the Stade Roland Garros and never made it past the second round. The round of 16 is therefore already a great success and perhaps that will be enough to get him back into the top ten of the world rankings

This was actually not to be expected in this form, because if the Australian has left a positive calling card in a tournament, then never on clay. The 25-year-old has won eight titles on the ATP Tour so far in his career. He has also lost the same number of finals and not a single one of these tournaments has been played on clay.

We therefore think that his adventure at the French Open will also come to an end in the short term. In our opinion, the only way to be successful in the match between Alex de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev is with the odds on a win for the Russian. However, the Australian delivered a very decent performance in the Stade Roland Garros last week.

In the first two rounds, he held his own against the American Alex Michelsen and Jaume Munar in three sets each. In the third round, the Australian then faced a match at eye level. It has already been widely reported that Daniil Medvedev doesn’t like playing on clay. But if we compare the Russian with his Australian opponent in this respect, then the 28-year-old is a real expert on red clay. After all, he won his first major title on this surface last year at the Masters tournament in Rome

However, he hasn’t been able to pull out any trees at the French Open so far. Before this year, Daniil Medvedev had competed at the French Open seven times and had to pull out after his opening match five times. In 2021, he made it to the quarter-finals once and that’s exactly where he wants to be again this year. Just one more win is needed to reach the last eight.

The Russian hasn’t had to stretch himself too much in his three matches so far. He has also played all his matches on the big courts and was therefore not affected by the rain interruptions. In the first round, Daniil Medvedev only had problems with the German Dominik Köpfer in the third set, but still went on to win 3:1.

In the second match, the Russian was on the verge of winning the second set against the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic before the latter had to retire injured. The number five then needed four sets again in the third round on Saturday against Tomas Machac from the Czech Republic, who was difficult to play against. We therefore think it is conceivable to predict that Alex de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev will play more than 3.5 sets
