Augsburg still harmless?
From Tuesday to Thursday, the focus was on the group stages in the three European competitions. From Friday onwards, it’s back to the daily grind, which is particularly exciting for Werder Bremen and FC Augsburg because they were only allowed to act as spectators at international level. The team from the Weser is desperate to open the sixth matchday of the Bundesliga with a win.
The Green-Whites have been waiting a very long time for a home win in the top flight, of course also due to relegation and a year in the second division. The SVW’s last Bundesliga win at the Weserstadion came in February 2021, against Eintracht Frankfurt. It is high time that this series now comes to an end. FCA should be a predestined opponent for this.
In the Bundesliga table, Ole Werner’s team is in a very good eighth place as a promoted team. Eight points from five games are a very respectable result. The Fuggerstädter are in the relegation place with only three points. Therefore, you don’t have to think long to predict a home win in the match between Werder Bremen and Augsburg.
In the last 18 meetings between these two clubs in the top flight, there has never been a draw. That’s why we don’t recommend betting on a draw between Werder Bremen and FC Augsburg on Friday.
Werder Bremen – Statistics & current form
It could be Niclas Füllkrug’s game. With five goals in the first five match days, the Bremen attacker is joint top of the goalscoring list with Sheraldo Becker. He also has fond memories of FC Augsburg. In March 2012, he scored his first Bundesliga goal against FCA and also his first brace in the top flight, but then in a Hannover 96 shirt, against the Fuggerstädter.
Dangerous in the final phase
We can imagine Bremen taking an early lead and adding to it in the closing stages. Seven of the twelve goals were scored by the 23rd minute, the remaining five goals came after the 86th minute. In between, there is a lull in the SVW attack. In general, however, the Bremen team is very dangerous. In every Bundesliga match this season, Ole Werner’s team scored at least twice.
After FC Bayern, the promoted team has the second-best offence in the league. There were also two Bremen goals to cheer last weekend. Werder Bremen played away at VfL Bochum and until the ominous 86th minute the score was still 0:0. Once again the SVW was on the spot in the final phase. Niclas Füllkrug provided the two goals with a brace for a 2-0 away win.
Maybe it makes sense to play the odds on more than 2.5 goals between Werder Bremen and Augsburg. In terms of personnel, things don’t look quite so good for the Bremen side at the moment. Especially the loss of Leonardo Bittencourt hurts. In addition, Ole Werner will have to do without Dikeni Salifou, Jean-Manuel Mbom and Eren Dinkci on Friday. Lee Buchanan returned to team training during the week.
Predicted line-up of Werder Bremen:
Pavlenka – Veljkovic, Friedl, Pieper – Groß – Jung, Schmid, Schmidt, Weiser – Füllkrug, Ducksch – Coach: Werner

03/09/2022 – VfL Bochum 0 – 2 Werder Bremen

Augsburg – Statistics & current form
When you bring in a nine coach, you usually give him some time to shape the team. In the first and second Bundesliga, however, there are numerous examples, including this season, that a false start can quickly lead to a reorientation in this position and the coach being shown the door early on. Enrico Maaßen is no longer free from criticism at FC Augsburg either.
Pipeline of the puppeteers
After five games, just one win is not what the FCA bosses had in mind. In the last three games, the Puppeteers conceded three defeats. Four defeats in a row would mean setting a negative club record. From our point of view, it doesn’t sound like you now have to make a prediction on an away win in the Werder Bremen vs Augsburg clash.
Last week Hertha BSC were guests at the WWK-Arena for the basement duel and after the 0:2 defeat there were clear expressions of displeasure from the crowd. This was mainly due to the fact that Augsburg’s performance seemed lifeless. Scoring chances were scarce and all in all, this game was no encouragement for a completely different attitude in Bremen.
Augsburg’s injury list is getting longer rather than shorter in recent weeks. Enrico Maaßen will again have to do without numerous players on Friday at the Weser. Reece Oxford, Felix Uduokhai, Frederik Winther, Niklas Dorsch, Tobias Strobl, Arne Maier, Frederik Jensen and Noah Joel Sarenren Bazee continue to be among the injured.
Predicted line-up of Augsburg:
Gikiewicz – Gouweleeuw, Bauer, Gumny – Baumgartlinger, Gruezo – Pedersen, Rexhbecaj, Caligiuri – Demirovic, Berisha – Coach: Maaßen
Last matches played by Augsburg:
Bundesliga
04/09/2022 – Augsburg 0 – 2 Hertha BSC
27/08/2022 – Hoffenheim 1 – 0 Augsburg
20/08/2022 – Augsburg 1 – 2 Mainz 05
13/08/2022 – Bayer Leverkusen 1 – 2 Augsburg
06/08/2022 – Augsburg 0 – 4 SC Freiburg
Werder Bremen – Augsburg Direct comparison / H2H-balance
24 times the teams of Werder Bremen and FC Augsburg have crossed paths to date. 20 duels were played in the Bundesliga and four times they met in the DFB Cup. In the direct comparison, the Bremen team has a narrow lead with 11:10 victories. Only three times did they part with a draw. In the last 18 Bundesliga matches, there has not been a division of points.
In addition, the home team has always won the last five games. This was also the case in Bremen’s relegation season, when they initially won the home match at the Weserstadion 2:0. In the return match, FCA retained the upper hand in front of their own crowd. After goals from Rani Khedira and Daniel Caligiuri, the Fuggerstädter also won 2-0 for their part.
Werder Bremen – Augsburg tip
Werder Bremen are in a good mood. The team from the Weser has made a very good start to the season with eight points. With twelve goals, they also have the second-best offence and Niclas Füllkrug is the top scorer with five goals. That sounds like a lot of goals and probably also a home win, except that Bremen have been waiting since February 2021 for a success in their own arena.
Augsburg, however, should now be the right opponent to end this streak, as not much is going right for the Fuggerstädtern at the moment.
We actually also expect more than 2.5 goals to be scored, because when the Green-Whites are on the pitch, it’s rapping this season. On the other hand, we also think it’s conceivable that Ole Werner’s eleven will win this match without conceding a goal. In the end, we decided to play the betting odds on an easy home win between Werder Bremen and Augsburg.
