Wawrinka will have to give up against Monfils

Notwithstanding the fact that Stan Wawrinka has already passed his peak, the Swiss is still not to be underestimated. The three-time Grand Slam champion has made a successful start to the tournament at the grass-court classic in Wimbledon and is now aiming for his next victory. The showdown against Gaël Monfils is scheduled for the second round.

As can be seen from the Wimbledon odds, the Swiss is going into this match as a comparatively clear underdog. Betting odds of up to 3.15 are currently available for a Wawrinka vs. Monfils bet on the 39-year-old – and rightly so?

Like Stanislas Wawrinka, Gaël Monfils has also made a successful start to Wimbledon 2024. Monfils beat his compatriot Mannarino 3:1 in four sets, winning 81% of his points on his first serve

If both players take the momentum with them, a close second-round duel is a distinct possibility. Our Wawrinka vs. Monfils prediction does not rule out a surprise from the supposed underdog from Switzerland. Betano is currently offering a special bonus promotion for new customers.

Stan Wawrinka – Statistics & current form

Stanislas Wawrinka is winding down his career. There is still no retirement in sight, but instead the former ATP number three – for the last time at the beginning of 2014 – is annoying the up-and-coming competition. In Wimbledon, a reckless Charles Broom was punished in three sets. The wild card entrant had no chance against the “oldie” Wawrinka.

With a rate of 77% points won on first serve and a total of eleven aces, the Swiss ensured a clear balance of power. However, Wawrinka was also broken twice in the three sets. In return, the world number 95 of the ATP managed five breaks, which meant that the result of 6:3, 7:5 and 6:4 was fully deserved.

If Wawrinka continues his confident performance, he has a realistic chance of winning in the second round. The Wawrinka vs Monfils Wimbledon betting odds should not be overestimated. Bets on the Swiss have value – especially at the high prices

First serve against Gaël Monfils points the way ahead

If Wawrinka wins the match against the French “entertainer”, it will be only the second time he has reached the third round of the grass court classic since 2015. Since then, the Swiss has flown under the radar at Wimbledon and has not recorded any notable successes. It is therefore at least partly understandable why Wawrinka is classified as the clear underdog.

He has won two of the last four Head-2-Heads. However, Stanislas Wawrinka has lost the last two tennis duels against Gaël Monfils, including the Diriyah Tennis Cup 2019 in Saudi Arabia. On that occasion, the Swiss lost 2-0 and was broken five times by his French opponent.

This time, Wawrinka can be expected to win at least one set. The match against Monfils will be decided in a best-of-five anyway

Gaël Monfils – statistics & current form

Gaël Monfils came through the first round at Wimbledon unscathed. The 37-year-old came through against his compatriot Adrian Mannarino with a four-set victory. Although Monfils had to concede a set in the meantime, his entry into the second round of the grass court classic was never really in danger.

Monfils won 81% of his points on his first serve over the course of four sets. There were even 16 aces for the ATP world no. 33. Of the three break points that Monfils nonetheless allowed, two were converted by his opponent – both in the second set, mind you.

Mannarino did not have another chance to break in the following two sets. The French tennis pro had already made a positive impression at the grass court tournament in Mallorca and only just missed out on a place in the final. The performance against Mannarino was therefore not a snapshot

Represented at Wimbledon for the first time since 2021

For Gaël Monfils, taking part in this year’s grass court classic is a real highlight. The Frenchman has not played on the hallowed turf in London since 2021. The anticipation for this year’s tournament was all the greater – not only for Monfils, but also for the tennis fans in London.

In his long career, his best result at Wimbledon to date was reaching the fourth round. That milestone came at the 2018 competition, where Monfils was only eliminated from the competition against Kevin Anderson – after four exhausting sets with a total of three tiebreaks.

It remains difficult to predict how far this year’s adventure will go, as a top match against a player like Dimitrov looms in the third round. Before that, Monfils must also underline his role as favorite against Stan Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka – Gaël Monfils head-to-head comparison / H2H result

The two players meet for the eighth time. Gaël Monfils leads the direct comparison against Stanislas Wawrinka with a record of 4-3. Two of these four victories came in the last two tennis duels – both in 2019. Monfils beat Wawrinka 2-1 in Rotterdam. Ten months later, there was a 2-0 win in the Saudi tournament.

The two players will now meet on grass for the first time ever. Wawrinka leads the head-2-head at Grand Slams with a 2-0 record against Monfils – a good omen?

Stan Wawrinka – Gaël Monfils betting tip

Although Stan Wawrinka’s role as underdog is understandable, the Swiss should not be underestimated even at an advanced tennis age. The three-time Grand Slam champion has a realistic chance of reaching the third round at Wimbledon, even if he has to overcome the difficult hurdle against Monfils.

Both players celebrated a successful start to the tournament at the grass court classic and impressed with a commanding service percentage. If they can build on this, close sets in the direct second round duel are a distinct possibility. It is therefore also worth betting on at least one tie-break between the two “oldies”

We think Wawrinka can win a set at the start of the match and see value in the high prices. Our Wawrinka vs. Monfils betting tip targets Wawrinka as the winner of the first set at odds of 2.57. We use five units for this. The best odds are offered by Betano
