Will Animisova end Tan’s fairytale Wimbledon run?
The sport of tennis sometimes makes crazy history. At the most prestigious Grand Slam of the year in Wimbledon, there is once again a lady who has risen from the ashes like a phoenix and has surprisingly caused a sensation so far. We are talking about the French player Harmony Tan, who is serving for the first time at Church Road and was able to immediately bring Serena Williams to her knees in her first match.
After two more wins, the 24-year-old has now already made it to the last 16, where she will have to face Amanda Anisimova on Monday. Her opponent, who is four years younger than her, eliminated co-favourite Cory Gauff in three sets at the weekend and has put herself in the extended circle of title contenders on the basis of her performance. Against this background, it is understandable that Anisimova is favoured against Tan according to the odds.
The only thing the US player sometimes lacks is consistency in the course of a match, which is why it could well be an option to make a prediction on many games in the round of 16 duel between Anisimova and Tan. Furthermore, it is conceivable to bet that the match will go the full distance. We wouldn’t even rule out a surprise in advance, although the probability of a win by the world number 25 is much higher.
Amanda Anisimova – Statistics & current form
Even as a junior, there were signs that Amanda Anisimova could eventually play a very good role in women’s tennis. The daughter of Russian parents who immigrated to the USA in 1998, she was ranked second in the junior world rankings at her best and already had some success. Her first years as a full professional on the tour were also promising.
In the meantime, the current 20-year-old has already made it to position 25 in the world rankings. In 2019, she reached the semi-finals of the French Open and she has also reached the second week of the Australian Open twice (round of 16 in 2019 and 2022). The 6ft tall right-hander has now reached the same at Wimbledon.
Anisimova must minimise the number of unforced errors
Thanks to three wins over Yue Yuan and her two compatriots Lauren Davis and Cori Gauff, Animisova has reached the last 16 for the first time in the English capital and has a good chance of advancing to the quarter-finals on Monday. Ahead of the clash between Anisimova and Tan, far lower odds are being offered on the ladies from New Jersey.
Her third-round performance against French Open finalist Cori Gauff in particular underlined the 20-year-old’s good form on the one hand, as she won five of her six matches on grass in 2022 and suffered her only defeat at the preparatory tournament in Bad Homburg in the quarter-finals against former world number one Simona Halep. On the other hand, it became clear that the aggressive and offensive style of play fits very well on the green surface.
The only thing the promising talent needs to get a better grip on is the many simple mistakes and the weak phases in the course of a match. Against Gauff, for example, she was already leading 4:1 in the tie break of the first set, only to lose it after losing six points in a row. 40 unforced errors against Gauff, 29 of the same kind against Lauren Davis and 22 at the start against China’s Yuan lead to the momentum switching back and forth again and again. So we don’t expect an outright success against Harmony Tan either, but a duel on equal terms with many ups and downs as well as some games.
Harmony Tan – Statistics & current form
Only the real insiders might have known Harmony Tan in the run-up to Wimbledon 2022. The Frenchwoman has never been higher than 95th in the world rankings, has only taken part in a Grand Slam three times before and has always failed in the second main round at the latest. However, the 24-year-old has been winning the hearts of many fans for about a week on her debut at Church Road in London.
In the first main round, Tan beat Serena Williams in three hard-fought sets and celebrated the biggest victory of her career. The performance against the multiple Grand Slam winner and long-time world number one was by no means a flash in the pan, however, as she also proved her impressive form in the two subsequent matches against Sara Sorribes Tormo and Katie Boulter, winning both in two sets.
Continues her personal Cinderella story?
The performance against local hero Katie Boulter, who defeated last year’s finalist Karolina Pliskova in the previous round, was particularly impressive. The world No. 115 gave up just two games in her 6-1, 6-1 victory. The Frenchwoman went into the match as the underdog, won over 80% of her first serve points, did not have to defend a single break point and only committed five unforced errors with 16 winners.
Because the statistics read so well, we can well imagine betting on Monday’s Anisimova vs. Tan clash that the right-hander from Paris will once again win at least one set.
Amanda Anisimova – Harmony Tan Direct comparison / H2H record
The only head-to-head duel between these two ladies was now over three years ago. At the end of May 2019, Amanda Anisimova won the first round match at the French Open on clay with 6:3 and 6:1. The second match will now also take place in the context of a Grand Slam, but this time on grass. The match is also expected to be a lot closer than it was then.
Amanda Anisimova – Harmony Tan Tip
The women’s round of 16 matches will be played at Wimbledon on Sunday and Monday. Many favourites have already had to pull out of the tournament. Amanda Anisimova and Harmony Tan were also able to get rid of highly rated opponents. The American won against Cori Gauff in the third round, Tan knocked Serena Williams out of the competition in the first round.
Now it comes to a direct duel between Animisova and Tan. Betting odds of 1.30 imply quite clear advantages for the only 20-year-old world number 25, who has reached the round of the last 16 for the first time in London, but has problems now and then to show consistently good tennis. Many simple errors and weak phases determine her game, which otherwise lives from outstanding baseline shots.
Harmony Tan, meanwhile, has been convincing all along the line so far and celebrated straightforward victories against Boulter or Sorribe’s Tormo. Her serve works very well, she is confident from the baseline and the Frenchwoman also seems to be at her physical best. That is one of the reasons why the supposed favourite from New Jersey is in for a tough task.
We have therefore decided to bet on at least 20 games between Animisova and Tan
