Are the Reds keeping up with Europe?

For Liverpool Football Club, the race for the international places is getting more and more complicated. The Reds are already six points behind the sixth-placed team, although they have played two matches less than the first team.

Nevertheless, coach Jürgen Klopp’s team cannot afford many more slip-ups. The fact is that a season without a European Cup would be an absolute catastrophe for LFC’s aspirations.

In order to reduce the gap to the top, an important away game awaits at Elland Road on Monday evening at the end of the 31st matchday. Looking at the betting odds, between Leeds and Liverpool, suggests that betting on the away win is the most plausible betting option. The three-way market is currently offering a 1.75, which equates to an implied probability of occurrence of 57%.

Surely, the 2020 champions’ favouritism is also due to the home side’s recent minus performance in their last home game to date. The relegation-threatened club from West Yorkshire went down 1:5 against Crystal Palace.

It will be interesting to see whether the Whites show a reaction to this bitter defeat or whether a new negative series is on the horizon. In our eyes, alternative two is even more likely, which is why our Leeds vs. Liverpool prediction tends in the direction of Mo Salah and Co.

Leeds – Statistics & current form

Many indications are that Leeds United will have to fight to stay in the league this season. At the moment, however, the Peacocks are above the line and, in 16th place, are two points clear of the first relegation spot. In the best case scenario, this cushion could more than double.

However, it seems unlikely that the team of the Spanish coach Javi Gracia will defeat the nominal top team from Liverpool in front of a home crowd. Against Crystal Palace, the Whites lost 1:5 and disgraced themselves to the bone. This defeat was not necessarily announced, as the direct rivals from Nottingham had been defeated in their own stadium beforehand.

Leeds concede too many goals

But it is definitely noticeable that the relegation candidate has conceded too many goals in recent weeks. In the three games so far in April 2023, they have already conceded ten (!) goals, which is more than any other Premier League club.

Five clean sheets in the past 35 league games underline the defensive vulnerability, which could also be a target for the Reds. That is one of the reasons why our first approach is to check the odds on the visitors’ treble between Leeds and Liverpool. Particularly in view of the fact that LFC have not lost any of their last five guest games at Elland Road. Nevertheless, a first Leeds double over Liverpool since 2000/01 beckons.

Last Leeds games:

  • 09/04/2023 –  Leeds 1 – 5 Crystal Palace
  • 05/04/2023 – Leeds 2 – 1 Nottingham Forest
  • 01/04/2023 – Arsenal FC 4 – 1 Leeds
  • 18/03/2023 – Wolverhampton 2 – 4 Leeds
  • 11/03/2023 – Leeds 2 – 2 Brighton

Liverpool – Statistics & current form

Liverpool have had to play three top games recently. While the away game at Manchester City was lost 1:4, the Reds then scored at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea (0:0) and also earned a respectable 2:2 draw at home last week against leaders Arsenal. The performance in the second half in particular should serve as an encouragement for the final spurt in the Premier League.

If Klopp’s team can continue their courageous performance at Elland Road, it is quite realistic that the odds on the visitors’ three-goal win in the Leeds vs Liverpool match will pay off. This is despite the fact that the Reds have now been without a win for five matches in the competition. By the way, six consecutive games without a win has never been achieved under Jürgen Klopp!

Hopes rest on Leeds expert Salah

For the sake of completeness, however, it should not be forgotten that LFC have found it extremely difficult to produce good results away from home so far this season. An average of just 0.87 points per away game has been recorded. There have been 13 points in 15 away games. This is the weakest result since 1992/93, but it was often due to the poor use of chances that the bottom line was not higher.

Because we are convinced that the two goals scored against Arsenal have given the cult club new hope and at the same time that the visiting team has more individual quality, we are leaning towards a prediction on the Reds ahead of the Leeds vs. In addition to the simple away win on the three-way market, the away win including at least two goals can also be envisaged. For the particularly risk-averse bettors, a 2.25 beckons for Salah and Co. to score in both halves.

Speaking of Salah, the Egyptian winger has scored a staggering seven goals in his five appearances for Liverpool against Leeds United. No other player has scored more times for the Reds against the Whites in the Premier League than Mo Salah. Together with Gakpo and Nunez, there is enough individual class that will surely get some chances against the host’s weak defence.

Leeds – Liverpool Direct comparison / H2H balance

If Leeds United were to remain in the English top flight, there would be the 99th and 100th duels between these clubs next season. Now, however, the 98th clash is on the cards for the first time. With 51 wins compared to 23 defeats and 23 draws, the Reds lead the direct comparison very clearly.

Among other things, LFC did not lose any of the last five away games at Elland Road. In the first leg, however, Leeds surprisingly took all three points from Anfield Road. It is only the second time in league history that the Peacocks could win the first and second legs against the multiple champions in the same season.

Leeds – Liverpool Tip

Monday evening holds one more straggler in store in the Premier League. The 31st matchday in England’s Beletage will be completed with the match Leeds vs. Liverpool. According to the betting odds, the visitors are quite clearly favoured and this despite the fact that the Reds have not won any of their last five games across the competition and have had their problems away from home throughout the season.

However, the chances of a positive result against the Whites are still good in our eyes, after all Leeds lost 1:5 against Crystal Palace last time out and have conceded ten goals in their last three Premier League games. The record against LFC does not read particularly promising either. They have been without a home win in a direct encounter for five matches now.

We therefore try it in the run-up to the match Leeds vs. Liverpool with the tip on the away win, which we also combine with the Over 1.5 to get even more exciting odds.
