Will history repeat itself at Roland Garros?
The ranks have thinned out at Roland Garros and the real heavyweights will now clash in the quarter-finals. The duel between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Carlos Alcaraz – we provide betting tips and odds in this article – is a rematch of last year’s quarter-final. Back then, the Spaniard beat the Greek in three sets. Will it be as clear-cut a year later?
At least the favorite is clearly identifiable, as the young Spaniard has always won the previous five meetings between the two athletes. However, Carlito has also had slight problems over the course of the tournament and dropped a set for the first time in the second round against qualifier Jesper de Jong. Accordingly, the forecast for Stefanos Tsitsipas against Carlos Alcaraz is that it could be a rather long match
The advantage of freshness is clearly on the Spaniard’s side, as Stefanos Tsitsipas will not only be competing in the men’s singles at the French Open 2024, but also in the doubles. On the one hand, he is still competing in the men’s doubles with his brother Petros Tsitsipas. On the other hand, he is also competing in the mixed doubles with his girlfriend Paula Badosa. In other words, a triple burden that clearly favors another victory for the Spaniard as the match progresses.
Nevertheless, we find the greatest value in betting on a match that tends to be longer. We recommend betting on over 34.5 games
Stefanos Tsitsipas – Statistics & current form
Current position in the world rankings: 9
Position in the seeding list: 9
The 25-year-old Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently in his eighth season as a professional tennis player. The current ninth-ranked player in the world has already achieved many a major success. The Athenian has already won three Masters tournaments – all three on clay.
His biggest triumph to date came at the ATP Finals in 2019, when he secured the unofficial world championship in men’s tennis. “Stef” stormed into the grand final at the French Open in 2021, where he was beaten 2:3 by Novak Djokovic after leading 2:0 in sets
Stefanos Tsitsipas with a strong year overall
The fact that the Greek generally enjoys playing on clay is evident from the fact that he has won five of his twelve singles titles on the ATP Tour to date (including one title on the ATP Challenger Tour) on this surface. Just this April, Stef triumphed again at the Monte-Carlo Masters when he swept aside Casper Ruud 2:0 in the final (6:1 and 6:4).
With his four largely unchallenged victories at the French Open 2024 (two 3-0, two 3-1), the Athenian already has 28 wins from 37 singles matches played in the 2024 calendar year. The 1.93-metre player is accordingly confident going into this quarter-final
Stefanos Tsitsipas is involved in three competitions
He still has a score to settle with his Spanish opponent, whom he lost 3-0 in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros a year ago. However, there is not much to suggest that Stefanos Tsitsipas will win against Carlos Alcaraz, who has been beaten by the young Spaniard in all five of his previous singles matches.
It is also particularly problematic that Stef believes he has to dance at all weddings at this year’s French Open. He is competing in the men’s doubles with his brother Petros Tsitsipas, while he is also competing in the mixed doubles with his girlfriend Paula Badosa. In the second week of the tournament at the latest, this is likely to be too much of a strain to keep up at the highest level…
Carlos Alcaraz – Statistics & current form
Current position in the world rankings: 3
Position in the seeding list: 3
The 21-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz has already celebrated groundbreaking successes on the ATP Tour at a really young age. In 2022, the year of his breakthrough, he not only won a major title at two Masters tournaments, the Miami Open and the Madrid Open, but was even crowned Grand Slam winner for the first time at the 2022 US Open.
Successes that he has been able to build on consistently so far. In 2023, he won the Indian Wells Open and again the Madrid Open before adding the Wimbledon Championships trophy at Grand Slam level. And in 2024, “Carlito” defended his title at the Indian Wells Open, taking his tally to seven major titles. He also won six more titles on the ATP Tour at smaller tournaments in the ATP 250 and ATP 500 categories
A repeat of last year?
Although seven of his 13 title wins have come on his prized clay court, the player from El Palmar has yet to reach a final, at least at the French Open. However, after reaching the third round on his debut in 2021 and the quarter-finals a year later, the self-confessed Real Madrid fan did reach the semi-finals last year.
Back then, the 21-year-old eliminated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals. Now history could repeat itself. Basically, Carlito’s French Open record also reads very well. Carlos Alcaraz has won 15 of the 18 singles matches he has played at Roland Garros
Carlos Alcaraz with a confident run
Consequentially, the bookmakers’ odds for Stefanos Tsitsipas against Carlos Alcaraz are clearly in his favor, especially as the world number three has only dropped a single set on his way to his third French Open quarter-final.
Most recently, the Spaniard rolled past Félix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 21) 3-0 in just two hours and 16 minutes. Particularly impressive: While Carlito himself won 49 percent of return points, he only conceded a total of five break points against himself, four of which he fended off. As a result, he only conceded one of his 13 service games against the strong Canadian in the round of 16
Stefanos Tsitsipas – Carlos Alcaraz Direct comparison / H2H result
Head to head: 0:5
The two athletes have faced each other five times so far, with Carlos Alcaraz coming out on top five times. A year ago, the Spaniard ended Stefanos Tsitsipas’ run in the quarter-finals of the French Open with a smooth 3-0 victory (6-2, 6-1, 7-6) in just 29 games
Stefanos Tsitsipas – Carlos Alcaraz tip
The bookmakers’ odds for Stefanos Tsitsipas against Carlos Alcaraz are very clearly in favor of the Spaniard, which is not surprising given the very one-sided head-to-head comparison. A year ago, the Spaniard dispatched his Greek opponent 3-0 in the quarter-finals of the French Open. However, after both players have sold themselves very expensively in the tournament so far, it could be a little tighter a year later
There is a lot of value in predicting that this high-caliber quarter-final between two current top 10 players between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Carlos Alcaraz will go the distance. As a result, we recommend betting on over 34.5 games, which does not categorically rule out a three-set decision in the event of tiebreaks.
