After his victory over Musetti in Paris, the Piedmontese player wins 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 and returns to the top eight of the Moselle Open
Lorenzo Sonego wins the derby against Flavio Cobolli in the round of 16 of the ATP 250 in Metz, coming back from behind to win 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in two hours and seven minutes of play. This is the second consecutive derby won by the Turin tennis player, after his surprise victory against Lorenzo Musetti in the second round of the Masters 1000 in Paris. For the fourth time this season, he reaches the quarterfinals in a tournament and returns to the top eight in Metz after two years: here he will face the winner between Hugo Gaston and Daniel Altmaier.
The level of tennis between Cobolli and Sonego is high: on the indoor hard courts of the Moselle Open, every rally and every point is fought for. The difference in the first set is mainly Flavio’s solidity. The two break points conceded by Lorenzo easily translate into a double break in favor of the Roman tennis player. Cobolli, on the other hand, cancels out all five opportunities offered and, with 81% of first serves, closes the first set. However, the situation is reversed within a few minutes. At 2-1 in the second set, Sonego breaks serve for the first time, allowing him to take the match to a third set. The world number 22 fails to create opportunities on his return, while his serve drops off and he concedes three break points in two consecutive service games. At 6-5 to Sonego, Cobolli concedes defeat: it is Lorenzo who reaches the quarterfinals in France.
