Will the Greek continue his recent winning ways?
Stefanos Tsitsipas has reached the semifinals in three of the last four editions of the Australian Open, but failed to make it out unscathed in all three attempts. With three straight 3-0 victories, the Greek has already made it to the last 16 this year. He needs two more wins to be among the best four athletes again. In the run-up to the duel between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner, the betting on his fourth victory is certainly favourable.
After all, the Greek clearly leads the direct comparison against the South Tyrolean with four wins from five duels. A year ago, Tsitsipas already managed a smooth 3:0 triumph over the man from Sesto at the Australian Open – back then in the quarter-finals of the tennis tournament in Melbourne. Consequently, our prediction for this year’s Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Jannik Sinner goes to the Athenian’s victory as well.
However, it could well come to grief to write off the strong Jannik Sinner prematurely. Already in the third round against Márton Fucsovics, the man from Sesto was trailing 0:2 before he managed a strong comeback to win 3:2. Nevertheless, the Greek high-flyer is of a completely different calibre, which is why we ultimately bet on Stefanos Tsitsipas advancing.
Unless higher odds are offered for this betting option at short notice, which can be checked via our linked overview, it is advisable to apply a small handicap of -3.5 games on the Greek for slightly better quotes. This should still be very coherent for most wins with a set loss (e.g. 3:1).
Stefanos Tsitsipas – Statistics & current form
Current ranking in the world rankings: 4
Position in the seedings: 3
The 24-year-old Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas has only been on the ATP Tour since 2017, but made his first splash in his second season by reaching the final of the 2018 Roger’s Cup.
Since he then entered the top 10 in 2019 and surprisingly won the ATP Finals 2019 at the end of the year, it is impossible to imagine the ATP world rankings without the Athenian. Stef will also start at the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2023 season as the world number four seed.
With three straight 3-0 wins into the last 16
No wonder the playmaking Athenian is also a mainstay in the Australian Open 2023 overall winner forecast, which he has done impressive justice to so far. In three matches against Quentin Halys, Rinky Hijikata and Tallon Griekspoor, the 24-year-old remained without losing a set.
The world number three also followed up his strong performance at the United Cup when he won all four singles for Team Greece. All in all, he has seven wins from seven singles matches this year, which is why the betting odds on Stefanos Tsitsipas against Jannik Sinner are clearly in favour of the Greek.
Only two service games surrendered in the course of the tournament
Absolutely impressive is also the confidence the 24-year-old exuded on his own serve. Only in the opening game did he seem unfocused here and there. Against an overstrained French qualifier, six double faults and two lost service games could not change anything in the 3:0 victory.
In the following two rounds, Stef even stopped the few errors on his own serve. He conceded a total of six break points to his opponents in rounds two and three combined, with the Athenian defending all six and thus having converted every single service game since the opening game.
Jannik Sinner – Statistics & current form
Current world ranking: 16
Position in the seedings: 15
South Tyrol’s Jannik Sinner, 21, found himself on the ATP Tour with a bang in 2019 when he capped a strong first year by winning the overall title at the Next Generation ATP Finals in Italy.
Since then, the Sesto native has also steadily made up ground in the ATP world rankings. In 2021, he even advanced to the ATP Finals as the world’s tenth-ranked player. The only thing that hasn’t worked out yet for the shooting star is his first Major title.
At least in the last 16 at sixth Grand Slam tournament in a row
At Grand Slams in particular, Jannik Sinner, who was responsible for two defeats of high-flyer Carlos Alcaraz in the 2022 calendar year, has recently been outstanding.
At three of the four Grand Slams in 2022, the athlete from Sesto was among the best eight athletes. The only exception was the French Open, where he reached the round of 16. In Down Under, the 21-year-old is already among the 16 best players again, for which he recently made a crazy comeback and defeated Márton Fucsovics 3:2 in a match lasting three hours and 33 minutes after being down 2:0 in the first set.
Win rate of 72.7% at the Australian Open
In the round of 16 between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner, a bet on the South Tyrolean advancing again is by no means out of the question, although the youngster will have to make an effort against the Greek, against whom he already lost 3-0 in Melbourne a year ago.
With a strong annual record of five wins from six singles matches and an Australian Open win rate of 72.7% in the men’s singles with eight wins from eleven matches, the player from Sesto has nothing to hide. And after all, out of 30 duels with opponents from the current Top 10, Jannik Sinner has already won nine matches.
Stefanos Tsitsipas – Jannik Sinner Direct comparison / H2H-balance
Head to head: 4:1
There have been five meetings between the two players so far and with four wins Stefanos Tsitsipas leads the direct comparison very clearly. Four of the five matches took place on clay. However, the Greek also won the only hard-court duel so far in the Australian Open 2022 smoothly and clearly with 3:0.
Stefanos Tsitsipas – Jannik Sinner Tip
When it comes to Stefanos Tsitsipas against Jannik Sinner, the prediction has to take into account that the world number four from Greece already managed to stop a strong run of the South Tyrolean in Melbourne a year ago with a convincing 3-0 win in the quarter-finals. It is certainly impressive that the 21-year-old has now reached at least the last 16 in the sixth Grand Slam tournament in a row. But once again, Stefanos Tsitsipas could be too big for the man from Sesto.
Not only has the Greek not lost a set during the tournament and only dropped two service games in his opening match, but Stefanos Tsitsipas also has a total of seven wins from seven singles matches in 2023.
