Ends the Wolfsburg bankruptcy series on Tuesday?
With VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FC Köln, two losers of the last matchday will face each other on Tuesday evening. While the Rhinelanders already lost 2-0 at home to Augsburg on Friday and thus had an extra day to regenerate, the Lower Saxons suffered the next setback in Saturday night’s match against VfB Stuttgart (2-0).
The decisive question before the direct duel is therefore who will get back on track faster. According to the Wolfsburg vs. Cologne odds, the advantage lies with the car cities, who have now lost five games in a row and have recently put in a shockingly weak performance.
But because the “Effzeh” have not been able to pull up any trees away from home this season and have only won one of their last eight Bundesliga games, it is not really possible to place a bet on the outcome of the match between Wolfsburg and Cologne. If you still want to do it, you might want to keep an eye on the draw (X). The odds here are 3.55 at the top, although neither of the coaches would be completely satisfied with a point.
Wolfsburg – Statistics & current form
Florian Kohfeldt’s tenure at VfL Wolfsburg got off to an extremely promising start. The Green-Whites were initially able to win three games under their new coach, twice in the Bundesliga and once in the Champions League. In the meantime, however, the former Bremen coach’s clean slate has become so stained that it would have to be subjected to a real laundry marathon.
In addition to the bitter Champions League exit a week ago, when they lost their home match against Lille and thus lost the possibility of reaching the last 16, their form at national level must also be described as worrying. In the last four games, they have only managed a measly one point. Recently, they even suffered three defeats in a row, all with at least a two-goal difference.
Wolfsburg with five defeats in a row
Wolfsburg’s home record is also extremely weak, with only one win, one draw and four defeats in the last six games, which is definitely an indication of why we do not see a home win forecast between Wolfsburg and Cologne as a promising betting option.
More interesting are the betting odds that the defence will once again be confronted with problems. In eight games in Germany’s top division, VfL have always conceded at least two goals. The 22 goals conceded after 15 matchdays is the weakest total since 2016/17, so it is definitely worth considering betting on a few goals on Tuesday evening. For example, the “BTS” as well as the “Over 2.5” is quite suitable.
Hope that the offense, which has often seemed harmless in recent weeks, will gain momentum this time around is incidentally inspired by the fact that the Wolves usually enjoy playing their upcoming opponents from Domstadt. They have not lost any of their last eight home games against 1. FC Köln and have even won all three of their most recent home games in the Bundesliga. In terms of personnel, the injured Mehmedi, Philipp, Paulo Otavio, Schlager and William are still missing.
Predicted Wolfsburg line-up:
Casteels – Baku, Bornauw, Lacroix, Roussillon – Arnold, Guilavogui – Steffen, Gerhardt – Weghorst, L. Nmecha
Germany Köln – Statistics & current form
Actually throughout the entire season, the mood at 1. FC Köln has been one of euphoria, hope and confidence. Just before Christmas, however, the Rhinelanders have to make sure that this does not change abruptly. Because only one win was recorded from the last eight games and the performances were no longer as fiery as at the beginning of the season, there has been some criticism recently.
Incidentally, the ongoing crisis of form at the “Effzeh” is also reflected in the standings. With 19 points, the cathedral cities have fallen back to twelfth place. Particularly piquant: the lead over the relegation play-off places is just three points. Furthermore, the coaching team led by Steffen Baumgart should think about the fact that his men are actually the team with the fewest wins in the league behind Fürth and Bielefeld.
When will Cologne get a grip on the defence?
This circumstance is again primarily due to the too vulnerable defence. They are the only team in 2021/22 that has not yet managed to keep things tight at the back. Not a single clean sheet, but instead 25 goals conceded (14 of them away from home) are proof of the unstable defence, which can of course be used as an argument to justify the odds on both sides scoring in the Wolfsburg vs Cologne clash.
From a statistical point of view, an away coup for the twelfth-placed team in the table is also out of the question; after all, there has not been a single win away from home in seven attempts in the current season. Only twice in their Bundesliga history have the Rhinelanders been without an away win at this point in a season. Both times, in 2003/04 and 2017/18, they were relegated to the second division at the end of the year…
The absence of two key players should not be underestimated. Regular keeper Timo Horn will again be replaced by Marvin Schwäbe and Enes Skhiri, an important centre player, will be absent due to illness. Tony Modeste can play instead. And that is a good thing, after all, he was involved in eight goals in ten Bundesliga games against VfL Wolfsburg – more than against any other club.
Predicted line-up of Cologne:
Schwäbe – Schmitz, Kilian, Czichos, Hector – Ljubicic, Özcan – Thielmann, Duda, Uth – Modeste
Wolfsburg – Cologne Direct Comparison / H2H Balance
Of 30 Bundesliga games against VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FC Köln have only won six. Especially in the Autostadt, the Rhinelanders rarely had anything to win, with ten defeats, four draws and only one victory. The Geißböcke have also lost their last three away games at the Volkswagen Arena. In total, Cologne have failed to win eight away matches in Lower Saxony. Only in five of the 15 VfL home games against the “Effzeh” did both teams not score.
Wolfsburg – Cologne Tip
Two teams that have recently had considerable problems bringing the potential already hinted at onto the pitch face each other in a direct duel on Tuesday evening. Wolfsburg welcomes Cologne and is even considered the favourite according to the betting odds.
This assessment is surprising, as the Wolves have lost five games in a row, have only won one of their last eight games in the Bundesliga and have conceded two or more goals eight times this season. Especially under Kohfeldt, the defence has been anything but stable lately.
This is one of the reasons why our betting tips between Wolfsburg and Cologne are that both teams will score goals. The Geißböcke are still without a clean sheet in 2021/22 and are always up for a spectacle. Despite the possible lack of confidence on both sides, there is a lot to be said for an encounter with a goal or two.
We play the 1.70 in the top with six units. Alternative betting suggestions are a draw after 90 minutes or goals from both teams in the second half.
